[name_m]Hi[/name_m], and [name_f]TIA[/name_f] for any and all feedback.
We are expecting a baby boy early next year. We’d love to honour both his grandads with his name, though not necessarily using their exact names.
My dad’s name is [name_m]Linton[/name_m], which he has always found a little “hard to wear”. I thought of the name [name_m]Aston[/name_m] as it shares the same meaning (settlement or enclosure), so there’s a link there.
We’re reasonably set on the middle name [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m] to honour his other grandad’s heritage.
I’d be most grateful for feedback on our front-runner [name_m]Aston[/name_m] [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m], and/or any other suggestions to honour [name_m]Linton[/name_m].
I think you would find [name_m]Aston[/name_m] hard to wear also. All I can hear is that first syllable, which would lead to some unfortunate nicknames. A friend of mine decided to let go of [name_u]Aspen[/name_u] for the some reasons. What about [name_u]Lennon[/name_u] [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m]? It sounds similar to [name_m]Linton[/name_m], with a rock and roll edge thanks to the Beatles. The name is growing in popularity, so it isn’t unheard of, but is far from being common.
As far as meaning goes, most names with the ending of -ton have a meaning pertaining to a settlement. On Nameberry, [name_m]Linton[/name_m] is listed as meaning “flax settlement” while [name_m]Aston[/name_m] means “eastern settlement”.
Here are some more:
[name_m]Layton[/name_m] - settlement with a leek garden
[name_m]Barton[/name_m] - from the barley settlement
[name_m]Charlton[/name_m] - settlement of free men
[name_m]Kenton[/name_m]- royal settlement
[name_m]Dalton[/name_m]- settlement in the valley
There are many more listed on Nameberry. My favorite is [name_m]Layton[/name_m] [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m]!!!
What about [name_m]Lyndon[/name_m] or [name_u]Linden[/name_u] [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m]? I would assume it sounds similar to [name_m]Linton[/name_m], and I think [name_u]Linden[/name_u]/[name_m]Lyndon[/name_m] [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m] is super cute! I knew a little boy about 10 years ago with the name [name_m]Lyndon[/name_m] and I’ve loved it ever since.
When I hear [name_m]Aston[/name_m] I go to [name_m]Aston[/name_m] [name_m]Martin[/name_m] (the luxury car line) straight away, and then driving to roads/[name_m]Rhodes[/name_m]… it just seems sort of themey. I’m not a huge fan, even though I think [name_m]Aston[/name_m] looks/sounds nice, and I love the idea of [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m] as a middle.
All I hear in Aston is a**. I definitely would NOT use it. I do like the middle name Rhodes though! @josie1497 has an excellent point about the meanings being connected between all -ton names; that gives you tons (pun intended ) of options!
Other suggestions:
Leighton Rhodes - quite handsome! Shares the “L” in Linton as well.
Clifton
Newton
Ashton
Clayton
Weston
Quinton
Sutton
Colton
Patton
Trenton
Benton
In theory I really want to like [name_m]Aston[/name_m], and [name_m]Aston[/name_m] [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m] is a great pairing. However, you have to consider how much teasing there would be. I agree that another -on name would be nice with [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m], or maybe you can think of another way to honor your dad’s heritage as well. I would keep [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m]!
I actually really like [name_m]Aston[/name_m], which (don’t know if you or the granddad’s are fans), is a really great name for [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Bond[/name_m] fans. I just wouldn’t pair it up with [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m] because the [name_m]Aston[/name_m] [name_m]Martin[/name_m] is [name_m]Bond[/name_m]'s signature car and [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m], well, you get it. I also like the suggestion of [name_u]Linden[/name_u]. [name_m]Linus[/name_m] could be an option as it incorporates the first part of your dad’s name… I’m not a huge fan of [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m] though, but really nothing against it either. [name_m]Just[/name_m] be careful that whichever first name you pair with [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m] will sound like an address rather than a person’s name.
I think [name_m]Aston[/name_m] would constantly get mistaken for [name_u]Ashton[/name_u], so not a huge fan. Middle name [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m], though? Sounds good with almost anything. I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the suggestion of [name_u]Linden[/name_u], and I’ll also add [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] and [name_m]Landon[/name_m].
I don’t think [name_m]Aston[/name_m] honors [name_m]Linton[/name_m] but to each their own. If [name_m]Linton[/name_m] is off the table, I think the soundalike names that have already been suggested are good options. [name_u]Linden[/name_u] [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m] would be my choice. I would like [name_u]Lennon[/name_u] with another middle name; [name_u]Lennon[/name_u] [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m] sounds like linen roads.
Thanks for taking the time to offer suggestions everyone, i sure appreciate it!
There are some fab suggestions on this thread, thanks. Our surname is two syllables, starting with L and ending in N, so a few great ones here unfortunately won’t work… i adore [name_u]Lennon[/name_u] and [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] but they are both out for that reason, but there are some great other ideas to think about
