First name shorter than the middle name

What do you think about some names combination where first name is shorter than the middle one… I see many prefer longer first and shorter middle…

Like [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Mariella[/name_f] or [name_f]Eve[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]… (These names are just examples, for my real options, just check my signature.)

I know excactly what you mean.

I actually prefer short firsts and longer middles. A few I like are [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] and [name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f].

But I’ve had family members tell me it sounds weird to them when the middle is longer than the first name, but I personally see nothing wrong with it.

As long as you love the names

You’re overthinking…it doesn’t matter in the least!

I tend to prefer short firsts as well. Or at least names that can be easily shortened. It’s hard to imagine calling someone [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] every day of their life. I know lots of people do it, it’s just different from how my family works.
And since the middle is the place to play and use beautiful things you wouldn’t normally use, I’m all for long middles.

There are only a handful of names over 2 syllables that I really love.

[name_f]My[/name_f] own name falls in to the category of long first and short middle, but I think short first, long middle names have a sort of elegance to them, like [name_f]Belle[/name_f] [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] and [name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_f]Melisande[/name_f] from your signature. [name_m]Both[/name_m] are absolutely beautiful.

I don’t think it matters. I consider the sound and the flow to be more important.

I actually like a longer middle paired with a short first name. I think the flow is nicer than a short first name with a short middle. I also like long first names with a short middle, but I think it all depends on what you want to use as a first name and then go from there.

I think it’s completely fine. It is kind of harder to make combos that flow well when the first name is shortest, but still very possible.

I think a lot of people have a preference for short (sometimes almost “filler”) middle names - [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_u]Lee[/name_u], [name_f]Anne[/name_f], [name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Beth[/name_f], etc.
I think it can go either way. I tend to prefer one name be longer and the other short, whichever is which.
On a slightly different note, I also like a difference in syllabic emphasis of each name. For example, [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Nicole[/name_f] (with the emphasis on the first syllable in the first name and on the second in the second name) is more appealing to me than [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Hailey[/name_f] (which both have the emphasis on the first syllable.

I really like the short/long flow. For example, I love [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]

I think regardless of the length of the names, it just depends on whether the names work together.

Combinations I like;
[name_f]Melody[/name_f] [name_f]Elysia[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f] [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f]
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m] [name_u]Oberon[/name_u]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]

Combinations I dislike;
[name_f]Freya[/name_f] [name_f]Romilly[/name_f]
[name_f]Belle[/name_f] [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f]
[name_f]Eve[/name_f] Melisand
[name_m]Leon[/name_m] [name_m]Percival[/name_m]
[name_u]Tristan[/name_u] Wulfric
[name_u]Finn[/name_u] Beowolf

I have a four letter first name and a seven letter middle name. I love my first name and would not want it relegated to the middle spot. As a middle it does look like a filler name but it has more dignity and feels more creative as a first.

[name_f]My[/name_f] children [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] and [name_u]Theo[/name_u] have longer middle names too.

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband is the only one who has a long first name and a short middle. He never uses his first name and goes by a nickname instead. He was very specific about naming our children what they would be called. We didn’t name our son [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] because what we wanted to get at was [name_u]Theo[/name_u]. We didn’t name our daughter [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] because we wanted [name_f]Lilia[/name_f].

Also, our last name happens to be long, so the combination of a short first name with a longer last name feels ideal to us. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if the middle names are long-ish, they don’t use them on a regular basis.

I think it’s fine. Personally I like longer firsts, in general, but actually two long names can be a bit overwhelming. A short first and long middle (or vice versa), can balance it out a bit.

I’ve never really thought about it, I focus more the names I like and the flow of the names. But looking at my favourite name sets, it seems I favour longer middle names.
Example:
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]

I have a one syllable first name that is often one of the “filler” middles. It is along the lines of: [name_f]Anne[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f] etc. [name_f]My[/name_f] middle name is two syllables and if it weren’t a family last name, would have dated me as an 80’s baby. I love having a short first name. And when I feel inspired I introduce myself with the full 3 syllables of my first and middle together. All in all though, I agree it is a matter of choice, taste and flow. There are ways to make almost any name work in either spot.

There are combos I really love:

Girls
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Leocadia[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] or [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] [name_f]Zephirine[/name_f]
[name_f]Opal[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalba[/name_f]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f] [name_f]Theodora[/name_f]
[name_u]Lee[/name_u] [name_f]Raziela[/name_f] or Libi [name_f]Ravenna[/name_f]

I think a streamlined first name can sound really strong and definite. And I have a couple other girls’ firsts that I’m still looking for perfect companions for.

For boys, there are many short first names I like but I have a harder time making combos.

I think it really matters on how it sounds and the flow of the names together.

I think it totally depends on the surname.
