My best friend called me yesterday and she is pregnant! I think I’m more excited than her! The conversation went to names and she has had her boy’s name picked for years but she has no idea with girls. She likes names that are exotic, “magical” sounding and feminine. The example she gave me was Amalthea (it’s from the Last Unicorn) and she said I could definitely start making her a list. So, Berries… I need names that make you think “fairies, unicorns, magic, legends” Her last name is short, one syllable sounds like Vow (as in wedding vow)
I second Rusalka, that was my first thought when I read what she wants. (It’s also a magical owl in a gorgeous czech cinderella movie.)
Gloriana, Canacee, [name]Una[/name], Belphoebe, [name]Amoret[/name] and Florimell (all from The Faerie [name]Queen[/name])
[name]Titania[/name]
[name]Ofelia[/name]
[name]Arethusa[/name]
Rusalka
Ellyllon (never even heard this name before, where is it from?)
Ambrosine
[name]Amoret[/name]
Asceline
Roselaine
[name]Artemisia[/name]
[name]Alaira[/name]
[name]Celestia[/name]
[name]Rosaline[/name]
[name]Rosalie[/name]
[name]Rosalia[/name]
[name]Rosalind[/name]
[name]Persephone[/name]
[name]Dahlia[/name]
[name]Desdemona[/name]
[name]Primrose[/name]
I’ve noticed she likes flower names, and names that start with A and R. I know she just found out so we have lots of time, but it will be fun to talk about these.
The two names that immediately came to mind were [name]Arianwen[/name] and [name]Myfanwy[/name]. [name]Linnea[/name] might fit, plus it’s a flower name.
[name]Ottilie[/name] is correct-- they’re tiny fairies in Welsh folklore.
If her baby is likely to have dark hair, have a look at [name]Maurelle[/name] (or its variants- [name]Mauriel[/name], [name]Maurielle[/name], etc). It means “dark and elvin.”
@blade, actually her baby will most likely be very pale and blond since both parents are, but you never know… could be some wacky gene in there. My husband and I both have very dark hair and eyes (He’s Navajo) and [name]Rowan[/name] ended up with light brown hair and greenish gray eyes.
Amalthea! The Last Unicorn! I had forgotten her name, so thanks for reminding me! I think it would an amazing name choice, and [name]Ama[/name] or [name]Thea[/name] can be nicknames. But I also second the suggestions of Belphoebe and [name]Melusine[/name] (nn Melu).
I believe Maurelle (Maurel) comes from Morel/Morella which is a Nightshade plant, I do know Maurelle is synonymous with the word sunflower both of which makes it sort of woodsy and elvish but I could be wrong, you would need another French speaker or plant enthusiast to tell you for sure but it might be a good choice for a fair skinned baby as well if this is true.
edit: ultimately I think this work is associated with Moors so Blade is right, it probably implies dark but the sunflower association makes me think of nature and light
Last unicorn? I’m thinking about [name]Zeus[/name]’ goat. The one who took care of him when he was only baby and then become the constellation of capricorn. But then it’s Amaltheia.
