[name]Hi[/name] everyone! I am writing a paper for my women’s studies class in which we have to look at the media and how it portrays women, etc. For part of my paper I am going to discuss female characters with unisex (OR BOY’S) names and how they may be portrayed differently.
If you could please help me out and name some characters (and the show/movie they are from) with unisex names, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
From the top of my head:
[name]Robin[/name] from [name]How[/name] I Met Your Mother
[name]River[/name] from Firefly/ [name]Serenity[/name] or [name]Doctor[/name] Who
I suppose [name]Elliot[/name] from Scrubs could be considered unisex.
Adding:
Franky from Skins, though I can’t remember if her name was Francesca and she just went by Franky.
Sam from Hunted (tv series)
Linden from The Killing (tv series). Technically her last name but she almost solely goes by Linden.
Jocelyn from A Knight’s Tale.
Charlotte “Chuck” from Pushing Daisies.
Rory from Gilmore Girls.
Jordan from Scrubs.
[name]Spencer[/name] and [name]Aria[/name] from Pretty [name]Little[/name] Liars I absolutely loveeee. I actually liked both those names for girls before I started watching the show, so it was funny they were both included. I also heard people talking about a character named [name]Sutton[/name] on an ABC Family show which I think is interesting.
[name]Quinn[/name] (Glee)
[name]Fred[/name], though her full name was [name]Winifred[/name] ([name]Angel[/name])
[name]Remy[/name] (House)
[name]Lane[/name] and [name]Paris[/name] ([name]Gilmore[/name] Girls, guess you could kind of count [name]Rory[/name] too)
[name]Kendall[/name], [name]Madison[/name], [name]Jackie[/name], [name]Parker[/name] and [name]Mack[/name], though it was from her last name ([name]Veronica[/name] [name]Mars[/name]. a couple of the guys had unisex names too)
[name]Kelly[/name] ad [name]Jess[/name] (Misfits)
Soap Operas are notorious for using unisex names
[name]McKenna[/name] - [name]McKenna[/name] Shoots For The Stars (American Girl movie)
[name]Taylor[/name] - High School Musical
[name]Jessie[/name] - [name]Jessie[/name] (Disney show)
[name]London[/name] - Suite Life of [name]Zack[/name] + [name]Cody[/name]
[name]Charlie[/name] (nn for [name]Charlotte[/name]) - Good [name]Luck[/name] [name]Charlie[/name]
[name]Teddy[/name] - Good [name]Luck[/name] [name]Charlie[/name]
[name]Alex[/name] - Wizards of [name]Waverly[/name] Place
[name]Rocky[/name] (nn for [name]Raquel[/name]) - Shake It Up
[name]Sam[/name] (nn for [name]Samantha[/name]) - i[name]Carly[/name]
[name]Avery[/name] - Dog With A Blog
[name]Casey[/name] - Life With [name]Derek[/name]
[name]George[/name] - [name]Nancy[/name] [name]Drew[/name]
[name]Sydney[/name] - [name]Sydney[/name] White
[name]Jamie[/name] - A Walk To [name]Remember[/name]
[name]Terri[/name] - Raise Your Voice
[name]Kim[/name] - Cheaper By the Dozen
Sorry for all the children’s shows and movies, they seem to have the most unisex names.
[name]Sutton[/name] is from the show The Lying Game
[name]Sloane[/name] [name]Riley[/name] - [name]Grey[/name]'s Anatomy. She was the daughter of Dr. [name]Mark[/name] [name]Sloan[/name]
[name]Ellis[/name] and [name]Meredith[/name] ([name]Grey[/name]'s Anatomy)
[name]Sam/name [name]Jones[/name] (Sex and the City)
[name]Jo[/name] (The Facts of Life)
[name]Ace[/name] ([name]Doctor[/name] Who–Seventh [name]Doctor[/name])
[name]Alex[/name] [name]Blake[/name] (Criminal Minds)
[name]Jack[/name]- Mass Effect (video game)
[name]Carter[/name]- [name]Princess[/name] Protection Program
[name]Cam[/name] ([name]Camille[/name])- Bones
[name]Nikki[/name] (can’t remember if that’s her full name or not)- Numbers
Adding some more:
Andie Anderson- How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
DJ (Donna Jo)- Full House
Santana- Glee
Bo- Bo on the Go
Wow you guys are the best, thank you so much! This is going to help me write my paper so much.
Also I loved all of the [name]Doctor[/name] Who mentions, I didn’t even think of [name]Oswin[/name] at first.
