First name?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! Which of the following names would you choose as a first and why? Which would you lose?

AmeIie
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Kaia[/name_f]
LiIIian
LiIia
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]

TIA!

Amelie or [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] because I don’t think they would work well as a mn. I definitely think [name_f]Rose[/name_f] gives off mn vibes, but again this is all just my personal opinion. I think the other’s could work as either fn or mn depending on the names they’re put with.

I would choose [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]. It’s pretty and whimsical and brings to mind the wonderful film. And it’s my daughter’s name

I would eliminate [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]. For some reason the sound just doesn’t appeal to me. I’m not a massive fan of [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] either.

Rose, [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] are lovely though.

Here’s my thoughts:

[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] - I absolutely love [name_f]Mia[/name_f] and [name_f]Amy[/name_f], but funnily enough I’ve never been a fan of [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. It’s also very common if that’s something you’re worried about.

[name_f]Rose[/name_f] - [name_f]My[/name_f] #1 girl name! Elegant yet simple! [name_u]Love[/name_u], love, love!

[name_f]Ivy[/name_f] - Not one of my favorites. Makes me think of poison ivy (both the itchy plant and the comic villain.)

[name_f]Kaia[/name_f] - really neutral on this one. I think it’s cool, just not my style.

[name_f]Lillian[/name_f] + [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] - I love both of these! I have a difficult time choosing between them! Both are gentle and sweet!

[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] - I’m not personally into godess names, but I do quite like the sound of [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]. Not my style, but a nice name!

Overall, I would choose [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]!

For me I would chose [name_f]Lilian[/name_f] and [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f], I think it comes down to taste as I’m not a fan of [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], and [name_f]Kaia[/name_f], and feel [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] is to popular, out of the list [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f], [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] are my favorite!

Names I would choose: [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Kaia[/name_f], and [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]

Why:
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] - I think this name is so beautiful and such a wonderful alternative to [name_f]Emily[/name_f]. I’ve never cared for [name_f]Emily[/name_f] but I adore [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] and love that it has an ie ending rather than a y. It’s very on-trend without feeling trendy. It’s a great [name_u]French[/name_u] choice too if someone needs a bilingual baby name.

Rose - [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is one of my favorite classic girl names. It’s pretty without being frilly and feminine yet only one syllable. It’s also compatible with lots of different styles and is often quite common as a middle, which makes it feels fresh as a first name and a great honorary choice. I’ve noticed that I tend to prefer the simple and elegant [name_f]Rose[/name_f] to [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], etc. Many people return to [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] as a nickname, which I think is a testament to its classic nature. It can also fit a lot of different types of girls yet still has an inherent softness and cuteness about it.

Ivy - this name is sassy meets sweet. It’s short and easy spell and pronounce yet packs a pretty big punch for just three letters. It’s also a strong I name, replacing the more popular [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] and even feeling fresh in the same way [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f] used to. I also think it can fit any kind of girl - from sporty to artsy to preppy. This also makes it versatile and compatible with a lot of different middle names. [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] feels like the new [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] to me.

Kaia - [name_f]My[/name_f] cousin is naming her baby [name_f]Kaiya[/name_f] and I think it’s just a perfect balance of spunky and sassy. It’s another name that is short but punchy and it’s a nice strong K name for girls, which you don’t see a lot of anymore among all the vowel-heavy names. I also genuinely like it spelled any way - [name_f]Kaia[/name_f], [name_u]Kaya[/name_u], or [name_f]Kaiya[/name_f] - which is unusual for me. I think it’s because each spelling opens itself up to a different kind of person wearing it. It feels like a natural successor for people who like [name_f]Kayla[/name_f], [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f], and [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f] but want something new. [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] and [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f] have even had multiple spellings as well ([name_f]Kailey[/name_f], [name_f]Kayleigh[/name_f], [name_f]Katelyn[/name_f], [name_f]Kaitlynn[/name_f], etc.) It’s probably my favorite K name for a girl.

Lillian - this one is just a no-brainer: classic, elegant, beautiful. It can be shortened to [name_f]Lily[/name_f], which is sweet, but it also sounds strong and even regal in its full form. It’s feminine without feeling too girly and a cute name that doesn’t end in -a. It’s recognizable in quite a few languages (my husband is Puerto Rican and his cousin’s name is [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] pronounced the same as it is in [name_f]English[/name_f]). It isn’t even nearly as popular as [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] or [name_f]Emma[/name_f] despite being just as classic. I see no downside to this name.

I would lose: [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]

Why:
[name_f]Lilia[/name_f] - I don’t care for this name at all. I think [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] lacks the class of [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] without having the cuteness of [name_f]Lily[/name_f]. The -a and -ia endings are incredibly popular right now and that makes [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] blend rather than stand out. I’m not saying these endings are out (my top choice is [name_f]Luna[/name_f], so I love them). I’m just saying for this family of names I prefer [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and and even [name_f]Lila[/name_f] over [name_f]Lilia[/name_f].

Ariadne - I just find nothing appealing about this name. I want to like it, but it never feels quite right in any setting, whether I’m reading it or saying it aloud. I have to be honest I’m not 100% confident on the pronunciation, and I’ve heard a couple different ones, but I’m not particularly fond of any of them. I also love [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] and [name_f]Adriana[/name_f] and it almost at first glance looks like a misspelling. I want to like this name, and I don’t think it’s a definite no. I just think compared to the other options on this list, it doesn’t come out on top.

