first baby girl name

My husband and I are expecting our first baby, a girl, in [name]December[/name] (the 26th). Our top name choices right now are:

[name]Natalie[/name]
[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Alexandra[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name]

[name]Julia[/name] is the front-runner, with [name]Natalie[/name] in second. [name]Natalie[/name] is nice because it will be a [name]Christmas[/name]-time baby (though we’re not christian), and it honors my husband’s aunt, his godmother, who died a couple months ago and was named [name]Nettie[/name]. But for some reason I don’t “love” [name]Natalie[/name] as a name. Could be convinced.

[name]Alexandra[/name] is pretty and goes well with our last name (begins with “G”) but it’s a mouthful, and I’m sure we’d call her [name]Alex[/name].

I love [name]Josephine[/name], but I get mixed reactions to it, though seems to be popular on these boards. [name]Josie[/name] would be the nn, but I also think [name]Posy[/name] is cute (my husband doesn’t!).

What are some good middle names with [name]Julia[/name]? I’m [name]Caroline[/name], so that’s out. Would love an “N” middle name, but can’t think of a good one besides [name]Natalie[/name], and not sure [name]Julia[/name] [name]Natalie[/name] works.

Thanks!

[name]Natalie[/name] - has been uber popular lately, just FYI. Maybe [name]Natasha[/name]?
[name]Julia[/name] - It’s a safe choice.
[name]Alexandra[/name] - nicknames other than [name]Alex[/name]: [name]Lexi[/name], [name]Ally[/name]. Personally, I like “[name]Alexa[/name]” much better!
[name]Josephine[/name] - it’s definitely very “[name]Little[/name] Women”, but who says that can’t be charming? And “[name]Josey[/name]” is very cute.

I like [name]Naomi[/name] for a middle name, but not with [name]Julia[/name] (maybe with [name]Brooklyn[/name] or [name]Alexa[/name]). There aren’t very many cute middle names that start with N. [name]Nicole[/name] is way over-used, I think. I do like [name]Nella[/name], but it doesn’t really have a meaning, and again, doesn’t go with [name]Julia[/name].

[name]Etta[/name] would be cute, I think. Sounds more like [name]Netty[/name]. More traditionally, [name]Annette[/name].

Like I said, I really like the name [name]Alexa[/name]. And it’s shorter, like you wanted.

Other ideas: [name]Adeline[/name] ([name]Addie[/name]), [name]Emmeline[/name], [name]Ainsley[/name], [name]Danika[/name], [name]Daphne[/name]

[name]Julia[/name] [name]Lynne[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] Amyris
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Paisley[/name]

[name]Natalie[/name] - love even though it has been so popular
[name]Julia[/name] - love!
[name]Alexandra[/name] - so pretty, but so popular. [name]Love[/name] nn [name]Zandie[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] - love it, love [name]Josie[/name]

[name]Julia[/name] is the front-runner, with [name]Natalie[/name] in second. [name]Natalie[/name] is nice because it will be a [name]Christmas[/name]-time baby (though we’re not christian), and it honors my husband’s aunt, his godmother, who died a couple months ago and was named [name]Nettie[/name]. But for some reason I don’t “love” [name]Natalie[/name] as a name. Could be convinced.

[name]Natalia[/name] nn [name]Talia[/name], [name]Tallie[/name]

I like [name]Josie[/name] as a nn for [name]Josephine[/name] more than [name]Posey[/name]. Also love [name]Fina[/name].

What are some good middle names with [name]Julia[/name]? I’m [name]Caroline[/name], so that’s out. Would love an “N” middle name, but can’t think of a good one besides [name]Natalie[/name], and not sure [name]Julia[/name] [name]Natalie[/name] works.

[name]Julia[/name] [name]Noel[/name] - [name]Christmas[/name] theme
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Rene[/name]
My sister named her daughter [name]Julia[/name] [name]Rebecca[/name]. Last name is one syllable so it works.
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Celeste[/name] (I am stuck on [name]Celeste[/name])
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Eden[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Willow[/name] - so pretty!*
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Claire[/name] - love!*
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Pauline[/name] ( I think [name]Pauline[/name] will come back in style soon, but right now it’s out.)
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Irene[/name] ([name]Irene[/name] means “peace”
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Maude[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Maeve[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Neve[/name] ([name]Neve[/name] means “snow”)
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Marin[/name] ( I pronounce it [name]MARE[/name]-in)*
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Louise[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Frances[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Delphine[/name]*
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Esme[/name]
Out there ideas:
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Claudine[/name]*
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Cosette[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Georgine[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Francine[/name]

*my favorites on my list

Thanks. I really love [name]Josephine[/name]… but I get such mixed reactions to it. I know it’s not a favorite of my parents or husband, though husband does like it and would do it. What do you think? Is it becoming trendy? I don’t know anyone personally who has named their daughter [name]Josephine[/name], but I can see it starting to become popular. Maybe [name]Julia[/name] is more classic and I won’t grow tired of it, which I’m afraid a little of with [name]Josephine[/name]. OTOH, [name]Julia[/name] is less interesting.

