First name chosen, on to middle name!

[name]Hi[/name] Everyone,

We are excited for our upcoming baby boy #2 in [name]April[/name], brother to [name]Arthur[/name] [name]Weyland[/name] (last name is a Mc). They will be 17 months apart.

I went name-crazy a couple weeks ago (at 5 months pregnant) and persisted until my husband and I agreed on a first name. Finally thought of one to which his response was “that is a good name” and we’ve both liked it since: [name]Lachlan[/name]. I like that it’s origin is Scottish but it’s meaning is “viking” or someone who came from the land of the lochs, which evokes romantic imagery of fjords and new lands and vikings, etc. : ) Our known heritage is a mix of Scottish, English, Irish… Cree, Spanish. We live in [name]Canada[/name]. The name [name]Lachlan[/name] is popular in Australia but not so much on this continent which suits me fine.

Anyhow, now I’d like to ponder middle names. The one that seemed promising and flowed was “[name]Ulysses[/name]”–one of my husband’s favourites that I can certainly handle as a middle name. [name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Ulysses[/name] Mc- -. So cute and would age well. But then I discovered that [name]Ulysses[/name] comes from [name]Odysseus[/name], which means “to hate”! So now I am thinking, oh that’s nice, your name is “invading Viking who hates you”… while your brother’s name means romantic chivalrous knight hero, and master craftsman sword-maker. I basically can’t do a name that means “to hate”!

I like all sorts of names, but tend towards classic (I would even go for [name]George[/name], [name]Stanley[/name], [name]Robert[/name], [name]David[/name], [name]Charles[/name]… all family names, all vetoed!). My dislikes are trendy names, made-up names, and ones that stray too far for me and sound discordant as a result. Hubby is sensitive to/likes how the name sounds (to him), and it’s uniqueness. He likes [name]Thaddeus[/name], [name]Emmett[/name], [name]Xerxes[/name], [name]Atticus[/name], [name]Atlas[/name]. We both like [name]Norman[/name], and it’s a family name, but the person was not so nice, and my FIL would not appreciate the association. A previous choice for first name that both liked was [name]Ivan[/name] (I have a secret love of Russian names like [name]Dmitri[/name], [name]Vladimir[/name], [name]Stanislav[/name], but won’t venture too far from our own heritage and social context because I’m a name prude!!!) [name]Ivan[/name] is common in English-speaking context and means [name]John[/name] which is a family name in a good way, so it worked for me. But ends in -an so don’t want to pair with [name]Lachlan[/name].

Looking for your ideas on middle names for [name]Lachlan[/name] : )

[name]Lachlan[/name] is my favorite boys name, I’m in [name]Canada[/name] too! I love that it’s very uncommon here but not unknown. Our combination is [name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Alexander[/name], or maybe [name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Xavier[/name].
I love the idea of [name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Ulysses[/name], and I think you are reading too much into the [name]Odysseus[/name] thing!!! I’m not sure exactly where you are getting your name meanings, but I hear behindthename.com is supposed to be one of the most reputable. Your take on [name]Ulysses[/name] seems to be correct, but what you say [name]Lachlan[/name] means, isn’t what I have read in lots of other places. That all being said, unless your child ends up being a major name nerd too, they probably won’t know, or so much care what their name means. But if you hate it, that matters.

I like your DH’s ideas of [name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Atlas[/name], and [name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Atticus[/name]. What about [name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Ian[/name], which is close to [name]Ivan[/name], but perhaps still too rhymey?

Thanks for feedback, kibby! Yes, I tend to read into things more than is necessary which I probably did with the Viking association, but the “to hate” one is just too problematic I think for the otherwise awesome [name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Ulysses[/name].

[name]Glad[/name] to hear you love the first name, and like your suggestion (or rather, your own choice!!!) of [name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] is nice. And [name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Atticus[/name], perhaps. [name]Alexander[/name] is husband’s middle name so… I may have to snitch it from you… chances are they will never meet

Cool, thanks, and [name]Happy[/name] [name]New[/name] Year from a fellow Canuck : )

[name]Happy[/name] [name]New[/name] Year to you too!!!

Another berry recently was considering [name]Alexander[/name] [name]Lachlan[/name], but I think she ended up with something different due to a change in family circumstances (I think!) If you love [name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] please feel free to snitch it away, it’s a lovely name, [name]Lachlan[/name] is underused in [name]Canada[/name] and [name]Alexander[/name] is a solid, strong boys name!

I really like [name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Ulysses[/name]! I wish I could help you see past the ‘to hate’ but I understand, you don’t want to associate your son with ‘hate’ or hating anything!!

I agree, [name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] and [name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Atlas[/name] are great  I also like [name]Ivo[/name] and [name]Iver[/name] - variations of [name]Ivan[/name].

[name]Ulysses[/name] brings to mind [name]Lysander[/name] and [name]Oceanus[/name], but [name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Lysander[/name] may be a little too alliterative for your taste.

I like [name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Atlas[/name] very much!

If you are going off of meaning, here are some to consider:

[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Alistair[/name] (defending men) [name]Alistair[/name] is Scottish version of [name]Alexander[/name]. It suits [name]Lachlan[/name] better than [name]Alexander[/name] in my opinion.
[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Callum[/name] (dove)
[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Eric[/name] (eternal ruler)
[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Emrys[/name] (immortal one) magic name of [name]Merlin[/name]
[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Evander[/name] (good man)
[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Felix[/name] (happy, fortunate)
[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Finn[/name] (white, fair)
[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Keane[/name] (ancient) original form is “[name]Cian[/name]”
[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Magnus[/name] (greatest)
[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Merlin[/name] (sea fortress)
[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Murray[/name] (settlement by the sea)
[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Niven[/name] (little saint)
Lachen [name]Oberon[/name] (noble, bearlike) meaning matches Arthurs; can also be spelled [name]Auberon[/name]
[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Ossian[/name] (little dear) Old Irish
[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Rafferty[/name] (floodtide, abundance, prosperity)
[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Rhett[/name] (advice)
[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Rory[/name] (red king)
[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Rowan[/name] (little redhead)
[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Uilleam[/name] (resolute protection) Scottish variation of [name]William[/name]
[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Victor[/name] (victorious)

Apologize for the [name]Merlin[/name] names, I saw [name]Arthur[/name] and I couldn’t resist. I also saw the last episode of the series and still think about it.

Anyway, best of luck in naming your son and [name]Arthur[/name] [name]Weyland[/name] is very [name]LOVELY[/name]!!!

oooo I like some of those! In a way the mn is easier because you can stop focusing on whether it is absolutely wearable.

[name]Uilleam[/name] is cool… OO-liam is pronunciation I take it.

Yeah, lots of those are good!!! Especially Emrys, Evander, Oberon/Auberon, and Rafferty.

I’ll tell hubby that [name]Atlas[/name] is getting votes.

thanks!