Besides my all-time favorite ([name_f]Lilia[/name_f]), I would choose [name_f]Rose[/name_f], lose [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]. [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]…just does not sound appealing to me personally. But [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is a beautiful classic that deserves more use outside the middle spot. :rose:

I’d choose [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], it’s sweet and chic. I’d drop [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f].

I think I would use [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] the most but [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] are close to my style too! All of the names are fine to me except [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilia[/name_f]… I’m just not a fan of names like this

I love [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] and [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] -both are sweet but strong

I’d personally lose [name_f]Rose[/name_f] as it doesn’t feel exciting as your other names

For first names, [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] are my favorites.

I’d move LiIia and [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] to middle name position.

Amelie–Definite yes! It feels lively, almost musical, yet warm and approachable. And it hits the distinctive-yet-familiar sweet spot, at least where I live (U.S.). It’s longer than most of my favorites, but I would use this one in a heartbeat.

Rose–Another yes! [name_f]Lovely[/name_f], sweet, strong, and down-to-earth. I think I prefer it to any of its elaborations (although I also really like [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]), and I definitely prefer it as a first name rather than a middle name as it still feels underused in the first name spot to me. I also adore [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] as a nickname (or even a full!).

Ivy–I want to be put off by the associations (poison ivy, etc.) but [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] just has such a charming bright sound that I have to love it. It’s short and simple but packs a punch of personality. I would definitely use it, and I think it would pair especially nicely with a more elaborate middle.

Kaia–This is outside of my usual style/comfort zone, but it’s lovely! It’s distinctive yet understated, and I love the clear, energetic sound. As a bonus, it would also be an honor name possibility for me. I’m not sure whether I would actually use [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] in practice, but I can definitely see the appeal and it’s growing on me! I like it quite a lot!

Lillian–This has a sweet, floral-scented vintage charm that’s hard for me not to love. It’s elegant yet down-to-earth. The only probably is that I go back and forth quite a bit on [name_f]Lily[/name_f], which seems like an inevitable nickname (I do prefer [name_f]Lillie[/name_f], though, which might be an option). I wonder if I might like [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] best as a middle name?

Lilia–This has been growing on me recently! I’m still not completely sold, but I can definitely see the appeal. It’s light and pretty yet packs plenty of punch. For me it has the same [name_f]Lily[/name_f] issue as [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] (although I prefer [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] overall). It wouldn’t be my pick–at least not yet–but it’s very pretty!

Ariadne–This is the only one from your list that I can’t say I would use. It’s an interesting, distinctive, and meaningful choice, so in that sense, I can see the appeal. I just honestly don’t like the spelling or sound–but that’s 100% a personal taste thing, nothing objectively wrong with it at all. I would “lose” this one, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a lovely name.

Overall, I adore your list! [name_f]My[/name_f] top picks would be [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], followed by [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] is a maybe and [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] is the only one I don’t care for. This is a really lovely, can’t-go-wrong selection of names though!

Ivy is my favorite for sure! So sweet and botanical without being frilly. I would use [name_f]Rose[/name_f] in the first name slot as well, but it’s much lower on the list for me.

The only one I really dislike is [name_f]Lilia[/name_f]. It seems needlessly elongated to me – literally gilding the lily.

Ivy is my favorite. Short, sweet, spunky, easy to say/spell.
Lose [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] (nice, but so formal) or [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] (nice, but hard to say).

Rose followed by [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilia[/name_f]. I would lose [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] and [name_f]Kaia[/name_f], they are nice too, but only because I like the other names more.

I love [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] and [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] !

I would choose [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] as a first name! It’s quite familiar, but rich, enchanting, and powerful. Of them, I would lose [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. There’s nothing wrong with it, it’s just not my thing, so feels a bit plain alongside some of the others.

Ranking them…

  1. [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]
  2. [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
  3. [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]
  4. [name_f]Lilia[/name_f]
  5. [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]
  6. [name_f]Kaia[/name_f]
  7. [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]

My favorite is probably [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] (bright, simple, versatile), followed closely by [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] (lovely and magical). [name_f]My[/name_f] least favorite is probably [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] (I’m not a fan of the sound or the spelling) or [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] (I see this name a lot and I’m not a huge fan).

This is tough choice between [name_f]Rose[/name_f] & [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] for my favourite one on the list :bouquet:

I have always loved [name_f]Rose[/name_f] it’s a beautiful romantic choice and if circumstances were different I would use [name_f]Rose[/name_f] in a heartbeat. [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] is the name I’m using for my daughter due in [name_u]February[/name_u] it’s gorgeous lily variant again that’s not used commonly she feels romantic and I love that it’s a name universally used including Eastern Europe & [name_u]Israel[/name_u]. So it’s hard choice but I think because I associate [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] so much with my daughter and I’m loving the name so entirely I think it’s my favourite.

Kaia is my least favourite I’m not keen on that hard ‘k’ sound for girls whereas I love [name_u]Kai[/name_u] for a boy!
