Hello Nameberries! I’ve been a long time lurker of this site but am just now creating my first post! I just found out I am pregnant and now that it is real, I need some fresh girl name ideas!
I like classic/vintage names that aren’t too trendy and have simple spellings. Our surname starts with a T and is 3 syllables. Our goal is to have a couple of name options picked out and then decide when the baby arrives. I’d love some feedback on my current girl choices and any suggestions you may have. TIA!
Rose - This has been my favorite name for a long time! I love that it is timeless and classic. Even though it’s a common middle name choice, I feel like I rarely hear it as a first name.
Rosemary - My favorite rose variant names! It feels so sweet and vintage and ready for a comebackI love that it has Rose built in as a nickname.
Louisa - I adore this classic yet under the radar name, but my husband is not a fan and I’m having a hard time convincing him that we should keep it on our list!
Susannah - I’ve loved this name since high school, but I don’t love Susie or Sue as nicknames. Will Susannah always be shortened to a nick name?
Ruth - I like how Ruth feels simple yet strong, and I absolutely adore the nickname Ruthie!
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]–beautiful and timeless and definitely deserving of more first name love!
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]–I completely agree with your description! Such a warm, lovely name. I adore [name_u]Romy[/name_u] as a nickname option too.
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]–gorgeous and strong and as you said, so underused. Maybe your husband could be convinced with a nickname–Lou, [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Lula[/name_f]?
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]–feels like a warm hug in name form! I don’t think [name_f]Susie[/name_f] or [name_f]Sue[/name_f] are completely inevitable if you’re willing to be firm about avoiding them. You could also try to steer towards Annie/Sosie/another short form to keep the [name_f]Sue[/name_f] temptation at bay!
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f]–I 100% agree with everything you said about this one! I adore Ruth’s brightness and gentle strength and would absolutely love to meet a little [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] “Ruthie”!
From your list, I think [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] “Ruthie” is my favorite, but it’s a hard choice! They’re all such lovely options. If you don’t have a middle name picked out already, I’m finding myself drawn to [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] Rosemary–I love the alliteration of it, but ymmv of course!
Now for other suggestions (although I really adore the options you have already)…
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_u]Alma[/name_u] [name_f]Anna[/name_f] or [name_u]Anne[/name_u] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] [name_f]Diana[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] [name_f]Helen[/name_f] or [name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] or [name_u]June[/name_u] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] or [name_f]May[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] or [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] [name_u]Marie[/name_u] or [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] [name_f]Nell[/name_f] [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] [name_f]Tess[/name_f] or [name_f]Theresa[/name_f]
[name_u]Love[/name_u] all of your choices! [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] is my favorite followed by [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] and [name_f]Susannah[/name_f].
I do think [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] will end up shortened to a nickname – my personal favorites are [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] and [name_f]Annie[/name_f]. Would it be a dealbreaker if your [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] preferred [name_f]Susie[/name_f] or [name_f]Sue[/name_f] as a nickname as she got older? If yes, I would remove it from the list.
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] is lovely, but I would drop it from the list if your husband isn’t on board.
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] and [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] are lovely. [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] might get [name_f]Susie[/name_f] but you could push for a prefer nickname? [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Ruthie[/name_f] are sweet too!
I really like your list, but I think my favorite is [name_f]Ruth[/name_f]! I love that name and the [name_f]Ruthie[/name_f] nickname.
Some similar “feel” names to me -
[name_f]Esther[/name_f] “Essie”
[name_f]Mary[/name_f]
[name_f]Mara[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] (another [name_f]Rose[/name_f] variation)
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Naomi[/name_f]
I would also like to say [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is lovely and timeless (as is your entire list -I see you [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] ). The only other [name_f]Rose[/name_f] I can think of in recent time as a first name was [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] Johanssen’s daughter.
Thank you for all your sweet comments! I’m glad to see so much love for [name_f]Ruth[/name_f]! We have a few family honor name ideas for middle names but haven’t settled on anything yet, but I absolutely love the sound of [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]!
From your suggestions, I love [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_u]June[/name_u], and [name_f]Mae[/name_f].
Great list! I love [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and most of its variants! I adore [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] so much! A friend of mine has a [name_f]Rosa[/name_f]
Oh, congratulations, and what wonderful name style you have!
