Finnish Names That Could Work in US

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all! I’ve been drawn to Finnish names recently (or rather, names that are used commonly in Finland) and would like your suggestions for both boys and girl names! They have to wear well and be easy enough to pronounce in the US.

I have Finnish heritage and have always felt very drawn to the country.

[name_f]My[/name_f] fave girl names that are common in Finland right now are [name_f]Lumi[/name_f] & [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] (wouldn’t that make a darling twin set!:smiling_face_with_three_hearts:)

Thank you for your help!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! I’m Finnish and my wife is American, so I’ve given this question a lot of thought! Many of these are commonly used in Finland rather than specifically of Finnish origin - I’ll add a little :finland: next to the names that are as Finnish as you can get / variations of international names just used in Finland.

[name_m]Otso[/name_m] :finland:
[name_m]Miro[/name_m]
[name_m]Emil[/name_m], [name_m]Eemil[/name_m]
[name_m]Lukas[/name_m], [name_m]Luka[/name_m]
[name_m]Edvin[/name_m], [name_m]Edwin[/name_m]
[name_m]Onni[/name_m] :finland:
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_m]Leo[/name_m], [name_m]Leon[/name_m]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_m]Aatos[/name_m] :finland:
[name_m]Armas[/name_m] :finland:
[name_m]Noel[/name_m]
[name_m]Kasper[/name_m]
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m]
[name_m]Anton[/name_m]
[name_m]Rasmus[/name_m]
[name_m]Ivo[/name_m]
[name_m]Mikael[/name_m], [name_f]Mika[/name_f]
[name_m]Valter[/name_m]
[name_f]Tommi[/name_f], [name_m]Tomi[/name_m]
[name_m]Toivo[/name_m] :finland:
Konsta :finland:
[name_m]Aleksander[/name_m], Aleksanteri, Santeri (:finland: for Santeri / Aleksanteri)
[name_m]Matias[/name_m]

[name_f]Lilja[/name_f] :finland:
[name_f]Linnea[/name_f]
[name_f]Helmi[/name_f] :finland:
[name_f]Aino[/name_f] :finland:
[name_f]Hilma[/name_f]
[name_f]Hilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Frida[/name_f]
Hilja :finland:
[name_f]Venla[/name_f] :finland:
[name_f]Livia[/name_f]
[name_f]Alma[/name_f]
[name_f]Elli[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Ellen[/name_f]
[name_f]Ilona[/name_f]
[name_f]Vivian[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f], [name_f]Aura[/name_f], [name_f]Auri[/name_f]
[name_f]Minea[/name_f]
[name_f]Alina[/name_f]
[name_f]Aleksandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Saimi[/name_f], [name_f]Saima[/name_f] :finland:
[name_m]Inari[/name_m] :finland:
[name_f]Alisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Oona[/name_f]
[name_f]Salla[/name_f] :finland:
[name_f]Erika[/name_f]
[name_f]Inka[/name_f] :finland:
[name_f]Lovisa[/name_f]
Helvi :finland:
[name_f]Meri[/name_f] :finland:
[name_f]Lilli[/name_f] :finland:

The pronunciation of most of these isn’t exactly intuitive to an [name_f]English[/name_f] speaker but they’re ones at least my in-laws could easily learn to pronounce with a little practice!

Also I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the concept of name days, but Finland has a name day calendar which you can use as a source of names that are in common usage here. :slightly_smiling_face:
