Feeling seriously confused about my boy list!

Hey Berries!

I’m feeling lost with my boy names right now, which is discouraging because my girls list feels perfect. I’m about to embark on a hugo rant, so if you aren’t up for that, please just take a look at the girl names in my UC and suggest boy names based off of them (or just names you think I’d like!)

An analysis of my boy names:

Part 1: names that are staying on the list no matter what:
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m], [name_m]Linus[/name_m], [name_m]Philip[/name_m]. Pretty sure about [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] and [name_m]Finnian[/name_m].

Part 2: the possible discards:
[name_u]August[/name_u]/Augustus: [name_u]August[/name_u] was one of my favorites about a year ago, and I still think it’s a really nice name. The problem is that I never put him in sibsets because it’s too close to [name_f]Anya[/name_f]. [name_f]Anya[/name_f] isn’t going anywhere, so it feels like [name_u]August[/name_u] has to go. I tried switching it to [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], but it doesn’t feel quite right for me.

[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]: just doesn’t feel like a name I would use. [name_f]My[/name_f] boyfriend also made a passing comment that made it seem like he didn’t like it, so that’s stuck with me.

[name_u]Elliot[/name_u]: I keep going back and forth on this one… I guess it just doesn’t sparkle like it used to. [name_m]Just[/name_m] not really special to me anymore.

[name_m]Cedric[/name_m]: maybe too grown up sounding? I also don’t like the repeating “ed” with this and [name_m]Edwin[/name_m].

[name_m]Finnian[/name_m]: Ok, I love this name, so it’s probably not going anywhere. The only problem with it is that my boyfriend’s brother is named [name_u]Finn[/name_u]. I don’t want any future confusion.

**Part 3: bring in the replacements!
[name_m]Bennet[/name_m]: I recently took [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] off my list (it was just feeling a bit bland.) Is [name_m]Bennet[/name_m] the perfect compromise? Especially if I remove [name_u]Elliot[/name_u], this feels like a good mix.

[name_m]Casper[/name_m]: This has been on and off my list for awhile. I really do like it, but is it too out there? Too ghost-y? Realistically, I probably couldn’t use it if my boyfriend and I stay together, because it really doesn’t work with his last name. (Sorry for so much boyfriend talk, it’s just been difficult to incorporate that aspect of my life into the name-collecting process.)

[name_u]Tristan[/name_u]: I’ve always loved the sound of this, but it’s really similar to my boyfriend’s name ([name_u]Christian[/name_u]) and I’m not a fan of the name’s dark history. That said, it’s probably fine for a UC. I’m totally overthinking this one.

Part 4: conclusion!

August/Augustus - if you find it too close to [name_f]Anya[/name_f] and [name_f]Anya[/name_f] is your preference, I’d lose [name_u]August[/name_u]

Hugo -I love [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] but if it doesn’t sit right with you, I’d lose it

Elliot -again, if it’s lost it’s spark, I’d cut it

Cedric - [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] is sweet sounding to me and I don’t think it’s too close to [name_m]Edwin[/name_m]. It doesn’t feel like it’s right for you though

Finnian is lovely though it would be too close for [name_u]Finn[/name_u] to me -it would feel like an honour and it depends if you want that

Bennet is nice and I think it’s a great replacement for [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] and [name_u]Eliot[/name_u]. I do prefer the spelling [name_u]Bennett[/name_u]

Casper is a lovely name so I’d keep it on the back burner

Tristan -so this is my favourite boy’s name so i might be a bit biased, but I do love the soft yet strong feel. I’d keep it for your user card though i do think it’s a bit close to [name_u]Christian[/name_u]

I personally don’t think [name_f]Anya[/name_f] and [name_u]August[/name_u] are too close! I do see what you mean about [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] and [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] though, since they could possibly both go by [name_m]Eddie[/name_m].
I’d say cut [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] and maybe move [name_u]August[/name_u] and [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] to a long list off of the UC? Maybe add [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] to a long list as well, it might sparkle for you again one day! I do think [name_m]Bennet[/name_m] would be a good compromise for [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] and [name_u]Elliot[/name_u], and I think it goes nicely with [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] and [name_m]Linus[/name_m]. As for [name_m]Casper[/name_m] I don’t think it’s too Ghost-y…maybe the [name_m]Kasper[/name_m] spelling would help?
[name_u]Tristan[/name_u] feels like it fits the least with your other names in my honest opinion.

