Everett ... going to the girls?

One of my long time top boys name is [name]Everett[/name] nn [name]Rhett[/name], it was my great grandfathers name. Upon nameberry searching it I read under the “girl” tab that it is a “prime” crosssover candidate for a girls name! Eek. Name freak that I am, my stomach dropped. This name is very masculine to me, I never would have thought girl … but a few years ago I would have said the same about [name]Eliot[/name], [name]Addison[/name], and [name]Ryan[/name].

What do you think, berries? [name]Will[/name] [name]Everett[/name] convert?

Oh no…I really hope it doesn’t. To me it’s much more masculine than [name]Eliot[/name] (which I think has a softer sound), but [name]Addison[/name] and [name]Ryan[/name] have always seemed very masculine to me as well. Now that I think about it, I can (unfortunately) see parents choosing [name]Everett[/name] for their girls to get to the nickname [name]Eve[/name] or [name]Evie[/name] - which makes my stomach drop too - but I don’t think anyone’s attempted that yet. I really hope it doesn’t happen, and I don’t think it will for a while.

God, what male name isn’t going to girls anymore? Eventually only women will have names, and men will have to go by the last four digits of their social security number.

I don’t think it’ll go totally to the girls, but I do agree with [name]Jay[/name] that a rare few might use it to get to [name]Eve[/name], [name]Evie[/name], or [name]Ever[/name].

When I was last pregnant, I suggested [name]Everett[/name] for a daughter. [name]Everett[/name] is a family name from 100 years ago and it would fit with great-great-grandma’s family name theme of all the girl’s names started with E. Everyone I know cringed and said" WHHHHAAAATTTT?" No one I know was ready for [name]Everett[/name] to be a girls name. However, I do live in Kansas. It takes at least 2 years for any trend to “make it” to Kansas. I think it will be several years before any significant amount of female Everetts start popping up. And it will be at least a decade before anyone associates it with girls at first hear or sight.

Oh God NO, the thought makes me cringe. [name]Everett[/name] nn [name]Rhett[/name] is one of my favorites also, a big contender on my list of boy names.

[name]Everette[/name]. The horror. While it sounds very masculine to me and I would love to think that ths is the case for everyone, I have no doubt that some people would consider it for a girl. But it is totally one of my favorite boys names.

No, no, no! [name]Ah[/name], I just had to respond to this! No, I could never imagine [name]Everett[/name] on a girl, and I really don’t want to. The name is underused enough as a boy name! Ugh. [name]Everett[/name] has such a crisp, clean, masculine feel to it that is fresh, original, fun, yet still somewhat classic. I would really encourage you to use it for a boy - that would be great!

[name]Lemon[/name]

PS I went to school with an [name]Everett[/name], so that’s my one and only life experience with the name. But, I’m not sure if you’ve ever watched ‘O Brother, Where [name]Art[/name] Thou?’ - you should! - [name]George[/name] [name]Clooney[/name]'s character is [name]Ulysses[/name] [name]Everett[/name] McGill, so I always think of that now, too! And, face it, [name]Clooney[/name]'s pretty darn masculine, right?

I really hope not. I love the name [name]Everett[/name]. It’s one of my top male names that I’d actually consider using for a son. I hate the fact that so many male names are being converted to female names, and then they become unusable for boys anymore! :frowning:

Like a previous poster said, every male name is going to the girls nowadays. I don’t like it at all, as I favor softer names for boys and those are the ones that become most popular for girls. Another name I was pretty horrified to see listed on Nameberry as unisex is [name]Arthur[/name]. What insane parents are naming their daughters [name]Arthur[/name]?

NO!
I’ve never heard of a girl named [name]Everett[/name]- it’s always sounded masculine to me. It’s definitely usable as a boy’s name, and nobody would assume that someone named [name]Everett[/name] was a girl. A girl with the name [name]Everett[/name] would probably get mail addressed to Mr. [name]Everett[/name].

[name]Francis[/name] and [name]Lesley[/name] are also traditionally boy’s names. My maiden name is [name]Everett[/name] and I’m also the last of my genealogy. I’ve always been very proud to have such a strong name. My husband is a [name]Jr[/name]. So, we have decided that if it is a boy to carry on my husband’s name in honor of his father and if it is a girl to name her [name]Everett[/name] to carry on my lineage, which is very special to me. In the South, it is a tradition to give girls the maiden name of the mother as either a first or middle name. Double names are also a tradition. I much prefer my girl having a traditional boy’s name so she is not discriminated against based on the name on her resume. She will be more likely to be called in for an interview, etc. when it is time for her to make her own way in this world. AND it also means a lot to me and my family.

Why the heck does [name]EVERY[/name] male name seem to be OK for girls these days? No. [name]Everett[/name] is not for girls any more than [name]Ryan[/name], [name]Elliot[/name], [name]Addison[/name], or any other perfectly good male name that people saddle little girls with is.

Certain names get listed under girls names too because there are a few crazy people out there who think it’s cute on their little girl (sorry if that offends anyone, but this is a trend I don’t understand in the slightest). I’m so sick of my favorite names being used on girls. I’m not afraid to use my favorite names just because of a few random girls with the name (one of my favorite actresses has one of my favorite boy names!) but I don’t want them to go the way of [name]Riley[/name] - not only popular for girls now too, but trendy with the misspellings and everything.

But that’s the other thing - people need to stop being afraid to use a boy’s name on a boy the second they hear it on a girl. I know a girl named [name]Kevyn[/name] - I’d say [name]Kevin[/name] is a pretty masculine name. So what if there’s one girl with the name? I’d use it anyways. That’s the only way to stop it from “going to the girls”.

No, no, no, NO!
I hope it doesn’t. I love [name]Everett[/name]. For me it’s a family name (great great grandpa) and I intend on using it on a future son as a middle name. But hey…if enough people keep using it on boys, maybe it won’t go to the girls.

i knwo two young boys named everett and i never would have thought girl. but now that you brought it up i guess i could see it with the evie nn or somehting. but honestly i feel like its just getting popular with the boys so i dont see that happening for awhile even if it does. and honestly elliott and ryan are still boys names to me - as are drew and dylan. i knwo girls with these names but they havnt crossed over for me in the sense that they are still boys names in my eyes that a couple girsl have used

[name]Everett[/name] is one of my favorite names, and I’m not scared of boy names for girls, but I just don’t see [name]Everett[/name] as a girl’s name. I think it’s a GREAT boy name.

Eww! I really dislike the name [name]Arthur[/name] to begin with, I can’t imagine naming a girl that!

[name]Just[/name] 'cause a name shortens to a feminine nickname does NOT make it a girls name. However, I would not be the least bit surprised to see the girls snatch up [name]Everett[/name] like they have with [name]Avery[/name], [name]Addison[/name], etc. Disappointed, yes, but not surprised.
And [name]ITA[/name] with PP about [name]Arthur[/name] on a girl. :? I don’t get why you’d look at a tiny baby girl and think, ‘Hmm, I think we should call her [name]Arthur[/name]. Yes, she’s definitely an [name]Arthur[/name]!’ [name]Just[/name]…no. :expressionless:

[name]Everett[/name] sounds quite feminine to me, to be honest. It works for a boy or girl or whatever.

Hey, even [name]Evelyn[/name] used to be a boy name.
