So my SO, who refuses to discuss anything baby related - including names, decided to veto any [name_f]Etta[/name_f] names.
I didn’t realize that ETA (eh-TA) was a Basque guerrilla freedom fighting group. And well that’s all he thinks about when he hears [name_f]Etta[/name_f].
So my lovely [name_f]Loretta[/name_f] has fallen off the list of possibilities.
I have been considering adding [name_f]Esme[/name_f] or [name_f]Mariposa[/name_f] ([name_f]Posey[/name_f]) instead. But I’m not loving either as much as I would want to so I’d love some suggestions.
My basic naming rules are: The name needs to sound fairly similar in [name_m]German[/name_m], English and Spanish and needs to sound good in all three languages. Otherwise, I’m pretty much up for considering anything.
Standard Disclaimer: Not pregnant or TTC (and won’t be discussing those options with SO till after we get married). Would love any suggestions though.
Oh, sweetie! You posted in the middle of the night and I didn’t see it! Right now I’m about to have dinner and there’s trick-or-treater’s at my door every five seconds, I’ve got a star on my arm and guests in the sitting room (I’m just having a three-minute break here!), but I’ll be back later with some suggestions for you, my lovely.
[name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_f]Esme[/name_f]. I prefer [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] to [name_f]Mariposa[/name_f], but of course that doesn’t give you [name_f]Posey[/name_f].
[name_m]How[/name_m] about: [name_f]Este[/name_f], [name_f]Mira[/name_f], [name_f]Mila[/name_f], [name_f]Elora[/name_f], [name_f]Fiora[/name_f], [name_f]Leda[/name_f], [name_f]Lena[/name_f], [name_f]Mara[/name_f], [name_f]Oriana[/name_f], [name_f]Noemi[/name_f], [name_f]Viola[/name_f], [name_f]Zora[/name_f], [name_u]Zola[/name_u]?
Awe - Thanks Otter dear. And yeah, apparently I can’t go to sleep till around 4:30am anymore and after 1am I refuse to do actual work so that gives me some desperately needed NB time. (Torn between hating the 4 hours max sleep and it and loving my berry fix). I’m looking forward to your always awesome suggestions.
[name_f]Alexa[/name_f] - I love that you suggested one of my favorites [name_f]Merida[/name_f]. [name_f]Love[/name_f], love, love this name and luckily SO likes it too. So she will be around for a while.
I also like your suggestions of [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] and [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]. [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] is too close to my current top name [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] to even make it to consideration. The only thing I’d worry about with [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] is how most english speakers would pronounce it. I adore Eh-sol-duh but I-sold or Is-old are both kind of awful, don’t you think? Am I over worrying about this?
Emsky - [name_f]Viola[/name_f] has been a long time love of mine. Right on!!! I like [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] but I don’t [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] and I do love [name_f]Posey[/name_f] which is why I was considering [name_f]Mariposa[/name_f]. I don’t know if I need another [name_f]Posey[/name_f] option (I do have [name_u]Penrose[/name_u]) but I’d love some thoughts if you have any (outside of [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]). [name_f]Elora[/name_f] and [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] are both a great suggestion. Is it weird to have [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] and also consider [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] since they have the same meaning?
I don’t think so, it’s only a list. I don’t have an actual list–well, that’s not true, I have many–but not a single list that I’m forever fine-tuning. If I did I would probably be obsessed with eliminating overlaps.
We have very similar tastes! My youngest daughter is named [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f], which I saw on your list! So I would suggest my eldest daughters name, [name_f]Veronica[/name_f]! I think that might fit the bill!
emsky: Well that makes me feel better. And yes, I do actually also have a number of lists. Including a “NB” list of names that I liked off of NB and should probably reconsider should another name be eliminated. [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] definitely just made that list. (So she might be back once the SO veto’s Endora -> which I expect to happen as soon as he takes a closer look at this list. Not a huge Bewitched fan I fear).
Otter: “When pregnant become Hermit.” Got it. <wink>. We had our neighbors over for dinner tonight as well and I almost kicked them out at 10:30 because I’m just tired, I can’t imagine how you feel. I really like [name_f]Corinna[/name_f] (though it’s the name of a family friend), [name_f]Honoria[/name_f], Isolina, [name_f]Maxima[/name_f] (though we have two Maximillians who are currently 3 in the family) and [name_f]Octavia[/name_f]…oh and [name_f]Perdita[/name_f] (so cute)… I think I need to forgo [name_f]Miranda[/name_f] besides the beautiful [name_f]Tempest[/name_f] reference I don’t really love her on the [name_f]Miranda[/name_f]'s I’ve meet. [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] and [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] might be pushing my twitchy-witches ([name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] and Endora) over the tv-show witch edge. (Though I do like [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]) and [name_f]Paloma[/name_f] is firmly on my Spanish mn list. Thanks. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]Hortensia[/name_f] as well or just [name_f]Ortensia[/name_f]? I don’t know I’m sort of feeling the “old lady”-flower names like [name_f]Hortensia[/name_f] and [name_f]Petunia[/name_f] lately. I know SO would veto them in a heart beat though. They might have to make for good mn options in the future.
