I get why this might be a thorny one because I totally understand why people wouldn’t like feminisations of male names on principle, as indeed on principle, neither do I. However, putting the feminist slant to one side, there are some feminisations I just like because I like the sound. I think it’s because they can often be clunky - bolting an -a onto the end of something with more traditionally masculine sounds will have that effect - and clunk is something that appeals to me generally. [name_f]My[/name_f] faves atm -
[name_f]Roberta[/name_f]
[name_f]Thomasin[/name_f]
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f]
[name_f]Frances[/name_f] (I guess?)
[name_f]Jamesina[/name_f]
[name_f]Albertine[/name_f]
Some others I like -
[name_f]Erika[/name_f]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Henrietta[/name_f]
[name_f]Ottoline[/name_f]
[name_f]Jacobina[/name_f]
[name_f]Henrietta[/name_f]
[name_f]Bernadette[/name_f]
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f]
[name_f]Nicole[/name_f]
[name_f]Frances[/name_f]
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f]
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]
[name_f]Louise[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Francesca[/name_f]
[name_f]Simone[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgina[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Lysandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]
[name_f]Ramona[/name_f]
[name_f]Octavia[/name_f]
[name_f]Adrienne[/name_f]
[name_f]Antonia[/name_f]
I’m sure there’s more but off top of my head, those are all the names on my list that have a corresponding masculine name.
[name_f]Roberta[/name_f] is my favourite! I’m not even keen on [name_m]Robert[/name_m], but I’ve loved [name_f]Roberta[/name_f] since I read the Railway Children.
[name_f]Timothea[/name_f] is another good one!
Yeah I adore [name_f]Roberta[/name_f], and it’s just really good to say And like you, I don’t like [name_m]Robert[/name_m]. In fact I like barely any of the masculine counterparts to the names I’ve mentioned.
I love this category! My first name is actually a feminisation of a boy name. My absolute fav ones are:
Frances (nn Frankie for a girl is just so cute)
Maxine (nn Max, same sentiment as Frankie)
Josephine
Georgiana
Philippa
Thomasin
Augusta
Louise
Charlotte
Henriette
I like [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Ottoline[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Louise[/name_f], and [name_f]Harriet[/name_f].
Not sure if [name_f]Thea[/name_f] and [name_f]Leona[/name_f] are feminizations of [name_m]Theo[/name_m] and [name_m]Leon[/name_m] or just happen to sound similar, but I like those a lot too.
I tend to prefer ones that feel distinct on their own:
Charlotte
Camila
Emmanuelle
Felicity
Georgiana/Georgina
Josephine
Leni
Leona
Petra
Vitória
If I think about it, I recognize that there is some sort of tie to Charles, Camilo, Emmanuel, Felix, George, Joseph, Leonard/Lenny, Leon/Leo, Peter, and Victor/Vitor, but I really have to think about it?
ETA: and Olivia/Livia, which I totally forgot was even tied to Oliver/Livius/Livio. . So in that vein, also Aurelia and Cecilia!
Oh I love [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]! But in my mind it’s more of a nature name than just a feminization of [name_m]Clement[/name_m], if that makes sense. So for me it simply didn’t come to mind immediately upon reading the title.
Back to the question:
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Alessia[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]
[name_f]Francesca[/name_f]
[name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]
[name_f]Leona[/name_f]
Typing this I realise there’s sooo many feminization names but a lot are just distinctively female in my head I don’t necessarily pair them up with the male versions. Like [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] is more common than [name_m]Aurelius[/name_m], so I think of it as just a very feminine name instead of a feminization. Now if we talk about [name_f]Georgette[/name_f], [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f], etc then yes, definitely sound like feminization.
