DH and I seem pretty set on the name [name_m]Felix[/name_m], but we are having a hard time coming up with nicknames. We don’t like [name_f]Flick[/name_f], [name_u]Phil[/name_u]/Fel or [name_u]Fee[/name_u], and as we both like [name_u]Finn[/name_u], we would consider it as a nickname. Afterall, it sounds like Fel with a N instead of the L, no? Is it stupid? Is it too stretch? For me it is not, but when I talk about it, some people don’t get the connection between [name_m]Felix[/name_m] and [name_u]Finn[/name_u].
Edit: I know Felix is short buy we do want a nickname.
Do you think Phoenix, nn Finn, is more obvious? If yes, why is Finn okay with Phoenix and not with Felix?
Why is Fee okay for Felix and not Finn? What about Feen?
It doesn’t make sense to me, to be honest. If you want to call him [name_u]Finn[/name_u] day-to-day, then I would just name him [name_u]Finn[/name_u]. If you want to name him [name_m]Felix[/name_m] I would just call him [name_m]Felix[/name_m]. It’s only two syllables so I don’t think it needs a nickname. After he’s born you might end up calling him by a nickname that you didn’t initially plan to anyway.
I don’t really see the connection other than they start with the same letter. Maybe [name_m]Felix[/name_m] nn [name_m]Fox[/name_m] would work? I think part of why I don’t care for [name_m]Felix[/name_m] nn [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is because [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is a very common nickname for names that start with [name_u]Finn[/name_u] so to see it used for a name that doesn’t start with [name_u]Finn[/name_u] feels odd. Personally, I agree with the previous posters that I wouldn’t use a nickname for [name_m]Felix[/name_m]. Maybe just wait until he’s born and see what you end up calling him naturally.
I agree with the PPs sorry. I also came here to suggest [name_m]Fox[/name_m]. I know two Felixs - one goes by [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_u]Fee[/name_u] or Flix and the other usually goes by [name_m]Fox[/name_m], which I always loved (he’s about 35 now and it still works really well).
I don’t see why [name_m]Felix[/name_m] needs a nickname.
[name_u]Finn[/name_u] is too much of a stretch for [name_m]Felix[/name_m]. If you want [name_u]Finn[/name_u], why not [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] or [name_m]Phineas[/name_m]?
No, they’re too separate and dissimilar names. [name_m]Felix[/name_m] is short, it doesn’t warrant a nickname. If you’re really set with [name_m]Felix[/name_m], a pet name will come naturally when you get to know him
I was actually just wondering if [name_u]Finn[/name_u] could work for [name_m]Felix[/name_m]. We do want a nickname, even if the name is short, and we obviously want to avoid nicknames we don’t like.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] with the nn [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is more obvious? If yes, why is [name_u]Finn[/name_u] okay with [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and not with [name_m]Felix[/name_m]?
Why is [name_u]Fee[/name_u] okay for [name_m]Felix[/name_m] and not [name_u]Finn[/name_u]? What about Feen?
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] with the nn [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is more obvious? If yes, why is [name_u]Finn[/name_u] okay with [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and not with [name_m]Felix[/name_m]?
I don’t think [name_u]Finn[/name_u] works for [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u].
Why is [name_u]Fee[/name_u] okay for [name_m]Felix[/name_m] and not [name_u]Finn[/name_u]? What about Feen?
[name_u]Fee[/name_u] is okay (I don’t care for it, however) because [name_m]Felix[/name_m] is fee-licks. Feen works (again, I don’t care for it) because it plays off the first syllable of [name_m]Felix[/name_m]. [name_u]Finn[/name_u] doesn’t work because it’s already an established name completely unrelated to [name_m]Felix[/name_m] and it just doesn’t make sense with [name_m]Felix[/name_m].
[name_u]Finn[/name_u] is better for [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u], but still doesn’t connect for me. It has both the F and N sounds. [name_u]Fee[/name_u] is OK for [name_m]Felix[/name_m] bc its “[name_u]Fee[/name_u]-lix”. I don’t like [name_u]Fee[/name_u] of Feen though. If you want to call him [name_u]Finn[/name_u] so badly, just name him [name_u]Finn[/name_u].
