Fern’s sister - long name okay?

Wondering if I’ve boxed myself in by picking such a short name (Fern) for my daughter. Some other girls names I like are a lot longer, but I’m concerned that they would make a good sister sibset with [name_f]Fern[/name_f]. Any thoughts?

[name_f]Love[/name_f] names like [name_f]Delaney[/name_f], [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f], [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], etc. But are those too much next to [name_f]Fern[/name_f]?

Thanks!

I think it’s totally okay! There’s more to sibling cohesion than length, and all of the examples you listed work just fine with [name_f]Fern[/name_f].

I think it could work! I know a number of siblings with short and long names together (think [name_f]Katie[/name_f] and [name_f]Arabella[/name_f], [name_f]Paige[/name_f] and Lilliana) - and it helps that [name_f]Fern[/name_f] is short and bold and would hold its own besides a longer name!

I don’t think any of those that you listed feel too much with [name_f]Fern[/name_f]!

[name_f]Fern[/name_f] is a lovely, adorable name!

The most important thing is that you absolutely love the name that you choose for her sibling. As a name nerd, I always love to see matching names. However, I also know that selecting a name is extremely difficult, and the perfect name for a child is the one that you admire unconditionally. The truth is that all siblings are individuals with different personalities and they will be independent adults one day.

I advice you to follow you heart and select your favorite name for Fern’s sister. I actually think that [name_f]Fern[/name_f] and [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] sound beautiful together. [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] also fits well because both have a vintage vibe.

Perhaps you could select a shorter middle name to balance the length difference between the names?

Another idea is selecting a longer name that is also nature themed! For example, [name_f]Fern[/name_f] and [name_f]Primrose[/name_f], [name_f]Fern[/name_f] and [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Fern[/name_f] and [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f], [name_f]Fern[/name_f] and [name_f]Emerald[/name_f], [name_f]Fern[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] or [name_f]Fern[/name_f] and [name_f]Marigold[/name_f].

I wouldn’t worry about it

I think it’s fine, even desirable to have a difference in syllable / letter count, but I’d personally want them unified in another way ie stylistically / vibe. For example from your list, I feel [name_f]Delaney[/name_f] and [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] are a bit of a mismatch too much for me, but I think [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] goes wonderfully. That’s very subjective though :woman_shrugging:

I don’t think [name_f]Fern[/name_f] needs to be paired with a short name—or any kind of name!

All of your example long names seem perfect and lovely with [name_f]Fern[/name_f] to me :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

[name_f]Sister[/name_f] sets I know IRL that feel mismatched in this same way (that I love):
[name_m]Royce[/name_m] and Sarah-Claire
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Lottie[/name_f] and [name_f]Annabella[/name_f]
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Serena[/name_f]
[name_f]Amy[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]

I don’t think so! Plus they all lend themselves well to nicknames and I think [name_f]Fern[/name_f] and [name_f]Della[/name_f] or [name_f]Fern[/name_f] and [name_f]Annie[/name_f] or [name_f]Fern[/name_f] and [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] are adorable together (or even [name_f]Fern[/name_f] and Della/Fern and [name_f]Lady[/name_f] for Adelaide). I am coming to realize that [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] nn [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] is not intuitive for most but it was introduced to me years ago so it just clicks in my head. [name_f]My[/name_f] brother has a 1-syllable name and two of my sisters have 3-syllable names, and none of us even noticed it? [name_f]Fern[/name_f] & [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] feels like the same thing to me.

Good luck!

Firstly [name_f]Fern[/name_f] is gorgeous :herb:

I do not think you should feel pigeonholed into naming a child a short name because her sister’s name is long. You should just use a name you love! Looking at the names you’ve got on your list I think stylistically [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] is such a brilliant fit with [name_f]Fern[/name_f]. Honestly [name_f]Fern[/name_f] + [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] are perfection.

[name_f]Fern[/name_f] is such a lovely name.

And I agree with others that her sister’s name could be any length you wish!

[name_f]Fern[/name_f] is a lovely name! Agree that longer name wouldn’t matter. [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] and [name_f]Fern[/name_f] sound really sweet together.

I think it’s fine as long as they go together-I like the idea of [name_f]Fern[/name_f] and [name_f]Delaney[/name_f]!
