First post and would like some opinions.....WDYT of the name Alaïa?

My hubby and I have started our name list since we are hoping to be pregnant by the end of the year or the following year. One name that has made our list for girls is [name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa. This name has origins of the Basque region and Muslim and it means “joyful” or “sublime”. We really like this name because my hubby and I have roots in Spain and it goes so well with our last name.

Here are some combos we have with this:

  • [name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa [name_f]Milena[/name_f] (my middle name)
  • [name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa [name_f]Marie[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa [name_f]Elise[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]

I would love to hear your opinions and any other suggestions!

Bump* It would be nice to know the opinions of others.

I love the name! I think it is so unique and quite beautiful. I like [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Marie[/name_f], and [name_f]Elise[/name_f] for middle names.

It looks very beautiful to me. I’m not sure how you pronounce it? [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] - is it [name_m]AH[/name_m]-lay-ah?

I’m also not sure how to pronounce this.

I love [name_f]Alaia[/name_f]! It has a lovely meaning, and such a sweet sound. I’ve always said it ah-LYE-ah. Is that incorrect?

I’m not sure I really am hugely fond of any of your combos–I like [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] the best, but I’d like to see [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] even more–but I’d love to see [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Camille[/name_f] or [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]. [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]? [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Emeline[/name_f]?

Good luck!

Thanks for your responses, ladies!

In Spanish, it’s pronounced “ah-LIE-ah” but I have heard other pronounce it “Uh-lay-uh” or “[name_m]Ah[/name_m]-lay-ah”

I really love [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] but my hubby really wants to use my middle name. Hopefully, I can convince him when the time comes

I like the combo [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] and how it flows. I’m not the biggest fan of [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] mostly because if the spelling. I dislike short names that use the same letter for nearly every other letter. It just visually doesn’t appeal to me.

[name_f]Lovely[/name_f] suggestions!

I like your suggestions of [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Camille[/name_f] and [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Emeline[/name_f]. Both middle names flow so well and sound very feminine. [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] sounds so dreamy but sadly, it does not sound as nice in Spanish. Both of our families speak mainly Spanish so we agreed we would pick names that both families can say without butchering our child’s name.

[name_u]LOVE[/name_u] it! ([name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_m]Azzedine[/name_m], who is a great designer.) The name’s meaning is also lovely. My faves are [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Milena[/name_f] and [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_u]Valentine[/name_u].

Thank you Andrealynn and yes, he is a great designer! Hubby did not like [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] as a first name but it made its way into the middle name list.

[name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa is beautiful! This is in my official top ten. Basque names are gorgeous.

[name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa [name_f]Imani[/name_f]
[name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa [name_f]Bel[/name_f]én
[name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f]
[name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa [name_f]Jolene[/name_f]

Another name you might like is [name_f]Eulalia[/name_f], which means “sweet-speaking”. A nickname is [name_f]Laia[/name_f].

Alaia is pretty. I think of the fashion designer and pronounce it as Nameberry states. I think you’ll get “lay” and “lie” prns interchangeably, but people will catch on due to the familiarity of Amaia, Maia and Kaia. Same combination of letters and sounds. I do think the umlaut complicates it however and would leave it off if in the USA. Otherwise I think you’ll get even more pronunciation variations (americans may reference the other words/names they know that have the same accent mark: Chloe, Zoe, Naive – many can be pretty ignorant of accent marks, as they just aren’t commonly used even on words that have them) all of which give an “eee” sound, and that’s not what you desire. Or just be willing to combat some seriously botched attempts.

Alaia Jessamine springs to mind. Alaia Paloma, Alaia Cosima, Alaia Ruby, Alaia Marguerite. Alaia Delphine. Alaia Meredith.

  • [name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa [name_f]Milena[/name_f] (my middle name)
  • [name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa [name_f]Marie[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa [name_f]Elise[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Ala[/name_f]ïa [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]

I like [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] - so pretty! [name_f]Milena[/name_f] is nice, but I dislike that both names end in a. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] Milene?
My favourite is [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]. I don’t normally like [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], but here it looks and sounds stunning! [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] would be my second choice.
[name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f] - seems to flow together - too many similar sounds.
[name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] - [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] is too flouncy for me.
[name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] - this works, I just think [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] isn’t very creative, and don’t like it as much as [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] & [name_f]Marie[/name_f].
[name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] - Pretty, but the double a ending bothers me a bit. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]?

A few more ideas:
[name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]
[name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Violette[/name_f]
[name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]

I love it! So cute!
My favourite is [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], super romantic!

At first I thought it was pronounced a-lay-uh (which I like) but nameberry has it as al-EYE-a, which I don’t love as much. [name_m]How[/name_m] are you pronouncing it?

My favorite combos are [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] and [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f]

Depending on where you’re located I’d think about the ramifications of the accent mark. It’ll likely be dropped most of the time and might cause more of a headache than positively help people pronounce it.

I know several girls named uh-lie-uh, spelled in several different ways ([name_f]Aliah[/name_f], [name_f]Aaliyah[/name_f], [name_u]Elia[/name_u], etc.). It’s an attractive sounding name.

My favorite combination is [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f]. Beautiful flow and [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] is a gorgeous name.

[name_f]Alaia[/name_f] is gorgeous! I always thought it was pronounced it ah-lay-uh but I like ah-lie-uh just as much.

My favorite combos are…
[name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]
[name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_u]Valentine[/name_u] (I also like [name_u]Valentine[/name_u] more than [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] b/c of the double A ending)

and previous suggestions

[name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]
[name_m]Alain[/name_m] [name_f]Belen[/name_f]
[name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]

@Simonekadele – [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Jolene[/name_f] is a wonderful combo! I would need to save that in my list….hehe ” My hubby loves the name [name_f]Eulalia[/name_f] and it landed on our potential first name list. One combo we have is [name_f]Eulalia[/name_f] Lillienne.

@aym – [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Paloma[/name_f]!

@waverly123 – I’m normally feel the same way about names that have the same letter ending. [name_u]Valentine[/name_u] would be a nice break from all the “a’s” the name already has.

@niamhethna – Thank you ”

@seazuno86 – Hubby and I pronounce the name “ah-lie-uh” so pretty much like how Nameberry has it. I attached a video on how we pronounce the name. I think our pronunciation is a bit different since we say it how we would in Spanish.

@kala_way – As much as I would like to keep the accent mark, I think it would be best without since we live in the United States. We like the combo [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] because there is a break with all the “a’s” in the first name and [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] is very easy to pronounce in Spanish.

@tiannarose – Thank you! [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] has been bumped up to the first choice if choose this name. I’m very happy with the combo and its two names that no one in our families have. Hubby has suggested [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] as a potential middle name but I like the spelling of “[name_f]Juliette[/name_f]” better. [name_f]Alaia[/name_f] [name_f]Belen[/name_f] just got the thumbs up so it is going on the list!

Thanks so much Berries for your opinion, I truly appreciate it!!!
