Favourite pretty girls names with beautiful meanings?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone!
Meanings are really important to me when brainstorming names. I’ve recently thought of the names [name_f]Winifred[/name_f], meaning “holy, blessed reconciliation,” and "joy and peace”, as well as [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] meaning “pure and holy”, and [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] “gift of God”.
Unfortunately, these names are a little too old-fashioned to ever actually use in the real world, despite the fact that I love them. If I ever had a kid, I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t like having one of these names :cold_sweat:.
I’d really appreciate it if you guys could give me some suggestions of names with similar vibes and similar meanings, but slightly less old fashioned and able to be used in the real world?
Thank you so much.

Oh no, I would love to be named Winifred or Dorothy, especially Dorothy

Agnes I don’t know, but by Pureness not necessarily the Christian one? I mean. It in Greek just means “sincere, pure, honest” (studying ancient greek) or “chaste, holy” but as long as you chose the meaning…

Tbh I think Elizabeth and variants have a way more religious meaning (God is my oath) with NO other possible interpretations and that is why I love the name Elisabeth and Elsa/Elsie/Ilse (in the tops on my list) but it is a gp for me because I am not religious

Said so I really like Agata (You can spell it Agatha or Agathe too) which is a femenine form of Agathos, αγαθός which in Ancient Greek it meant a lot of things:

  1. Good, well, nice, goodness itself
  2. Fit
  3. Capable, of skills
  4. Courageous / valorous / brave
  5. Of good morality
  6. Honest / sincere
  7. Virtuous
  8. Noble, excellent
  9. Useful
    Etc

And Friederike / variants like Federica (common in my country), Frederique etc. It can mean queen of the peace and many other things

Ludmila / Lyudmila / Ludmilla “Beloved by the people/country”

Nadia “Hope” ; Vera / Verena “Faith / Truthful” ; Fiammetta ‘little flame”

Mira “sea / peace / world” ; Mathilda “powerful warrior / mighty in battle” ; Marion “little princess”

Also Beatrice / Beatrix

Pandora “all the gifts” ; Thea “goddess” (literally goddess in the Ancient Greek language…) ; Clara (bright, famous) ; Rosamund (rose of the world)

[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] is actively trending upwards and is one of my favorite names, and [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] and [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] will probably catch on soon. [name_f]Vintage[/name_f] is in fashion so while these names aren’t super common they also wouldn’t stand out as weird old lady names for a little kid these days.
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f] “gift of god”
[name_f]Theodosia[/name_f] “giving to god”
[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] “golden”
[name_f]Roxanne[/name_f] “dawn”

Honestly [name_f]Winifred[/name_f], [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] & [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] are gorgeous and feel like hipster gems. I’ve definitely encountered children with these names as either a first or middle name especially in hipster circles! Don’t rule these beauties out :white_heart:

Here are some ideas hopefully you like them and count any repeats as me being in agreement with the berries

I notice that a lot of the names you like have a meaning based around G-d and holiness. I’m not sure if this is purposeful part of the appeal off the name or just a coincidence so will suggest names with religious meanings and some with not.

[name_f]Annabel[/name_f] ~ loving
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] ~ happiness
[name_f]Verity[/name_f] ~ truth
[name_f]Allegra[/name_f] ~ joyous
[name_f]Thea[/name_f] ~ goddess/godly
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] ~ she who brings happiness; blessed
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] ~ daughter of the sea
Eve/Evie ~ life
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] ~ most holy
[name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] ~ resurrection

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps

Not sure where you are, but [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] ranks at #177, [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] at #412 and [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] at #513 (with [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] at #204) in the UK so these names certainly are being used

Still, some other ideas:

[name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] (peace)
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] (favour, grace)
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] (bright, pure)
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] (pure)
[name_f]Inez[/name_f] (variant of Agnes)
[name_f]Susanna[/name_f] (lily)
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] (gazelle)
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] (my father is joy)
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] (god is my oath)
[name_f]Talia[/name_f] (dew from God)
[name_f]Irina[/name_f] (peace)
[name_f]Mira[/name_f] (one meaning is peace - others include wonder, world, sea, light)
[name_f]Frederika[/name_f] (peaceful ruler) - also, [name_f]Freda[/name_f]

Thank you so much! These are beautiful. And yes, I’m a Catholic [name_u]Christian[/name_u], so having a meaning that honours faith is really important to me. And those meanings felt really stunning, especially [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] and [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] and [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] are my favourites from here

Wow that’s so interesting that you’re studying Ancient Greek!
I really love [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] too, but I decided to pick between [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] and [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] for the post. All those meanings for [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] are lovely! And I prefer the pronunciation of [name_f]Agata[/name_f], but the spelling of [name_f]Agatha[/name_f].
I really love [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f], but the -Beth ending makes it unusable for me. Also, outside of the name nerd world, it generally gets shortened to [name_f]Liz[/name_f].
[name_u]Love[/name_u] these suggestions!

That’s good to know! Thank you. I didn’t realise [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] was trending upwards!

[name_f]Liz[/name_f]? The majorities I know are all [name_f]Elisa[/name_f], Ellie/Eli and [name_f]Ela[/name_f], which I think are nice nicknames! (Elisabeth / Elisabetta) Maybe it is just the country / region thing!

The only [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (this spelling) I know is called [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]. She lives in the US too!

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourites are:
[name_u]Florence[/name_u] - “flourishing and prosperous”
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] - “rainbow”
[name_f]Thea[/name_f] - “goddess, godly”
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f] - “the gem pearl”
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] - “pledged to god”
[name_f]Amy[/name_f] - “beloved”
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - “noble”
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] - “dawn”
[name_u]Celeste[/name_u] - “heavenly”
[name_f]Thalia[/name_f] - “to flourish”
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f] - “delicate”
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f] - “star”
[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] - “the golden one”
Selene/a - “moon goddess”
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] - “victory”
[name_f]Esther[/name_f] - “star”

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] - “radiant, shining one”
Sophie/a - “wisdom”
[name_u]Zoe[/name_u] - “life”
[name_f]Anabella[/name_f] - “loving”
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] - “moon”
[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] - “pledged to god”
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f] - “princess”
[name_f]Nicole[/name_f] - “victory”
[name_f]Mila[/name_f] - “gracious”

I’m in Australia and it’s almost exclusively [name_f]Liz[/name_f] over here. It’s a shame, there are so many nice nicknames for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]! If I had to use [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] I could possibly lean more towards the [name_u]French[/name_u] spelling of [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] :grinning:
