Eveline? Too Evil-eye?

I recently came across [name_f]Eveline[/name_f] as an alternative to [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], etc. (I pronounce [name_f]Eveline[/name_f] EE-vuh-line.) I love [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] but it’s getting so popular, and I prefer the -line ending to the -lyn ending. But when I suggested it to my boyfriend, he said that it sounds like “evil” or “evil eye.” Does anyone else think this is an issue? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you pronounce [name_f]Eveline[/name_f] EE-vuh-line or EH-vuh-line? I’d love suggestions for any other names that have the long E sound at the beginning or a -line ending. Thanks!

I would pronounce [name_f]Eveline[/name_f] the same way you do, but I wouldn’t automatically hear ‘evil’ in it… could the NN [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Eva[/name_f] or [name_f]Evie[/name_f] sway your boyfriend?

You may also like [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] (though I pronounce it as -leen)

I would pronounce it the same as [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u].

Looking at it makes me see it as you do, as EEEveline, which is alright, but I do see where it can cause questions. I prefer the [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] pronunciation, though pronouncing it as Ee-vuh-line instead of Ee-vuh-leen can make it better. As for other names that start with ‘Ee’ [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] is a great choice as well! I included a few others just so you can look  [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps!

[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Angeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Appoline[/name_f]
[name_f]Aveline[/name_f]
[name_f]Celine[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Isaline[/name_f]
[name_f]Magdaleine[/name_f]

I pronounce it the same with [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]. And no, I never ever make the connection to evil eye.

I would pronounce it EH-vuh-leen, like [name_f]Evelina[/name_f] without the A.

EE-vuh-line does sound quite close to “evil eye” or “evil line” though.

I’ve actually always used the [name_m]French[/name_m] pn for [name_f]Eveline[/name_f] - EE-veh-leen, so it took me a while to figure out how one could hear “evil eye” in it. My second guess at pronunciation would be like [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] though, so I think you’re fine.