I also do not get the connection to either [name_m]Pheonix[/name_m] or [name_m]Felix[/name_m] mostly because neither have the sound “[name_u]Finn[/name_u]” in them. [name_u]Fee[/name_u] and [name_u]Finn[/name_u] are totally
different sounds to me. [name_f]IMO[/name_f] to get the nn from a name it must have the sound in it. That being said my son is named [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] and we ended up
calling him [name_u]Finn[/name_u] from his middle name. You could always try for a middle with [name_u]Finn[/name_u] in it… Maybe [name_m]Felix[/name_m] GriFINN _____ or what about naming him [name_m]Finnick[/name_m]?
In the end it is your baby and you can call him whatever you wish
I don’t really think [name_u]Finn[/name_u] sounds great as a nn for [name_m]Felix[/name_m] or [name_m]Pheonix[/name_m]. [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is becoming more common as a stand alone name or so strongly connected with “[name_u]Finn[/name_u]” started names that it just seems off for [name_m]Felix[/name_m]. Sort of like you couldn’t choose between the two so you just tried to use both even though they don’t necessarily connect.
Personally I don’t like [name_u]Fee[/name_u] or Feen as nicknames but I’m not a huge nickname person, especially with short names like [name_m]Felix[/name_m]. Maybe you can use the middle name in combination with [name_m]Felix[/name_m] to come up with a nickname?
Obviously you can call your kid [name_u]Finn[/name_u] as a nickname if you want, just my 2 cents in the topic. A lot of times I think the nickname you actually end up calling your kid isn’t even directly related to the name and isn’t the pre-chosen nickname anyway. [name_m]Just[/name_m] do what feels right for you and what comes naturally
I agree with every single poster on this thread, that [name_u]Finn[/name_u] doesn’t make sense as a short form for [name_m]Felix[/name_m]. They are just two completely different names. I don’t think [name_u]Finn[/name_u] works for [name_m]Pheonix[/name_m] either, though at least it has an ‘n’ in it so it’s a little better.
[name_u]Finn[/name_u] is a name in its own right. If you want to call him [name_u]Finn[/name_u], name him [name_u]Finn[/name_u]. It’s not a nickname for [name_m]Felix[/name_m] or [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u].
Sorry, I think it would just be confusing to meet a child called [name_u]Finn[/name_u] short for [name_m]Felix[/name_m].
Both names are very handsome, and you can feel great about choosing one or the other. Plus if you really like them both, [name_u]Finn[/name_u] would make a great little brother for [name_m]Felix[/name_m]!
The best nicknames for [name_m]Felix[/name_m] are [name_m]Fox[/name_m] & [name_f]Flick[/name_f].
If you really can’t use [name_m]Felix[/name_m] without a nickname, try some of these F names with natural shorter forms:
Forrest nn Forrie/ Frost
Frederick nn Freddie
Fergus nn Fergie /Gus
[name_m]Fletcher[/name_m] nn [name_m]Fletch[/name_m]
Flynley nn [name_u]Flynn[/name_u]
[name_m]Phillip[/name_m] nn Fip/ [name_u]Flip[/name_u]
[name_u]Francis[/name_u] nn [name_u]Fran[/name_u]/[name_m]Frank[/name_m]
I think everyone has their own tastes and opinions on this and honestly you should do whatever YOU like and think works.
I personally would not use any nn for [name_m]Felix[/name_m]. I think [name_m]Felix[/name_m] is a fairly short name and like it as is.
If you really like the name [name_u]Finn[/name_u], I would just use the name [name_u]Finn[/name_u] it a name that was a little longer than [name_m]Felix[/name_m] where using a nn such as [name_u]Finn[/name_u] made more sense. [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] would work if you wanted a less obvious [name_u]Finn[/name_u]-ish name.
I’m the type of person who always found it strange to call people [name_m]Dick[/name_m] when their name was [name_m]Richard[/name_m]; call people [name_m]Bill[/name_m] when their name was [name_m]Will[/name_m]; and I’m sure there’s other ones out there.
But that’s just me and my thoughts. You may totally think [name_u]Finn[/name_u] works as a nn for [name_m]Felix[/name_m]. Or maybe you really like [name_m]Felix[/name_m] as a first name but want to call him [name_u]Finn[/name_u]. There’s some people that name their child a certain name for a reason but choose to call them by their middle name. Maybe your situation is similar.