For mn’s, I would do [name]Julia[/name] [name]Clare[/name]. I think we prefer spelling without “i.” And [name]Pauline[/name] is my m-i-l’s name!

[name]Natalie[/name]: I’m personally not a [name]Natalie[/name] fan, and as others have mentioned, it’s very popular now… I really love the [name]Natasha[/name] suggestion…

[name]Julia[/name]: Despite its popularity (just type any name into the “Check out a name” box on the left, and the popularity ranking will be listed), I do love [name]Julia[/name], and the less popular [name]Juliet[/name] even more.

[name]Alexandra[/name]: Due to the trendy [name]Alexis[/name] and other [name]Alex[/name]- names for girls, [name]Alexandra[/name] has that trendy feel to me now. I thought I’d mention that [name]Alex[/name] G____ is hard for me to say (the x and the G clash).

[name]Josephine[/name]: I love the classic/vintage [name]Josephine[/name] and the class and confidence it projects. I think [name]Josie[/name] is a really cute nickname, too!

From your list, [name]Julia[/name] and [name]Josephine[/name] are my favorites. If popularity is an issue for you, I’d go with [name]Juliet[/name] instead of [name]Julia[/name].

[name]Julia[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Blythe[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Clementine[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Catherine[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Frances[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Kate[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Nell[/name] (but it sounds like [name]Julie[/name] Anelle)
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Rosalie[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Simone[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Violet[/name]

[name]Juliet[/name] [name]Blythe[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name] [name]Camille[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name] [name]Delphine[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name] [name]Louise[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name] [name]Marielle[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name] [name]Noelle[/name] (gives you your N name…)
[name]Juliet[/name] [name]Rosalie[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name] [name]Simone[/name]

When I say [name]Julia[/name] [name]Claire[/name] out loud, I hear [name]Julie[/name] Eclair, like the dessert, because the a from [name]Julia[/name] attaches to [name]Claire[/name]. It may just be me, though!

Good luck!

OMG, [name]Julie[/name] Eclair is too funny! I won’t be able to get that out of my head now. What about [name]Julia[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name]?

Oh, I think [name]Julia[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] is so, so pretty! (I love [name]Caroline[/name], by the way…)

Thanks! I didn’t like [name]Caroline[/name] when I was growing up but really appreciate it now. And my middle name is [name]Jill[/name]

[name]Julia[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] is so pretty…TOO pretty? I love something like [name]Julia[/name] [name]Frances[/name], which is less “pretty,” but a good friend just used [name]Frances[/name] as mn, and is calling her daughter [name]Frances[/name].

[name]Jill[/name], you said you don’t love [name]Natalie[/name], but do you think [name]Natalie[/name] [name]Julia[/name] works?

Other names I love:

[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Willa[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Clara[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Anne[/name]
[name]Natalie[/name] [name]Jane[/name]
[name]Natalie[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Violet[/name] (husband doesn’t like [name]Violet[/name])

Okay. You’re [name]Caroline[/name] and I’m [name]Jill[/name], which makes me quite jealous. I [name]LOVE[/name] your name!!! ([name]Julia[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] is actually my favroite [name]Julia[/name] combo, by the way.)

I don’t think [name]Julia[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] is too, too pretty. I think it’s a gorgeous classic name. I could see how a name like [name]Arabella[/name] [name]Camille[/name] could be too frilly, but for me, [name]Julia[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] is perfect: classic, feminine, strong, and elegant. You can frump it up with, say, [name]Julia[/name] [name]Maude[/name] (although I love [name]Maude[/name]) or [name]Julia[/name] [name]Mabel[/name] (I like [name]Mabel[/name], too), but I personally love [name]Julia[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name]. (It’s your baby, though, so do what’s right for you!)