aftrev: I have considered [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] in the past. She doesn’t make my list because SO’s mothers name was [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] (which I dislike, though I do like [name_m]Victor[/name_m]). I fear that if we ever use a V girls name it would have to be that - he’s a total momma’s boy. [name_f]Viola[/name_f] hasn’t come off the list yet because her favorite color was [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and it’s almost close enough - maybe. What other names did you consider while naming your girls?
ashley: (is it okay to shorten your sn to this or would you prefer something different?) I love [name_f]Josefina[/name_f] but the J-H thing in Spanish kills all J names for me. [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] and [name_f]Solina[/name_f] are all great suggestions. Thanks!
We’re actually name hunting right now again We were insanely lucky with our first two, both names were the first names we brought up. Although we are crazy nickname people, I blame the hubby his name is [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] but is know by [name_u]Jody[/name_u]. [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] goes by Vroni ([name_m]German[/name_m] influence here making it pronounced Fro Knee) and [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabet[/name_f] is [name_u]Rory[/name_u]. Our current debates are [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]- nm Endy, [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]- nm [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f]- nm [name_f]Nessa[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]- nm [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_m]Remington[/name_m]- nm [name_u]Remi[/name_u], Ottolie- nm [name_u]Ollie[/name_u]. Basically we’re floundering on the third! Haha I’m afraid that means its a boy!
[name_u]Lexi[/name_u], the veto of [name_f]Loretta[/name_f] is sad! But I so adore the rest of your list! I love [name_f]Miranda[/name_f] - it is too bad the ones you’ve known have been meh. I definitely second [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f].
Hmmm, what to suggest? I think we have somewhat similar tastes, so how about…
aftrev: I love the idea of [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] for you. Would be so cool for all your girls to have different beginning and ending letters. (Which apparently will never happen for me as I’m a -ia and -a glutton. More reason for my [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] love).
[name_f]Moon[/name_f]: I love [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]! and [name_f]Veruca[/name_f] is awesome. Though I love “[name_u]Charlie[/name_u] and the Chocolate Factory” and “[name_f]Veruca[/name_f], darling!” is my only hang up for this name. [name_m]Will[/name_m] anyone else think about this besides me? Because, well I’d rather not have people think about my child and a spoiled, spoiled brat who wants everything NOW in on breath. (I am totally over thinking this as we aren’t even TTC yet. [name_m]Aren[/name_m]'t I?) And I’ve considered [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] but it’s one of my best friends names and I think unless it’s immediate family I’m avoiding honoring names at the moment. (I think I might not have been clear on [name_f]Miranda[/name_f]. The [name_f]Miranda[/name_f]'s are awesome, the name just never seems to fit right).
From the names suggested so far I think: Isolde, Veruca and Honoria are my favorite. (Elora, Perdita and Eloise are in second place).
Any non -a or -ia ending name suggestions? (I clearly could use some help branching out).
I love [name_f]Oriana[/name_f]. [name_f]Merida[/name_f] is very pretty too.

[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Clarissa[/name_f]
[name_f]Cassandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Liliana[/name_f]
Oh, and I love both [name_f]Hortensia[/name_f] and [name_f]Ortensia[/name_f], I just wasn’t sure about h’s in Spanish. I try to follow Italian pronunciation when I think of Spanish ones for you, that’s why I wrote [name_f]Ortensia[/name_f]!!
lexiem~ I have no problem with just [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] for my sn…ty for asking. So glad you like [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], [name_f]Oriana[/name_f], and [name_f]Solina[/name_f]. I took Spanish in high school and remembered what the sounds of the spanish alphabet make-but wasn’t sure if it always applied to names or not.
Lis09: [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Anabel[/name_f] (well [name_f]Annabel[/name_f]) are both great suggestions thanks. I like [name_f]Tatiana[/name_f] but prefer [name_f]Titania[/name_f]. What do you think?
Otter: WOW, just wow. What an extensive and amazing list. Thank you! I particularly like Casperia, [name_f]Emiliana[/name_f] (I do have [name_m]Emil[/name_m] on a longer boys list), [name_f]Horatia[/name_f] (perfect way to honor my godfather [name_m]Horatio[/name_m]), and [name_f]Helena[/name_f]. Question: I haven’t been able to find the pronunciation for Casperia. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce it? I’d be inclined to say KAHS-pər-ee-ə. [name_m]How[/name_m] about you?
[name_u]Ashley[/name_u]: Well you’ve got more Spanish than I do. I think I lasted two days but my SO is fluent and 4 out of 5 elementary schools in our area are bi-lingual schools. So I guess I will eventually be learning.
