Fennec or Fox?

After another loss and a long pregnancy, we are almost ready to meet our last and third baby, a girl. We’ve narrowed names down from the beginning, and I’m looking at either Fennec or [name_m]Fox[/name_m] as our daughter’s first name, paired with [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f] as the middle. I’m leaning toward Fennec, as [name_m]Fox[/name_m] has a kind of [name_f]Americana[/name_f] feel to it that doesn’t mesh to me as well as Fennec does with with [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f], but I still like them both.

Neither.

Honestly, I’d keep looking. Fennec is really close to “finnick”, which is essentially finicky. [name_m]Fox[/name_m] on a girl is just mean. Calling girls and women “foxy” is a derogatory term and having it be a child’s first name is definitely not any better.

Between the two I would
Go with Fennec, [name_m]Fox[/name_m] just sounds too masculine to me

Fennec absolutely sounds like “finnick,” and that’s what people will think you’re saying. [name_m]Fox[/name_m] is inappropriate, [name_f]IMO[/name_f], especially since it’s a slang term for an attractive person.

I would use [name_m]Fox[/name_m] because Fennec looks unfinished to me.

I’m going with neither as well…Fennec just doesn’t sound pleasing. What about [name_u]Finley[/name_u]? And [name_m]Fox[/name_m] is cruel. Never name a girl that, ever. For a boy it’s alright…I can see the appeal but for a girl it’s just wrong. It’s like naming your daughter Sexy.

I say Fennec. I don’t like [name_m]Fox[/name_m] on a girl.

I don’t really think they’re that bad, but I seem to be in the minority. [name_m]Fox[/name_m] could at least be in the middle or used as a nickname.

[name_f]Cricket[/name_f]
[name_u]Fable[/name_u]
[name_f]Sparrow[/name_f]
[name_m]Arrow[/name_m]
[name_u]Ever[/name_u]
[name_u]Echo[/name_u]
[name_f]Petal[/name_f]
[name_f]Poet[/name_f]
[name_f]Lupe[/name_f] / Lupa - wolf

I must agree. Maybe [name_m]Forest[/name_m] or [name_f]Farrah[/name_f]?

Why do you want to name your child after the Fennec fox? Is it your favourite animal? They’re cute but it seems odd to name your child after them, imo its like naming your child Labrador because you like labrador retrievers. Personally, I know if I were named Fennec, it would get tiring to hear ‘oh, like the fox?’ every time I introduce myself.

I do really like the name [name_m]Fox[/name_m], but only on a boy. It doesn’t feel right on a girl, mostly due to the word ‘foxy’ which is used to sexualise women as has been said.

Why not use [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f] as a first name?

Yeah I agree with everything that doesn’t like it. To me it’s a TERRIBLE name and both are bad idea. [name_m]Fox[/name_m] is an animal not a name for a person, [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. And Fennec sounds too masuline and not like a name for a little girl AT ALL. I do however agree with the person who suggested [name_u]Finley[/name_u], or even Fenley if you want to keep it close to the “fen” part of the name. [name_u]Finley[/name_u] [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f] sounds adorable!

Fennec as a middle name would be OK, but both would make terrible first names. [name_m]Fox[/name_m] especially is quite masculine, and is already too edgy for a lot of people.

I’d suggest if you really love both name your daughter First name Fennec Last name. That could actually be pretty cool depending on the other names you go with. I’d avoid other word-names, and maybe go with something edgy & feminine to bring Fennec over to the girls’ side but match its vibe.

[name_f]Ziva[/name_f] Fennec
[name_f]Vita[/name_f] Fennec
[name_f]Anja[/name_f] Fennec
[name_f]Zafira[/name_f] Fennec
[name_f]Junia[/name_f] Fennec
[name_f]Calista[/name_f] Fennec
[name_f]Winslet[/name_f] Fennec
[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] Fennec
[name_f]Elora[/name_f] Fennec
[name_f]Mira[/name_f] Fennec
[name_f]Audra[/name_f] Fennec
Ilili Fennec
[name_f]Athena[/name_f] Fennec

I like both! Of course, since [name_m]Fox[/name_m] is one of my top names, I like it more. However, Fennec is great and it gives you the option of [name_m]Fox[/name_m] (or Fen) as a nn. So, my vote goes to Fennec

I like Fennec [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f] better than [name_m]Fox[/name_m] [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f], because the X sound in foX and aleXandria is slightly repetitive. [name_m]Fox[/name_m] could also be teased, being called [name_f]Foxy[/name_f], which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but can be used as an insult. Fennec is much nicer in my opinion!

I like [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f] [name_m]Fox[/name_m], but I don’t think either are usable as first names, sorry.

I see a pp suggested [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f] [name_m]Fox[/name_m]…that flows beautifully.

I saw this on Wikipedia “fennec fox or fennec (Vulpes zerda)” and thought Zerda might be nice…the species name for the
fennec fox.

Zerda [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f]

But, between your original options, I would go with [name_m]Fox[/name_m]. I don’t think it is offensive. The ‘foxy’ references or nn will occur but ‘foxy’ is not the worst thing someone could call me. The name will not define your child, your child will define the name. Cheers to your unique name.

I keep thinking about Fennec. It has already grown on me since yesterday. Its kind of cute and sassy.
