Feminine "Sydney" vs. Male Original "Sidney"

If I were to name my son [name]Sidney[/name], which was originally a man’s name before the feminine [name]Sydney[/name] boom, would people “get” that it is a boys name?

I like [name]Sidney[/name] and nickname [name]Sid[/name]. But has the name been officially been put into the girls category?

Not with an I, but in the US it has a definite borscht belt image, alon gwith [name]Milton[/name] or [name]Seymour[/name]. Still it’s a handsome name and could definitely be reclaimed.

[name]Sidney[/name] still works for a boy. I know two guys named [name]Sidney[/name], both under 20, and neither of them have a problem with their name. I like it.

I think it would work better as a middle name. [name]Sydney[/name] (and [name]Sidney[/name], to an extent) is so connected to girls now that I don’t think non-name nerds would get it at first. However, as a thorough '90s child, [name]Sidney[/name] and [name]Sid[/name] have been completely ruined for me by way of that maniacal child in [name]Toy[/name] [name]Story[/name].

[name]Sidney[/name] works very well for a boy! I’ve always considered it very male, despite the previously male spelling of [name]Sydney[/name] going female. It’s a hip vintage name on the rise over here- in 2011, more boys were named [name]Sidney[/name] than girls were named [name]Sydney[/name]

I know of two [name]Male[/name] [name]Sidney[/name]'s. [name]One[/name] being the superstar hockey player [name]Sidney[/name] [name]Crosby[/name] and the other being my best friend’s brother in law. It never seemed feminine for me. I associate the [name]Sydney[/name] version for girls, but mostly I associate it with Australia.

As long as you spell it [name]Sidney[/name] I think it’s a great name for a boy!

I think [name]Sydney[/name] on girls is going down in popularity, and [name]Sidney[/name] for boys can make a comeback. Where I live, most people’s first thought would be [name]Sidney[/name] [name]Crosby[/name].

Still a boys name, but only with an ‘i’. With a ‘y’, it’s a place name.

I think Sidney is a great name and I would love to hear a little boy with this name. I personally don’t know any Sidney/Sydney’s so I find it nice of each gender. I think people would understand that with an i it would be a boys name.

I think [name]Sidney[/name] would be a solid choice for a boy’s name. It doesn’t seem feminine to me at all. And the NN [name]Sid[/name] is very clearly male. I’d find it strange to meet a female [name]Sydney[/name] (I’ve never known anyone, male or female, with this name).

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Sidney[/name] on a boy! It’s never ever sounded feminine to me even spelled as [name]Sydney[/name] still all boy to me. Go for it!

[name]Sydney[/name] is on my list because it is my husbands favorite name for a girl (he met a cute little girl with the name once). I have decided to keep it in consideration for our future babies because it is the only name my husband has ever said he liked or suggested. I am not 100% sure on how I feel about the name because I only knew male Sidneys growing up and the y makes it look trendy to me. With all that being said, I definitely associate [name]Sidney[/name] with male and think it is a great name.

I love [name]Sidney[/name] as it makes me think of [name]Sidney[/name] [name]Crosby[/name].

There is nothing feminine about [name]Sidney[/name]/[name]Sydney[/name] to me.

I’ve only known one [name]Sidney[/name], he’s about 10.
There’s also the actor [name]Sidney[/name] Poitier who has a daughter named [name]Sydney[/name]

I’m from Australia so when I hear/see [name]Sydney[/name] or [name]Sidney[/name], I think my old home.

If I had to choose, I prefer the female version.
