Fiadh?

So we’re not expecting but I have a thing for Irish names, my all time favourite name is [name_f]Aoife[/name_f] which while difficult for anyone who doesn’t live in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] (we’re in Australia) or already know the name, I figure that if I have to spell my name ‘[name_f]Kathryn[/name_f]’ 3 times before people get it I think that correcting spelling/pronounciation is an acceptable sacrifice for an amazing name like [name_f]Aoife[/name_f].

I am amazed that I have only just discovered [name_u]Fiadh[/name_u], it fits right in with the popular [name_f]Sia[/name_f]/[name_f]Thea[/name_f]/[name_f]Mia[/name_f] and it has a really cool meaning. It would also work as an honour name for [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] (partner’s mother), and I think that his very Irish grandmother would love it.

What are your thoughts on the name?
Would you keep the Gaelic spelling or use [name_f]Fia[/name_f]? (even if it was a middle?)
Combo suggestions? [name_u]Fiadh[/name_u] would probably be a middle but I’m open to it as a first.

I’d definitely go with [name_f]Fia[/name_f] on this one. [name_f]Aoife[/name_f], while in my head I still say ahoh(ow)-ee-fuh, I think is difficult enough to make people go “how do I pronounce this?”, there just isn’t a natural pronunciation; with [name_u]Fiadh[/name_u] I believe people would assume it’s pretty straight forward and pronounced “fee-ad / fy-ad”.

Either spelling would work in my opinion, but I’m very used to Irish names. While in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] an Irish girl working at the airport was named [name_f]Fia[/name_f] (with that spelling). I think it’s a lovely name!

I feel that [name_f]Aoife[/name_f] and [name_u]Fiadh[/name_u] are a bit too rhyme-y as sisters.

I love the sound of Irish names even if the spelling isn’t intuitive but when I say this one it sounds like “fear” …maybe it’s my accent. It would make a lovely middle

I love [name_f]Aoife[/name_f] too! It’s sitting near the top of our agreed name list and we’re TTC for #2 right now. I’m finding myself a bit fixated on names with F’s too, and came across the Welsh [name_f]Ffion[/name_f] a few days ago (pronounced “[name_u]FEE[/name_u]-on” and meaning “foxglove”)! So you might like that one too. [name_u]Fiadh[/name_u] might be harder as a first name than [name_f]Aoife[/name_f] since it’s less well know, but I could be biased due to my familiarity with [name_f]Aoife[/name_f]. But if it’s in the first name slot, I’d probably spell it [name_f]Fia[/name_f], even though that’s less exciting. In the middle, go with [name_u]Fiadh[/name_u]!

[name_f]Fia[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Fia[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f]

[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_u]Fiadh[/name_u]
Romily [name_u]Fiadh[/name_u]

I love [name_u]Fiadh[/name_u]! One of my fave Irish names. I like it better with the traditional spelling, but [name_f]Fia[/name_f] is pretty and would definitely be easier for her.

I am in Australia, too. I’d definitely go for the Gaelic spelling of [name_u]Fiadh[/name_u]. My cousin is called Ceilidh ([name_f]Kayley[/name_f]) which is gorgeous. I grew up with Irish sisters called [name_f]Aoibhe[/name_f] (I like this alternate spelling for [name_f]Aoife[/name_f]), [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] and Sinéad. I wanted to call our almost-born daughter [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f] but with my married name (English) it doesn’t work so well. If I still had my Irish maiden name I would do it!

I love [name_u]Fiadh[/name_u]! It’s so sweet. If you’re using it as a first name outside of ireland, [name_f]Fia[/name_f] may be best, but if it’s a middle, [name_u]Fiadh[/name_u] would work fine

I agree!

I would use the traditional spelling. You can tell people to think of the dh as silent, or your daughter could use “[name_f]Fia[/name_f]” day to day if it’s easier, almost like it were a nickname, while preserving tradition in her formal name.

I think that the Gaelic spelling is beautiful!

I really like [name_u]Fiadh[/name_u] -it’s so sweet! And I actually got the pronunciation correct! I actually really like the [name_u]Fiadh[/name_u] spelling, it seems more complete than [name_f]Fia[/name_f]. Of course [name_f]Fia[/name_f] is easier, but if you don’t mind correcting people I say go ahead a be a trailblazer. There are only a handful of times you are being introduced by spelling alone (first day of school, doctors appointments, job interviews ect) otherwise people will just hear [name_f]Fia[/name_f], I think it’s worth the small hassle.

Thanks all! I’m hoping to convince my partner thatwe should use [name_u]Fiadh[/name_u] as a middle name if we ever have a daughter

100% use the Irish spelling for Irish names. Considering you’re in Australia which i believe has a very high population of Irish people anyway, alot of people might actually know the pronunciation. If you like [name_u]Fiadh[/name_u] and [name_f]Aoife[/name_f], then you might like [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f] (like the actress [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f] [name_m]Ronan[/name_m]), [name_f]Caoimhe[/name_f] (personal favourite), or [name_f]Sadhbh[/name_f]. These are all gorgeous names.

[name_u]Fiadh[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_u]Fiadh[/name_u] [name_u]Tate[/name_u]
[name_u]Fiadh[/name_u] [name_f]Sadie[/name_f]
[name_u]Fiadh[/name_u] [name_f]Noelle[/name_f]

I wouldnt go for a long name is using such a short first name
