We need some help making the final decision for a name for our first son. We wanted something unique, but not too crazy. Something lesser known, but that wouldn’t be confusing or considered a “new” name. Our last name is italian and has 4 syllables. It starts with an M and ends with an O.
We have narrowed it down to [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Jude[/name] or [name]Nicholas[/name] [name]Grant[/name]. We like the uniqueness and sound of [name]Ezra[/name] and the meaning of [name]Jude[/name], but we are not at all religious and we are concerned that this name might be too out there. [name]Nicholas[/name] [name]Grant[/name] is a strong, more traditional name in our eyes, but it does not feel as daring. It almost feels too safe. We are also open to suggestions!
Tough choice. I love [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Jude[/name], but I hear you on using a religious name as a non-religious person (I had to say goodbye to [name]Evangeline[/name] for that reason). [name]Nicholas[/name] is classic, but [name]Grant[/name] isn’t my favorite middle name pairing with it. Overall, I would have to pick [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Jude[/name].
[name]Ezra[/name] [name]Jude[/name] would be the more “unique” choice. [name]Nicholas[/name] is in the top 50 boys names in the US so I wouldn’t define it as “unique”. Many people choose Biblical names without being religious so I don’t think you should worry about it too much. Besides, only name nerds would know the meanings of names.
That’s been the major issue with those particular names. We love the way they sound together, but we don’t want to have to discuss our personal philosophies on religion any time someone assumes we’re religious due to our name choice.
Maybe a less religious, but equally handsome middle name would work better?
I honestly think [name]Nicholas[/name] [name]Grant[/name] sounds super handsome. I do like [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Jude[/name] but I prefer [name]Ezra[/name] as a middle name.
[name]Ezra[/name] is a bit of a more specifically Biblical name then some others, in my mind. Some of the more classic/timeless names that are also Biblical names don’t have as heavy of a Biblical feel to it. However, saying this, I don’t think there is necessarily any reason not to use it, even though you are non-religious, as long as you are fully aware that the religious overtones of the name are there. If you do use [name]Ezra[/name], perhaps a less Biblical MN choice would be best for you (maybe [name]Grant[/name]?).
With [name]Nicholas[/name], since your last name is 4 syllables, a 3 syllable first name is pretty long. It could work, but it will be a 7 syllable FN/LN pairing, which is quite a lot. I think [name]Grant[/name] would make a really great (and pretty uncommon) first name choice, it’s actually my favorite of the four names you mentioned. And a short name like this, paired up with your long last name would work well. [name]How[/name] about [name]Grant[/name] [name]Ezra[/name]? Or [name]Grant[/name] [name]Nicholas[/name]?
I love them both! [name]Nicholas[/name] is quite common (and has been popular for years), but I love [name]Grant[/name] paired with it–[name]Grant[/name] has this really intriguing sense of honor and strength and… I don’t really know how to explain it, haha. [name]Grant[/name] is just intriguing, but still really classic. [name]Grant[/name] is just… honorable. It’s a really cool name, and it brings this intriguing sense to the name. You could spice it up with a more interesting nn, like [name]Nico[/name], [name]Claus[/name], or even [name]Cole[/name]. I do like [name]Ezra[/name] more than [name]Nicholas[/name], but I’m not as fond of the combo–I’m not sure I love [name]Jude[/name] paired with it, for some reason, even though I love [name]Jude[/name], too. I think it’s probably because I usually love [name]Ezra[/name] so much as a MN–I think [name]Nicholas[/name] [name]Ezra[/name] or [name]Grant[/name] [name]Ezra[/name] or even [name]Jude[/name] [name]Ezra[/name] would be lovely.
So I suppose I’m no help, haha. I like [name]Nicholas[/name]'s combo more, but I like [name]Ezra[/name] more in general.
As much as I like [name]Ezra[/name] I must tell you that I work with church kids and whenever we learn the books of the Bible they always think that [name]Ezra[/name] is a girls name. No clue why, but for years now almost every 7-10 year old who hasn’t learned before thinks [name]Ezra[/name] is a woman. I think it’s an awesome name, but it’s just a warning for you from my experience.
I love the flow of [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Jude[/name] and I love the name [name]Grant[/name]! I’m not wild about [name]Nicholas[/name] but it’s a nice name and sounds well with [name]Grant[/name].
I love [name]Ezra[/name] so much more than [name]Nicholas[/name]. I agree that choosing a different middle name would solve the problem. [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Grant[/name]?
I love [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Jude[/name]. Those are 2 of my favorite boy names. I wouldn’t worry about the religious connotation. I know several non-religious families who named their child either [name]Ezra[/name] or [name]Jude[/name]. I think the name is just unique enough to stand out, but still classic sounding.
[name]Nicholas[/name] [name]Grant[/name] is very handsome but next to [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Jude[/name] it almost sounds boring. [name]Ezra[/name] [name]Jude[/name] sounds much cooler.
I really like [name]Nicholas[/name] [name]Grant[/name], so strong and handsome, but [name]Nicholas[/name] [name]Jude[/name] would be wonderful & perhaps more interesting. I find [name]Ezra[/name] more dull than [name]Nicholas[/name] because it seems quite trendy to me, I’d be more surprised to meet a baby [name]Nicholas[/name].
[name]Ezra[/name] [name]Jude[/name] is a great pairing and is more unique. But I also like the sound of [name]Nicholas[/name] [name]Grant[/name]. I think my official vote would be for [name]Ezra[/name]. Nicholai would be more unique than [name]Nicholas[/name].