Linus is perfect, [name_m]Just[/name_m] name him [name_m]Linus[/name_m]! :slight_smile:

Your top 3 are perfect! I would say [name_m]Casper[/name_m] is a great fit in there. Maybe even as a middle? [name_m]Philip[/name_m] [name_m]Casper[/name_m]?

I can see [name_m]Bennet[/name_m] and [name_u]Tristan[/name_u] working as middle name options.

On the discard list - I probably would discard anything you’re not feeling the warm fuzzies about! Especially since you’ve already got a great top 3 that aren’t going anywhere.

How about:

Have you had [name_m]Simon[/name_m] on your list before or am I going mad? I feel like [name_m]Simon[/name_m] is perfect for you!

Wesley, [name_m]Linus[/name_m] and [name_m]Philip[/name_m] are a solid top 3. I love [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] and [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] too! [name_u]August[/name_u] is nice and feels very you, I don’t think it clashes with [name_f]Anya[/name_f] particularly but if you’re not feeling it then fair enough. [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] is a name I’ve never particularly liked so I won’t try to convince you to keep it!

Any names that just don’t feel special anymore, I’d say get rid of them and try something else, you can always bring them back later! Sometimes you just need to freshen the list a bit.

With that in mind, [name_u]Bennett[/name_u] feels like a great option for you and I could totally see it on your list. On the other hand, [name_m]Casper[/name_m] is one that’s on my list, but it doesn’t really feel like you to me, but I do objectively love it. (I think the ghost thing makes it more cool if anything!) [name_u]Tristan[/name_u] is nice.

[name_m]Cassian[/name_m] - feels like a more you take on [name_m]Casper[/name_m]
[name_m]Cormac[/name_m] - kinda like [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] but the “[name_m]Mac[/name_m]” part is more youthful imo

Finnian could be a nice honour name for your boyfriend’s brother. But if you want to avoid that then I understand why you’d want to remove it

First of all, I just want to say how funny it is that in your first paragraph, huge autocorrected to “Hugo.”

My advice for the names you mention that you don’t feel like names you would use or feel special (Hugo and Elliot) is to take them off your user card. If you don’t miss them, great! They’re probably not the right names for you right now. However, if you do miss them and think about them, bring them back and give them another look.

It sounds as if you still like August, so I would leave him; you never know what names you’ll end up using if given a chance. Additionally, names on user cards can be close (she says with Ida and Ira both on her user card, refusing to give either up).

For Cedric, I’m biased because I love it. I can’t tell if your concern is that it isn’t a stylistic match with your other names due to it sounding “grown up” (I think it’s a great match), or if you’re concerned about usability for a little kid (I think it would be fine), or if it doesn’t feel approachable or like a name you would use. If it’s the last reason, I would take it off your user card. If it’s either of the first two reasons, I would keep it for now. I don’t think it’s too close to Edwin, but if the similarity bothers you, I think you should lose it.

If you love Finnian, keep it! On a user card, you don’t need to be concerned about its implications in your real life, especially if you’re not planning on having kids anytime soon (which I would imagine is the case). You can’t predict the future, and people can be moving parts in your lives, so I think you might be torturing yourself a bit trying to account for (and remove names for) any possible outcome :slightly_smiling_face: . It’s okay to love a name and keep it on your list even if you’re not sure you can use it!

Bennet is the perfect compromise if you love it as more than the sum of its parts! If you’re adding it just to fill space, don’t add it.

I think Casper is usable- the ghost association isn’t that bad, and it’s also fading (no pun intended). I also think that if you and your boyfriend aren’t actively planning for your future or making a joint list, you can keep names that don’t go perfectly with his.

For Tristan, like I said before, I don’t think this is a problem with your boyfriend’s name. I also don’t think the history is too much of a problem!

Instead of Cedric (which I think is handsome, btw) what about Cecil or Cedar?

Another alternative to Finnian could be Finnegan (doesn’t solve the Finn- deal, though)

Also I have an ancestor by the name of Auguste, not sure if it’s pronounced any differently.