Your friend doesn’t own [name]Frances[/name], and if you love [name]Julia[/name] [name]Frances[/name], I think you should use it! It’s not as though [name]Frances[/name] will be her first name… I think [name]Julia[/name] [name]Frances[/name] is really sweet.

For me, [name]Natalie[/name] [name]Julia[/name] isn’t the best combo, but it’s not horrible or anything. It just doesn’t flow to me, but that’s just me.

Other names I love:

[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Willa[/name]: I so love [name]Willa[/name]! I think [name]Willa[/name] [name]Josephine[/name] sounds really pretty, too…

[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Clara[/name]: I really like [name]Clara[/name], too, and love [name]Clara[/name] [name]Josephine[/name]

[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Anne[/name]: I love [name]Anne[/name], but this combo is just so-so for me. What about [name]Anna[/name] [name]Josephine[/name]?

[name]Natalie[/name] [name]Jane[/name]: I think this is really pretty…

[name]Natalie[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name]: I like this one, too, but really love [name]Natalie[/name] [name]Jane[/name]

[name]Julia[/name] [name]Violet[/name] (husband doesn’t like [name]Violet[/name]): I love it!

What about [name]Nora[/name] [name]Josephine[/name]? I think [name]Nora[/name] is a great N name, and it’s sensible like [name]Frances[/name].

[name]Noelle[/name] also means [name]Christmas[/name], and it’s an n name. You could do [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Noelle[/name], [name]Alexa[/name] [name]Noelle[/name], etc.

Thanks for all your replies! We still have a long time to think about it so I’m sure I’ll be back here with more ideas soon!

So my husband and I seem to be focused on [name]Julia[/name]. We both love [name]Julia[/name], and [name]Julia[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] ( I also like [name]Julia[/name] [name]Violet[/name], [name]Julia[/name] [name]Francine[/name]–thanks, [name]Jill[/name] and [name]Susan[/name]!). But there are so many beautiful names out there and I feel it’s too early in the pregnancy to have made a final decision (I’m only 14 weeks). Looking for more inspiration, new name ideas to try out.

I still love [name]Josephine[/name] but for some reason it doesn’t feel natural to us to use that name. [name]Do[/name] you think a name should feel natural right away, or would you name your daughter a name that you love, and assume it will just feel right? I guess part of it is waiting until she’s born, then seeing what suits her.

What about [name]Josephine[/name] as a mn? What do you suggest as a first name for [name]Josephine[/name]? Our last name is 2 syllables and begins with a hard “G.”

Thanks!

I’m [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Elise[/name], but have always gone by [name]Josie[/name].
I think it’s a wonderful name :).
Unbiased, of course…

I like [name]Josephine[/name] the best

[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Clara[/name] is pretty

[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Lucille[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Lauren[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Rosa[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Daisy[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Alice[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Carmel[/name]

http://babynamelover.wordpress.com/

These are pretty combos, but what about [name]Josephine[/name] as a middle name?

[name]Josie[/name], always nice to hear from a [name]Josephine[/name] who likes her name! [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Elise[/name] is beautiful–had thought of it too!

Thank you both!

I am a “[name]Julia[/name]” and have always loved my name, including my middle name, which is [name]Rachel[/name].

Ok, vote on these [name]Julia[/name] combos, please! (Last name is two syllables, begins with hard “G”):

[name]Julia[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Margaret[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Violet[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Clare[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Natalie[/name]

Thanks!

What pretty combos!

[name]Julia[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name]: I think this is gorgeous.

[name]Julia[/name] [name]Margaret[/name]: I love the combo, but a last name beginning with a hard G, it sounds pretty G-heavy to me.

[name]Julia[/name] [name]Violet[/name]: I love this!

[name]Julia[/name] [name]Clare[/name]: I’m going to pass on this one, because when I say it out loud, I hear [name]Julie[/name] Eclair (the dessert). I may be the only one who hears this, though, because I see people liking [name]Claire[/name] after a-ending names all the time.

[name]Julia[/name] [name]Natalie[/name]: I don’t think this is terrible, but I prefer [name]Julia[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] and [name]Julia[/name] [name]Violet[/name].

I’m voting for [name]Julia[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] or [name]Julia[/name] [name]Violet[/name]. (I love [name]Margaret[/name], too, but not with you last name.)

Good luck!

Please ignore this…I can’t delete it.

[name]Julia[/name] [name]Violet[/name]! So pretty! I also really like [name]Julia[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name]. And I’m with [name]Jill[/name] on the [name]Julie[/name] Eclair thing, though I don’t think many people will notice that, and it is very pretty.
