So… [name]One[/name] boys name on my list that is causing me confusion is the [name]Finn[/name]/finnigan/[name]Finnegan[/name]/iggy conundrum… I’m hoping you guys can help!
Basically I have always loved the baby name [name]Finn[/name] and seeing as I have Gaelic roots and a surfer husband it seemed pretty perfect! But one of my friends (not so close that its a total no go now but close enough for it to be a little ‘uncomfortable’ ut a friend in my extended circle has recently named her baby [name]Finn[/name]…
So I then thought maybe [name]Finnegan[/name] nn [name]Finn[/name]. If needs be the babies can be distinguished we can use nn [name]Finn[/name] when not socialising in that circle and added bonus that [name]Egan[/name] is a special family name so I feel like I’m honouring that side of the family! Plus [name]Finnegan[/name] would give a slightly more formal option if he wants it later!
But then to throw another spanner in the works…I have also a huge crush on nn’s ziggy and iggy… I have options on my long list including
[name]Sigmund[/name] nn ziggi (not sure if I’m brave enough to use this
[name]Santiago[/name] (bit if a stretch to get iggi/ziggi plus not even a hint of a link to Spain or Latin [name]America[/name] in our blood though I do love the name)
[name]Indigo[/name] nn iggy… [name]Love[/name] this on someone elses child know I’d NEVER use it!
[name]Viggo[/name] ( probably the only one I would seriously consider really using!
Then it dawned on me that [name]Finnigan[/name] would also be a perfectly legit way to get [name]Iggy[/name] AND [name]Finn[/name]!!! But then really we only need one nn I love… Or maybe iggy when hes really little and when we’re socialising with this friend and [name]Finn[/name] as he gets older unless he wants to be a rock star …If we went with [name]Finnigan[/name] spelling then I would lose connection to family name [name]Egan[/name]! Could iggy work as nn for [name]Finnegan[/name] too?!
Any thoughts on the situation as a whole or in the other names? Should I just let go of Finn altogether and consider Viggo? Love this too!
Please Help!!!
Yes, I think that [name]Finnegan[/name] still works with nn [name]Iggy[/name]. I feel that nicknames are mostly verbal; if someone heard you call your son “[name]Iggy[/name],” and asked what his full name is, most people would hear [name]Iggy[/name] within [name]Finnegan[/name] just fine. When writing his name down on quizzes in class or paperwork as an adult (if he still goes by [name]Iggy[/name]), it would be a matter of how formal the assignment and his preferences for which name he wants to write, but I doubt anyone seeing [name]Iggy[/name] written would know (or need to know) his longer name, and anyone reading the longer name would likely have little guess about what he’s called for short. I think I worded that confusingly; am I making sense, haha?
It sounds to me like [name]Finnegan[/name] ticks all the boxes. I think it’s a winner.
Since [name]Finnegan[/name] and [name]Finnigan[/name] are pronounced exactly the same I think [name]Iggy[/name] could work as a nickname for [name]Finnegan[/name] - and you still get the family connection - however in my experience children rarely get more than one nickname. I also really like [name]Sigmund[/name] - I see no reason to why this shouldn’t be a legit option
I not a fan of [name]Finnigan[/name] because it just sounds like an old man name. [name]Finn[/name] is lovely but I prefer [name]Finlay[/name]/[name]Findlay[/name]/[name]Finley[/name] to just [name]Finn[/name].
Thanks guys Anyone else have an thoughts? On [name]Finnegan[/name] vs [name]Finnigan[/name] nn iggy? Or on sigmund nn ziggy or [name]Viggo[/name] nn iggy?
[name]Both[/name] our your preferred nns, [name]Iggy[/name] and [name]Finn[/name], work with [name]Finnegan[/name]. I actually think it’s a very clever idea. I definitely think people can have more than one nn.
I don’t like [name]Sigmund[/name] or [name]Viggo[/name] very much.
[name]Finnegan[/name] is a fantastic name. It has a rare combination of gravitas and cool. I think you could use either [name]Finn[/name] or [name]Iggy[/name] as a nickname. [name]Iggy[/name] is also a nn option for an [name]Ignatius[/name].
You’re over-thinking it and worrying too much about it. You can definitely use the nickname [name]Iggy[/name], even with the [name]Finnegan[/name] spelling! [name]Finnegan[/name] nn [name]Finn[/name] or [name]Iggy[/name] is great! Go for it.
I really like [name]Finnegan[/name]/[name]Finnigan[/name] and think [name]Iggy[/name] works and is a cute nn! Another idea is [name]Isaac[/name] nn [name]Iggy[/name] or [name]Ziggy[/name]. I too love those nns and planned on using them for my son [name]Isaac[/name] but his 2 year old sister starting calling him [name]Izzy[/name] after he was born so so far he is [name]Izzy[/name] or Iz. You could also uze [name]Zigmund[/name] instead of [name]Sigmund[/name] but [name]Iggy[/name]/[name]Ziggy[/name] works for [name]Sigmund[/name] too!
And p.s. I really like the name [name]Finn[/name] and wanted to use it at one time too but I do know of 3 baby Finns so that turned me off a little bit - if you do use it you may want to go for the longer versions. Another idea I had to get to [name]Finn[/name] is using [name]Griffin[/name] although I ended up leaning toward liking [name]Griff[/name]/[name]Griffy[/name] better as a nn and then the baby just didn’t feel like that either, lol.
[name]Finnegan[/name] is awesome. I love [name]Finn[/name] and I like [name]Egan[/name]. [name]Iggy[/name] isn’t my style, but it’s cute and is totally valid from [name]Finnegan[/name].
[name]Sigmund[/name] isn’t my style, and I really think you should look no further than [name]Finnegan[/name] if it’s so perfect.
Yeah I think any of your NN options work, and having the long form of [name]Finnegan[/name] is nice because then he can have a lot of NN options, as opposed to [name]Finn[/name], which just has [name]Finn[/name]. Besides, as you get to know your baby’s personality, you might find that he embodies a certain NN that you had not anticipated. I would just maybe talk to your friend and let her know that you are considering the name [name]Finnegan[/name], but that he would go by [name]Egan[/name] to avoid confusion. It probably wouldn’t be a big deal, but if she is a close enough of a friend that you want to avoid the original [name]Finn[/name], then she’s probably a close enough of a friend that you want to avoid any concern or resentment.
I much prefer [name]Finnegan[/name] over your other choice. I very much associate [name]Sigmund[/name] with Freud and his theories…not my cup of tea. I like [name]Viggo[/name] better, but it feels like it’s trying a little to hard ([name]IMO[/name]; I know other Berries like and have used it).
