I’ve been putting together an extensive genealogy to stave off TTC insanity, and even though 90% of the female ancestors I’ve found so far were named [name_f]Marie[/name_f] (Silly [name_m]French[/name_m] and [name_m]French[/name_m] Canadians), I did find some interesting other names
[name_m]Gaspard[/name_m]
[name_f]Marin[/name_f]
Galeran
[name_m]Aubin[/name_m] (Actually quite a few men named this)
Mathurin
Pantaleon
[name_m]Giles[/name_m]
Sachem
Varanvalle
Fiacre
You have some really cool names on there! My family is [name_m]French[/name_m] as well, and all I know of that side of the family is that there was that my Great Grandmother was named [name_f]Marie[/name_f]. She had a lot of brothers, but I have no idea what their names were (they were killed in World War I and I don’t think she ever talked about them).
I’ll do some digging and get back to this thread. There are sure to be some oddities on the Portuguese side of the family.
While hunting down Mathurin (born in 1568 and his son also Mathurin in 1594) I also found an [name_m]Anselme[/name_m]. I have [name_m]Melchior[/name_m], too (born in 1518)! I can’t get myself to like the name, though. It looks pretty but it just sounds weird.
I have quite a few. I’ll drag out my list once I’m on my laptop. Some of my favorites off the top of my head are [name_m]Harmon[/name_m], [name_m]Hamilton[/name_m], [name_u]Murphy[/name_u], [name_m]Callaway[/name_m]… most of mine are surnames or have a very surnamey feel.
[name_f]Minnie[/name_f] [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] : I wouldn’t use [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], but it’s a cute name.
Pretoria [name_f]May[/name_f]: Also wouldn’t use but it’s unusual and was amongst a bunch of normal names.
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_f]Emma[/name_f]
[name_m]Alec[/name_m] [name_u]Percy[/name_u]
[name_f]Rosa[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
Then there’s the [name_f]Emma[/name_f]'s, [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]'s, [name_f]Florence[/name_f]'s … Lots of [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]'s and [name_f]Florence[/name_f]'s. Lot’s of [name_m]John[/name_m]'s, [name_m]Edward[/name_m]'s, not very many [name_f]Mary[/name_f]'s.
I rather like [name_m]Anselme[/name_m], but I’m not much of a fan of [name_m]Melchior[/name_m] either. My Mathurin was just a couple of decades older than yours - born in 1544 and died in 1608. The family name was Pineau.
