I’ve seen [name_f]Pam[/name_f] talk in some of her posts about how she seems to enjoy the long O sound in names and I’ve realised that most of the names that I love have a prominent O sound- [name_m]Conan[/name_m], [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Rosa[/name_f] (and my favourite nickname, [name_u]Romy[/name_u]), [name_m]Otis[/name_m], [name_u]Zooey[/name_u], [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_m]Booker[/name_m], [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_m]Eoin[/name_m], [name_m]Boone[/name_m], [name_m]Jerome[/name_m], [name_u]Sloane[/name_u], [name_f]Oona[/name_f], [name_m]Oran[/name_m]/[name_m]Odhran[/name_m], [name_u]Lionel[/name_u], [name_m]Amos[/name_m], [name_m]Boaz[/name_m], [name_f]Cora[/name_f]- I could go on
Obviously there are exceptions, but I thought it was an interesting trend and it has even helped me in searching for new names I may like
I was wondering if anyone else had noticed a similar trend in their favourites? Or even in the popularity lists?
Also if you think there are differences in the sounds that appeal to people of different languages, perhaps some names have not been popular in your country/culture because some sounds may be unappealing in certain languages
I’d love to hear your thoughts, I find this idea really interesting! Thank you
I don’t like female names that end in “ah” sounds. I prefer stronger names that sound like they’ve ended. (All of my names in my signature have this).
My partner and I also often like “Au” sounds (which in my accent sounds like the word “awe” as said in a british accent or the word “aube” in [name_m]French[/name_m], not the “ah/oh” of the american accent, which I don’t like). So I often like names like [name_f]Emeraude[/name_f], [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], [name_u]Auden[/name_u], [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_f]Maud[/name_f], and my favourite name - Aurembiaix.
I find more consistency in my girls names. The boys names are kind of sporatic.
I really like long A (“ay”) sounds (as seen in my favorite names [name_f]Ada[/name_f], Edelweiss, [name_f]Veda[/name_f], Mabel)
And the long E (“ee”) (as seen in [name_f]Frieda[/name_f], [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f])
[name_u]Love[/name_u] the V sound ([name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f], [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Veronika[/name_f])
Also, I adore the letter L. I’m a sucker for a good L name!
And for some reason I don’t like the long I (“eye”) sound, so I’m not a fan of [name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_f]Ione[/name_f], [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f], etc. While they are great names, something about that long I just doesn’t sound good to my ear.
I love quick -ia at the end of girl names. Like [name_f]Avia[/name_f], [name_f]Alia[/name_f], [name_f]Aria[/name_f] [name_f]Livia[/name_f], [name_f]Lucia[/name_f]. It needs to be two syllables too such as ay- vi-a. I also recently have had a crush on 3 syllable names that end in A. This is seen in alot of my favorites like the ones above and [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]. I also really love L sound and I think the letter L is one of the most elegant letters in the English alphabet.
Thanks guys! [name_u]Love[/name_u] seeing these replies
It seems like different people all have different sounds which appeal to them
I agree Vs and Ls seem to be very pretty and feminine, and I also enjoy the ‘Au’ sound and I like that short “ya” at the end of [name_f]Aria[/name_f] etc. Names with y sounds in the middle are just fun to say, don’t you think? [name_m]Rudyard[/name_m], [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m], [name_u]Danya[/name_u], all run off the tongue nicely
I seem to be drawn to names that have a “y” that sounds like a short “i”, and names that end with “n” or “nn”. I also like names that start with vowels.
L sound. Most of the names on my list have an L sound. Especially the girls’ one: [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Violetta[/name_f], [name_f]Catalina[/name_f]… Next would be -ah sound and V sound, I think.
I’ve found that, for both girls an boys, I like the short e sound–a soft ‘eh’ is present in many of my names, first and middle. I don’t like girls’ names that end in -a, usually. Lately, I’ve also noticed a lot of L, M, N, and R’s in my greater name list, as well as the S sound, whether from S’s or C’s.
