Evelyn Pronunciation Problems

I have always loved the names [name_f]Evie[/name_f] and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] for a girl and in my head I have always pronounced it “Ehv-uh-lyn”. I’m less keen on the “Eve-lyn” pronunciation as I heard it used as the name of a male character so to me it seems more masculine?

I am worried if I ever used this name my child would constantly have to correct whoever on how to pronounce her name. I live in the UK and I’m not sure which is more common.

If you saw the name [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] written, how would you pronounce it?

Thanks

I pronounce [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] “Ehv-uh-lyn.” I haven’t heard of “[name_f]Eve[/name_f]-uh-lyn” before.

I also say EV-uh-lin (US). I have only heard [name_f]EVE[/name_f]-lin for [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] Waugh (male).

Ev-uh-lin. That is the only way I have ever heard it! I am in the US, though.

Always Ehv-uh-lyn to me too.

I live in the UK and say Eh-vuh-lynn, and I’ve never thought that would cause an issue. I think the only time I have heard [name_f]Eve[/name_f]-lynn is on a male character too, and on Downton [name_u]Abbey[/name_u] too, so not a current representation either. I think even with nn [name_f]Evie[/name_f] (EE-vee) it wouldn’t be a problem.

Also living in the UK and I pronounce it as ehv-uh-lyn.

I live in the UK, in the past I would have said [name_f]Eve[/name_f]-lyn (which I also happen to prefer) but I think in general the pronunciation Ehv-uh-lyn is far more common, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

Thanks everyone that was really helpful