I love everything on your list. [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] is my favorite (I would shorten mine to [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f], but it’s lovely on its own and unlikely these days that someone would use a nickname you aren’t using). But [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] are high on my list, too. And [name_f]Ruthie[/name_f] is so sweet!
I don’t think you need a single suggestion, but for fun:
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] - I agree with everything you said about [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. It’s definitely refreshing as a first name.
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] - I’m not a fan personally I definitely prefer other [name_f]Rose[/name_f] variations like [name_f]Rosalyn[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] more.
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] - Maybe [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] as an alternative?
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] - I think it’s pretty likely for [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] to be shortened. I really like [name_f]Sosie[/name_f] but that’s probably to close to [name_f]Susie[/name_f] for you. I also like the suggestion of [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f].
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f] - [name_f]Ruthie[/name_f] is adorable.
[name_f]My[/name_f] thoughts on your wonderful list…
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] has also always been a favourite of mine she’s just so classic, feminine and romantic. A really gorgeous name. I agree that she is a popular middle name as well as a popular name for second name in a hyphenated combination like Ellie-Rose for example. Whereas [name_f]Rose[/name_f] as a first name is really not that common she deserves to be used as a first name.
Another rarer [name_f]Rose[/name_f] option on your list is [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]! I love [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] and agree it’s a great way to get to the nickname [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] is so wholesome, timeless and has this lovely cottagecore imagery. I love the association with the herb, the sea and of course roses. [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] is ready for a comeback I love her.
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] is great a beautiful refreshing classic with a range of sweet nicknames but I think if your husband isn’t on board take off the list.
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] is another beautiful classic she feels fresh, elegant and visually attractive. I think [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] is charming and if you insist/persist that she’s [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] not Sue/Susie you could control the nickname to a certain extent but it may be challenging if she gets older. I like the idea of nickname [name_f]Suki[/name_f] or [name_f]Annie[/name_f] which you could get people on board with it just depends on how much of an issue potentially not being able to control the nickname could be.
Finally I agree [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] is charming and a wonderful option. She’s so stunning! [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] is wholesome, timeless, streamlined and elegant. She has the sweet meaning ‘companion’ and the nickname [name_f]Ruthie[/name_f] is endearing.
If it was me I would shortlist [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] & [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] they seem perfect with no reservations from you and your husband.
Rose - While it isn’t my style, I do see what you mean as it being a fresh take, since it’s always in the middle. It will also balance a three syllable last name!
Rosemary - I really like the idea of Rosemary nn Rose!
Louisa - I am with you on loving Louisa. The vintage charm is through the roof! My husband would hate it also, and it clashes with my last name, but I do like it a lot.
Susannah - This is another favorite of mine, and with a MIL named Susan one that I seriously considered. I don’t think it will necessarily be shortened, because so many kids do go by full names nowadays.
Ruth - This was my grandma’s name, so yes I like it. And, like Rose, the short simple name will pair well with the longer last name.
Rose-It is a timeless classic. It’s a great balance of elegance & sweet floral imagery. I don’t hear it much as a first name either. I love the natural lovable nn of [name_f]Rosie[/name_f]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]Rosie[/name_f]? It may or may not be unavoidable.
Rosemary-I really like [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and I don’t dislike [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. But [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] doesn’t do it for me. Maybe it looks too much like two names.
Louisa-Louisa is beautiful. It’s rarely heard but easily recognizable. It’s quiet and sweet but bold and smart for a grown woman. It has cute spunky built it nns of [name_f]Lulu[/name_f], [name_f]Lula[/name_f] and [name_f]Lola[/name_f] too.
Susannah-For some reason I really prefer [name_f]Susanna[/name_f], but the ‘h’ doesn’t ruin it for me. I think that [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] is more common too. Anyway, [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] is lovely. It’s kind of a similar vibe to [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], but a little more [name_u]Southern[/name_u] [name_u]Bell[/name_u]. I don’t know that you could totally avoid an occasional [name_f]Susie[/name_f] or [name_f]Sue[/name_f] though. Especially if you were to call her [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] day to day. I like the nns [name_f]Anna[/name_f] & [name_f]Annie[/name_f]. [name_u]Or[/name_u] the more stretch nns [name_u]Scout[/name_u], [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] or [name_f]Sally[/name_f].
Ruth-Yes, [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] is totally simple yet strong. [name_f]Vintage[/name_f] & feminine, but not frilly. And [name_f]Ruthie[/name_f] is super cute.
