Faoiltiarna/Faoiltiarn

Hey guys,

I was just wondering what your opinion is on this name I just found, Faoiltiarna (F) and its male variant, Faoiltiarn. It’s supposedly an ancient Celtic name that means “lord of the wolves”. My fiance loves wolves so I’m always looking for unique wolf-themed names.

It’s pronounced FEEL-tyarn-uh (F) and FEEL-tyarn (M)

I try to anglisize as much as I can for names spelled like these. I was thinking of Filtiarna/Filtiarn. Other spelling suggestions are appreciated.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like either one and why/why not? I’m disappointed as I feel it’s not usable, not as a first anyway.

Spam made this thread get lost…

Any thoughts or opinions?

I’m obviously a big fan of Celtic names, even obscure/difficult ones, however, Faoiltiarna doesn’t have a pleasant sound to me and I don’t think it’s very usable. Faolán/Faolan (M) would be a better alternative.

I gotta vote no. And I’m totally an off the wall name girl.

I love wolves too, my husband is [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] and in the bible the tribe of Benjamins animal is the wolf so in our names picked out we have a nod to wolves too.

You can look up ‘wolf’ in different languages.

That’s a bunch of wolf names too. I hope they website helps!!

Does anyone have a legitimate source for this name? As far as I can tell this name was invented for a fantasy roleplaying game.

It’s legitimate. [name_m]Just[/name_m] Google any common Irish last name with it and you’ll see a lot of Irish people have this first name. I found it while searching for uncommon Irish names. It’s on the behindthename.com. It’s just uncommon.

I definitely wouldn’t use it, especially since I live in the US. A person with that name here would be explaining the spelling and pronunciation for their whole life. Nobody would ever say or spell it right.

Thus, I consider it unusable due to being too hard to spell or say correctly.

I would change the spelling to anglisize it. If you have any ideas, let me know

I have an Irish friend with this name, but she pronounces it Full-cheer-nah. I think it is lovely. I personally do not anglicize Irish names that I like, but I understand the need/want to here in the states. I’ve seen it anglicized as Whiltierna, but that gives it a different sound as [name_m]Will[/name_m]-tier-nah. I assume the same can be done for the masculine version.

For those who think it is made up, it is not. There is an Irish saint with this name, however it is not specified as male or female as the saints gender is reported in different places as either or.

PS - I think you should use it
