ever feel protective of a name?

I’m protective over [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] and [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]. Any time I hear [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], I get really excited, but when anyone else in my circle says that they love the name [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], I get defensive. I tell people, “That’s my grandmother’s name. I want to use it when I have kids.” Because I don’t want anyone else in my family to use it. It isn’t like anyone else in my family has ties to the name [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] like I do, since it is my grandmother’s name and she’s not related to that side of the family. So any time my cousin says she loves the name, I get defensive about it.
[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] I get angry when anyone wants to use it for a girl. One of my first characters was named [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] (a boy), so I equate the name with boys. I get really angry when I see it on a girl. It just screams boy to me.

Yes, I definitely do! Some of my favorite unisex names on guys ([name_u]Avery[/name_u], [name_u]Bailey[/name_u], [name_u]Addison[/name_u], [name_u]Harper[/name_u]!), for example, and some of my outlandish favorites (like [name_f]Eleni[/name_f] and Madelief!), but especially, especially my beloved [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]. She’s been my favorite girls’ name for eons and I know she’s popular, but everyone always seems to have a reason not to use it, and if anything, I think she should be used more! It makes me so sad that people discount her just because of [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]'s popularity.

I don’t mind if girls get unisex names, but I more get touchy when people try to tell me I can’t use a family name like [name_u]Avery[/name_u], or a unisex name that still feels pretty gender-equal like [name_u]Finley[/name_u], just because they’re quite popular for girls. :frowning:

[name_f]My[/name_f] sister’s name is [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f] and I think if I have a daughter I’d want to give her that as a middle name, because my sister and I are close. But people spell it all kinds of ways ([name_f]Katelyn[/name_f], [name_f]Kaitlin[/name_f], [name_f]Catelyn[/name_f], [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f], [name_f]Caitlyn[/name_f]…) and that bugs me to no end. At least it wouldn’t be so annoying if it were your middle name, but [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f] is actually the traditional spelling of the name and almost no one gets it right the first time. It’s most frequently spelled [name_f]Katelyn[/name_f].

Also, I can’t say that I’m protective of it per se, but I dislike seeing [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] spelled any other way - especially [name_f]Makayla[/name_f] and [name_f]Mikayla[/name_f].

I love the name [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] and it’s even my husband’s aunt’s name, but everyone I told about it dislikes it. So now I keep my mouth shut wrt names I like, until it’s time.
