Everyone hates Matilda! Now need help renaming!

Okay, everyone has an opinion and I’m starting to tell my hubby we aren’t going to tell anyone the future name of our girl…

We have a boy named [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Kyle[/name] (My hubby only agreed to [name]Sawyer[/name] because of the [name]Rush[/name] song and [name]Kyle[/name] because of Terminator) and a girl named [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Marion[/name] (We both liked [name]Charlotte[/name] and my husband’s grandparents on both sides are [name]Marion[/name]) so we discussed names for baby three and both liked [name]Matilda[/name] if it was a girl and I’m sooo in love with the name [name]Matilda[/name].

And once we found out it’s a girl and told his parents, they said they hated the name and now my husband doesn’t like it. And he was just told by the 4th person in his family how horrible [name]Matilda[/name] is.

As much as I don’t care, he does. Sooo anyone have suggestions? Nothing in the top 20 at least, something pretty, spunky, but still old fashioned. Can’t find anything that we both like… HELP! (If the name appears in a rock song or some dude flick, he would be more likely to go for it…

I say use [name]Matilda[/name] anyway! Some family member will always find something to criticize!

[name]Just[/name] say " Well I guess we can start back at square one, but we better invite over all of the people whose approval you need so we can figure it out"…so maybe he will get the point!

[name]Madeleine[/name], [name]Madalyn[/name], [name]Tilda[/name], [name]Tessa[/name] or [name]Adelaide[/name] might be ‘safer’ choices similar to [name]Matilda[/name].

[name]Matilda[/name] is sweet!

Haha, I so agree!

If it’s up to me, I say we are sticking with it but I need my husband on board too. I like [name]Tessa[/name]…

Yeah… We have opinionated family members, too. We don’t spill the beans on any names until after the baby is born and paperwork filed. That way, they have no say in the matter and have to live with our choice! Haha.

So sorry to hear about the reaction to [name]Matilda[/name]-- I do think it’s a sweet name and would fit well with your sibset. Here are some other possibilities (and I could think of songs, groups, etc. for all of them):

[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Amanda[/name]
[name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Angelina[/name]
[name]Annabelle[/name]
[name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Clementine[/name]
[name]Delilah[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name]
[name]Elise[/name]
[name]Helena[/name]
[name]Ingrid[/name]
[name]Irene[/name]
[name]Jane[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Laura[/name]
[name]Lorelei[/name]
[name]Lucretia[/name]
[name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Marianne[/name]
[name]Martha[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Jane[/name]
[name]Nancy[/name]
Rosalita (maybe [name]Rose[/name], [name]Rosie[/name], [name]Rosalie[/name])
[name]Rosemary[/name]
[name]Roxanne[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Samantha[/name]
[name]Stella[/name]
[name]Susannah[/name] nn [name]Susie[/name]
[name]Vera[/name]
[name]Veronica[/name]
[name]Yoko[/name] (kidding!)

Oh, [name]Don[/name]'t let family talk you out of a name you love! I let my mom make comments all the time about [name]Maxwell[/name] reminding her of coffee and asking if his middle name would be “Smart” (hardy har, mom). It got annoying, so I changed it and now, my son is 3 years old and I do not like his name.

I agree that [name]Madeleine[/name] and [name]Adelaide[/name] would be great alternatives, though. Maybe [name]Violet[/name] (seems to have the strong T sound), [name]Juliet[/name] (same here) and [name]Estella[/name] / [name]Stella[/name]?

I’m sorry that they don’t like your name, but I have to admit I agree with them. I think [name]Matilda[/name] is just awful. That said, if there’s a way to get your husband on-board, I say that it’s your (and your husband’s) child and the rest of the family shouldn’t really have a say. But in case your husband won’t change his mind, here are some other suggestions:

[name]Scarlett[/name]
[name]Gemma[/name] ([name]Emma[/name] doesn’t fit your not-in-top-20 criteria, but I think [name]Gemma[/name] is just as pretty and is uncommon in the U.S.)
[name]Katerina[/name] (same reasoning as [name]Gemma[/name] – [name]Katherine[/name] is too popular, but [name]Katerina[/name] isn’t)
[name]Michaela[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Regan[/name] (Shakespearan when pronounced [name]REE[/name]-gan)
[name]Miranda[/name]
[name]Eden[/name]
[name]Kaitlin[/name]/[name]Katelyn[/name]/[name]Caitlin[/name]
[name]Celeste[/name]
[name]Elena[/name]
[name]Emilia[/name] (pronounced like [name]Amelia[/name], but a bit different with the spelling)
[name]Julianna[/name]
[name]Alexandra[/name] or [name]Alessandra[/name]
[name]Rita[/name]

I love your kids’ names, and I love [name]Matilda[/name] – your rock song comment is prompting me to suggest [name]Cordelia[/name] – the Tragically Hip have an awesome song that uses it, I believe it’s actually the title. (Same letter as [name]Charlotte[/name] but different starting sound of course.)
You’ve received a lot of great suggestions, good luck!

