Favourite nickname for Hermione

What is your favourite nickname for [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]? I personally like nn’s to be informal and cutesy.

Also what do you think of [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]? What impression does it give?

Thanks

I know a lot of people will disagree with me but I personally don’t love it. The first thing thing that comes to mind is “Hermy”, but I am not very creative. Maybe [name_f]Erma[/name_f]?

NN possibilities: [name_f]Mimi[/name_f], [name_f]Maia[/name_f], [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], Myne (my-nee), Hermy (sounds like germ-y though), [name_f]Henny[/name_f], [name_f]Mina[/name_f], Yaya (a stretch, I admit), [name_f]Onnie[/name_f], [name_f]Yani[/name_f]

I always think of [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] in the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] series. As a name, I like it a lot. But personally, I wonder if it is okay to name a girl - for like the rest of her life - with a name so identifiable as “Oh! A [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] name!”

But on the other hand, I love the name [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] so much, which is most famous from a [name_m]Fleetwood[/name_m] [name_m]Mac[/name_m] song in the 1970s. If I named a girl [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f] in 2014, does it really matter that I got it from a 70s song? Is that a bad thing, or even relevant, in 2014?

[name_f]My[/name_f] point is that [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is a cute name and in a couple of decades, who knows if anyone will remember [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], or even care? And what if the next twenty years sees other famous [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] references (a new tennis player, a Nobel prize winner, whatever) - then will anyone care where you got the name from anyway?

So if you like it a lot go for it.

I love [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] - in fact, I adore her. On the plus side, it’s one of the many (once obscure) Greek names that many people can actually pronounce these days (due to [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] series), but on the down side, she’d be constantly met with [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] comments. That said, in the HP series, [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is an incredible character and therefore has only positive associations so again, that’s a plus. It’s tricky one. It depends if you/she would worry about endless associations when meeting people. As a [name_f]Zena[/name_f] born in the 80’s I was associated with the Warrior [name_f]Princess[/name_f] ([name_f]Xena[/name_f]) a lot as a kid, but when the series ended, so did the comments (I rarely get that association anymore). To be fair though, [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] is much more global and will surely stick around for many, many years to come. Yeah, not sure. Obviously, as you can see, I’m querying the same thing, so I will be sure to watch this thread and see what others think.

As for nicknames, if I were to use the name I’d go with [name_f]Maia[/name_f], [name_f]Io[/name_f] or if I were feeling particularly out-there, Ero.

I don’t think there are any great easy go to nicknames for [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]. I think “my-nee” is the easiest one but I don’t think there any that aren’t a stretch that could be used as a formal name at times like somebody named [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] might always go by [name_f]Beth[/name_f]. I would think if you used [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] then you would mostly be calling and writing the full name and possibly using Mynee (or however you’d spell it) just to shorten things up at times when speaking. Like I call my daughter [name_f]Mary[/name_f] mare sometimes but I wouldn’t ever write it out or use it to refer to her when speaking to others about her.

I saw someone on here suggest Hemma as a nickname for Hermione. I thought that was sweet. And much nicer than Hermie in my personal opinion. I also like Mya/Maia, and Mimi.

I love Hermione! It has always seemed very mythological to me, even before I knew the history behind it. I do automatically think of Harry Potter, but that to me isn’t a bad thing. Hermione is such a strong female character. A good character to have an association with.

Add on…
I have a friend named Milo and we call him Mi/My. It could work for Hermione. It probably wouldn’t be a nn you write out a lot. But it’s cute none the less.

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Ione[/name_f]?

[name_f]Minnie[/name_f] is definitely my favorite [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] nn! [name_f]Honey[/name_f] could work too, though it’s a bit more of a stretch and more of an affectionate pet name. I wouldn’t use [name_f]Maia[/name_f] because that isn’t a nickname at all to me, it’s a whole name on its own with no relation to [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], just a vaguely similar sound…to me it would be like calling someone names [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] “[name_f]Agnes[/name_f]” as a nickname, it’s just a different name, not a nickname for [name_f]Agatha[/name_f]. [name_u]Mio[/name_u] could be kind of cute for [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], maybe? I love [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] though, it’s just darling.

I love [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]!! She is classical, elegant, whimsical, yet enchanting. I love the nickname [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] and Mione. I would go for it. Name your little princess [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]. And I would be honored if she carries the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] potter association. Most people will think it’s cool. I know I do. All in all it’s a fabulous name.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I really like [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], [name_f]Ione[/name_f] and [name_u]Mio[/name_u]

I’ve read and had some bad comments from people on this name, but I figure if [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] and [name_f]Wendy[/name_f] (which was actually made up by JM [name_u]Barrie[/name_u]) can both be used without being teased about their literary references than why not [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]? And as some of you have already said, [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]'s [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is hardly a bad role model! Thanks for the nice comments everyone

I don’t like the name at all.
I think it’s ridiculously trendy these days too.
I don’t see why [name_f]Mia[/name_f] “[name_f]Mya[/name_f]” wouldn’t work for a nn.

I love the name especially with the nn [name_f]Mia[/name_f]. Unfortunately it’s not a feasible name in the Netherlands. Otherwise I would use it in a heartbeat.
