It shouldn’t be so difficult to figure out the pronunciation of this name, but lately I’ve noticed there’s more than 1. Which sounds better in your opinion, or is more correct?
-
ee-van-juh-leen
-
ee-van-juh-lynn
-
ev-ann-juh-Lynn? (Strong EE sound at front or not?)
Help me out y’all!
I pronounce it with the [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] ending…probably most similar to your third pronunciation. I say uh more than ee at the beginning if that makes sense. (Uh/eh-van-juh-lynn)
I like leen is more common.

This is definitely a name with a lot of possible pronunciations! I have a [name_f]British[/name_f] friend with a daughter named [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] who pronounces it the [name_u]French[/name_u] way, Eh-VON-ja-leen. I gave her a shock by congratulating her on the birth of Ev-ANN-jeh-line when we first spoke after baby’s birth, lol. I’ve noticed from previous Nameberry discussions that most people pronounce the last syllable as “leen” however. I’d imagine the most common American pronunciation would be Ev-ANN-ja-leen. I haven’t heard the last syllable pronounced as “lynn” or the first as “ee” instead of “ev.” But those all seem plausible too.

I used to pronounce this name ee-van-jeh-LEEN and I find that pronunciation to be my favorite, honestly. [name_m]Just[/name_m] super elegant. However, I also live in [name_f]Louisiana[/name_f] where we have an [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_m]Parish[/name_m] (equivalent of a county) and it’s commonly called eh-VAN-jeh-lynn, so I find myself sometimes sliding into that pronunciation as well.

I’d say it most like number one - definitely with the -leen ending.

I adore Evangeline!! I would use it for my own little girl - it’s gorgeous!

I pronounce it the first way with the ‘LEEN’ ending and I personally have never heard it any other way. I wouldn’t worry about pronounciation - it’s easily correctable in this case!

I pronounce like no 1. However I think both 1 and 2 pronunciations are really nice in equal measure. 3. Doesn’t seem as intuitive for me.

[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] has been one of my favorites as of late!
I alternate between pronouncing it with an “ee” or an “eh” first syllable, but always with the “leen” ending.

I pronounce it like #1 however I feel like I get lazy and the ‘ee’ sound at the beginning sometimes morphs into more of an ‘eh/ih’ sound . Making it sound more like ‘ih-VAN-juh-leen’

I pronounce it as ee-van-juh-leen and that’s what I hear the most, and I’m from the US

I always say something like uh-VAN-juh-leen. Phonetically, /əˈvænd͡ʒəlin/
Don’t think the way I pronounce it is on your list: eh-van-jeh-LEEN.

I think I say it eh-van-juh-lynn

Actually my instinct would be to pronounce Ev-ann-juh-line, like the sound at the end of [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]!

#1 but sometimes if I’m talking fast the first sound is more of an “uh” than an “ee.” Its always a “leen” ending for me though.

I know an ev-ann-juh-leen (no strong EE sound at the front) and I think that would be my default pronunciation as well as my favorite
