[name_f]Wilmetta[/name_f] is so cute :face_holding_back_tears: the character’s, who’s name is most likely going to be either Wellsley or [name_f]Moxie[/name_f], mother was born in 1311 but the character was born in 2012, going between giving her a modern name or a medieval name

that’s actually not a bad idea, honors both time periods

it really is

[name_f]My[/name_f] 26 y.o. daughter is Wellsley. At that time, you heard [name_f]Ashley[/name_f] all the time or Haley/Hailey or [name_f]Riley[/name_f] on a boy but rarely any other -ley name. While -ley has since become a crazily popular ending, the name Wellsley is Old [name_f]English[/name_f], derived from the terms ‘wella’ and ‘lea’ / ‘ley’ and ripened by derivatives of [name_m]Wells[/name_m], [name_m]Somerset[/name_m].

I did quite a bit or research before selecting it. Many -ley ending names like [name_m]Atley[/name_m], [name_m]Morley[/name_m], [name_f]Marley[/name_f], and [name_f]Hadley[/name_f] and on and on are also very old. They sound new/modern because of the onslaught of inventions alongside them now. Wellsley could give off a modern edge when paired with a name like Alaire, I suppose, but widely known, historical [name_f]Wellesley[/name_f], MA and 1st [name_m]Duke[/name_m] of [name_m]Wellington[/name_m], [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_f]Wellesley[/name_f], as well as those familiar with [name_m]Wells[/name_m] derivatives, lend to the understanding that the name is much older.

I do like the idea of pairing modern and medieval. [name_f]My[/name_f] Wellsley, in which I considered it to be the old name, is paired with the modern variant Michae (a family name and pronounced and reminiscent of McKay, an old Scottish name).

I love them too!

I like more commonly heard names Guinevere, Beatrice, Bridget, Arthur, Ambrose, Alaric, Benedict, and Winifred. I LOVE some of the lesser known, keeping them in my personal top 50. I think they’re perfectly usable alongside Alexandra, Isabelle, Victoria, Henry, William, etc.

On my frequently edited top 50 list, at some point or often, in the past three decades:

Male
Baldwin, Ivar, Lucian, Florian, Evander, Lancelot, Mortimer

Family names Gainer (seen as Gaenor in the medieval period in our records) and Guedron (hard G- gedd-run) quickly morphed into usage as first names way back in my family. Both names went all the way with both my pgs, a boy and a girl. Some days I’m still shocked Grantson b. and Wellsley g. ultimately trumped them.

Female
I’ve went crazy over them for a while, compiling lists and hopping down rabbit holes, to complete my all-for-entertainment top 50, and edit it often :upside_down_face:

Sabina is my favorite girl name of all time. Ysmina, Lined/Eluned, Mawd, Magdelene, Miriel, Honora (usually Honor on my list), Ailith, Melisande, Corisande, Meliora, Caitriona, Eira, Caratene, Margreth, Varina, Isabeau, Laetitia, Margery, Yves

I also like
Everard, Leopold, Edgar, Clement, Isidore, Clovis, Floris, Percival

Evaine, Mabel, Lorraine, Nemue, Elisend, Anchoret, Seraphina, Isolde

Lavinia, Eulalia, and Leutia made it through the walls of time appearing along the limbs till about 1950, traveling through one Scottish/English branch of my family.

I LOVE [name_m]Ivar[/name_m], [name_m]Florian[/name_m], and Gainer,

and Ysmina, [name_f]Eluned[/name_f], [name_f]Magdalene[/name_f], [name_f]Honora[/name_f], [name_f]Meliora[/name_f] , [name_f]Evaine[/name_f], and Elisend are awesome

Thank you! She has loved her name, thankfully, because at the time it felt doubly obscure and you never know if your child will declare, “What could I just be Mary Catherine?!”

So has her brother Grantson Metz loved his. None of their names are modern/made up instead both have family mn at least 8 generations old and heavily researched Old English first names. With the trends out there right now, I see where it could be easy to assume any or all of their names are made up :upside_down_face:

They did/do have some spelling and pronunciation issues from time to time, but I stand by my declaration that obscurity and intrigue in a name are worth it (as long as it’s founded in history and family roots and not too kre8tivvv  )

Grantson is such a cute name!!! a lot of older names sound like modern names that someone made up, I’m surprised a lot of them aren’t more popular

I’m not 100% sure all of these are medieval, but I am very fond of them and I know they’re hundreds (if not over a thousand) years old:

[name_f]Adalind[/name_f]
[name_f]Adeliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Everild[/name_f]
[name_f]Joliet[/name_f]
[name_f]Loveday[/name_f]

Bersi
Cædmon
[name_m]Leofric[/name_m]
[name_m]Pascoe[/name_m]

I feel like I’m missing some but I can’t think of them now, I wouldn’t use most either but a couple (like [name_m]Caedmon[/name_m] and Adeliza)—I would consider in the right circumstances. [name_m]Pascoe[/name_m] too, I love the nn [name_m]Pax[/name_m] and I’ve long liked [name_m]Pascoe[/name_m] [name_m]Levi[/name_m] as a combo.

most of these were on the Medieval name list I’ve been using.

[name_f]Adalind[/name_f], Everlid, [name_f]Joliet[/name_f], Bersi, and [name_m]Pascoe[/name_m] are awesome and love the idea of [name_m]Pax[/name_m] as an nn for [name_m]Pascoe[/name_m]
