Feedback on Middle Names for Silas

Hi! Expecting baby 3 :heartpulse:. We won’t find out gender for a while yet, but I am excited. We are up in the air for girl names but we long had our boy name chosen: Silas.

When we picked the name Silas 9 years ago it was much less popular. I am saddened that our name choice isn’t as unique as it once was but husband and I are both too attached to it to give it up. My husband is Paul and we chose Silas because of the connection between Paul and Silas in the Bible.

Now my husband’s favorite middle name option is Lockwood. It was his Grandma’s maiden name, which I think is lovely, and I love the name itself. But nobody we have mentioned it to (in my family or his) like it. Mainly it seems to be because it is a last name, which I could see being an issue if it was the first name but I don’t think that middle names need to double as traditional first names. I would be willing to fight for the name with my family, but since his mom disapproves I feel like an attempt to honor his family that his family disapproves of sort of defeats the purpose?

The rest of the middle name options are connected to my family. My first born daughter has my paternal grandma’s middle name as her middle name and my second born daughter has a variation of my maternal grandma’s first name as her first name.

  1. Wesley, my late uncle whom I dearly loved had the middle name Wesley. This was originally planned as baby boy #2 name but since the chances of that happening seem like a long shot now, I don’t want to pass over this name on account of that. My husband is now starting to disagree with the name choice because it is my nephew’s middle name but I don’t agree that that is enough to discard it.

  2. Oliver, my dad’s step-dad’s surname. A nice shout out to my family. My husband loves the name but is hesitant because (yet again) because my niece is named Olivia.

  3. Charles, my dad’s name. I love my wonderful father but don’t really love his name? And I don’t love the Silas Charles double s sound either. And our kids already get named after my dad because we hyphenated our names…

We like Biblical, nature and family names. Family name options are above, haven’t full delved into Biblical or nature options yet so besides feedback on listed names suggestions are welcomed.

What a tricky situation.

I like [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m] -literary sounding and cool - but I get what you mean about it defeating the point if his family don’t like it. Maybe a similar sounding name? [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m], [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_u]Hayward[/name_u], [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_m]Rockwell[/name_m], [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_m]Lorcan[/name_m]?

[name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] is a solid choice and I’d say [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] are so popular, that it’s not a big deal they share a similar sound. [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_u]Charles[/name_u] sounds good to me but if you don’t love it, I’d look for something else. [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] maybe?

I like [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] & [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]. [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m] would be an interesting middle name but I see your predicament about family. [name_m]Carl[/name_m] could maybe be an alternative to honour [name_u]Charles[/name_u]?

I’ll also suggest [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_u]Oleander[/name_u], it came to mind as it’s a nature name and reminds me of [name_m]Oliver[/name_m].

I also meant to say I think this is a great suggestion

[name_m]Lockwood[/name_m] is really cool and sounds great with [name_m]Silas[/name_m], and I think that the decision should be up to what you and your husband like. If you are hesitant, though, maybe another -wood name, like [name_u]Atwood[/name_u], [name_m]Elwood[/name_m], [name_m]Fleetwood[/name_m], or [name_m]Sherwood[/name_m]? [name_m]Just[/name_m] [name_m]Locke[/name_m] would also be handsome.
Regarding [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], I think that they would be okay because they would be used as middles, especially [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], because it is a slightly different name. [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_u]Charles[/name_u] does sound a bit off, though, with the double “s” sounds.

Some more suggestions:
[name_u]Atlas[/name_u]
[name_u]Benjamin[/name_u]
[name_u]Ever[/name_u]
[name_u]Gabriel[/name_u]

I think [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m] is very handsome! But I do see your point that if you want to honour his family and his family don’t like the name, that’s a bit trickier. Would his family be open / would you be open to having a conversation with them about what names would be actually meaningful to them and working within those parameters?

[name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_m]Carl[/name_m]? [name_m]Carl[/name_m] is a form of [name_u]Charles[/name_u] that doesn’t have the double s ending. [name_m]Carlo[/name_m], [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_m]Chuck[/name_m], and [name_m]Siarl[/name_m] (Sharl) are all also options, if a little out of the box.

[name_u]Wesley[/name_u] is a lovely name, but firstly I don’t love [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] (Wesley [name_m]Silas[/name_m] works nicely, but [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] just doesn’t flow as well imo). Secondly, I think [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] is also very much on the up in the same way as [name_m]Silas[/name_m] and if you liked how unusual [name_m]Silas[/name_m] is I don’t think [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] helps with that more unusual feel.

I like [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m] too, I like [name_u]Charles[/name_u] more as a first name.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite is definitely [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m]! It feels so edgy and fun! I wouldn’t worry about the surname middle (although you should respect your family’s wishes) as I think some names like that work in the middle spot, such as [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m]. I’m not a huge fan of [name_u]Wesley[/name_u] and [name_u]Charles[/name_u] with Silas; [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] is nice and I wouldn’t worry too much if [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] is her FN and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] is his MN. [name_f]My[/name_f] ultimate favorite from your list is [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m], and I also love the combo of [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m]! [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps, best of luck!

[name_u]Love[/name_u] suggestions of [name_m]Locke[/name_m] and [name_m]Carlo[/name_m]

You won’t regret [name_m]Silas[/name_m]. I just named my son that and spent all pregnancy worried about how it is more popular. It still isn’t as popular as other names, and I don’t even think about the popularity anymore.

Also, I’d go for [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m]. You and your husband like it. That’s all that matters imo.