That’s ridiculous, what’s to hate about [name]Matilda[/name]? That’s one of the most adorable names out there!

[name]Matilda[/name] is so cute, you have to talk hubby back into it!

You guys are cracking me up but I’m digging some of your suggestions. [name]Lucy[/name] is another favorite but a friend of a friend named her girl that. Always loved that one!

[name]Just[/name] saying, I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Matilda[/name]. I always get mixed reactions to the name though.

I guess if your husband dislikes it though, you’d have to give it up. Too bad…it’s sweet, spunky, vintage and comes with great nickname potential ([name]Mattie[/name], [name]Tilly[/name], [name]Tilda[/name]…).

Some other M names I like are: [name]Meredith[/name], [name]Maggie[/name], [name]Molly[/name], [name]Maisie[/name], [name]Maris[/name], [name]Maren[/name], [name]Madeleine[/name], [name]Mara[/name]…

Some other spunky, vintage classics: [name]Cecelia[/name] ([name]Cece[/name]!), [name]June[/name], [name]Stella[/name], [name]Willa[/name], [name]Lillian[/name], [name]Gloria[/name]…

Some other names you might like: [name]Camille[/name], [name]Tessa[/name], [name]Mara[/name], [name]Cora[/name], [name]Audrey[/name], [name]Aubrey[/name], [name]Claire[/name], [name]Amelia[/name], [name]Bethany[/name]/[name]Elisabeth[/name] (nn [name]Beth[/name]), [name]Iris[/name], [name]Jane[/name], [name]Julia[/name], [name]Lily[/name], [name]Lola[/name]…

She’ll be your daughter…name her what YOU love! When they had children, the got to choose what they wanted; so, now it’s your turn, and YOU get to choose.

That being said, it’s extremely difficult to stand firm when faced with so much opposition. If you want to consuder something else, what about:

Rosalynn
[name]Adele[/name]
[name]Idabelle[/name]
[name]Adelaide[/name]
[name]Georgiana[/name]
[name]Milly[/name]
[name]Molly[/name]
[name]Madeline[/name]
[name]Imogen[/name]
[name]Iris[/name]
[name]Dolly[/name]
[name]Lilah[/name]
[name]Dahlia[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name]

I hope it all works out for you. I seriously think if you love [name]Matilda[/name], you should use it! GL to you!

Hugs, we learned the hard way telling [name]Sebastian[/name]'s name around 20 weeks to everyone. After that, I swore not to tell anyone irl the names we were even considering since I come from a family of “mainstream/common” namers.

I say use [name]Matilda[/name] if you like it, what will everyone say when they meet the baby, that they hate her and her name? I doubt it. She is going to be beautiful and they will love her and love her name…all the people who made fun of [name]Sebastian[/name]'s name love him so much and his name is part of him and so they now have learned to like it even if its not what they would have fit. (My mother in law thought I should name him [name]Matthew[/name], my own mom, [name]Jacob[/name]…)

[name]Hope[/name] I don’t offend anyone, but since you asked, I’ll tell you why I hate it. It sounds harsh and unflattering to me. I imagine a witch from a Brothers Grim folk tale when I hear this name.

I love [name]Matilda[/name] too! Too bad Hubs has changed his mind, once you stop liking a name it would be hard to start to [name]LOVE[/name] love it again :frowning:
I feel your pain, nobody in my family liked [name]Ramona[/name] when my mom (who had been sworn to secrecy) spilled the beans to everyone. They were tactful about it but I got bombarded with “have you thought about…___”. Now though everyone LOVES [name]Ramona[/name]'s name and the most outspoken detractors my mom and aunt both told me (now that she is a spunky verbal active toddler) “I am so glad you didn’t name her anything else!!”

[name]Sawyer[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], and…

[name]Heidi[/name]
[name]Mariam[/name]
[name]Moira[/name]
[name]Kirsty[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]

Of these I like [name]Eliza[/name] and [name]Tabitha[/name] best with your sibset: [name]Sawyer[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name] and [name]Eliza[/name] or [name]Sawyer[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], and [name]Tabitha[/name]

[name]Ruby[/name] is spunky and old fashioned.
Rank is 109
Appears in half a dozen rock songs. (Not only [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Tuesday[/name] by the Rolling Stones … )

I agree with this; but for me, it’s also the sound of the ‘tilda’ part. Very unattractive in my ears.

But, my opinions as well as everyone else’s shouldn’t matter when it comes to picking a name for your child. If you love [name]Matilda[/name], go for it!

I hope you can win him back on [name]Matilda[/name] too but if not, are you sure [name]Lucy[/name] is out? [name]How[/name] often do you see this friend? It’s a popular enough name, it’s not like copying a rarer name. Or what about [name]Lucinda[/name] nn [name]Lucy[/name] to keep it distinct when they’re together (and also [name]Lucinda[/name] kind of feels like [name]Matilda[/name] to me).

[name]Mary[/name] is in a million rock songs and is sweet and vintage and starts similarly to [name]Matilda[/name]. I actually like the combo [name]Mary[/name] [name]Matilda[/name] - alliteration that works.
