Fitzwilliam?

Hello berries!

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this as a first name. Recently came across it in real life, and I’ve been thinking about him ever since! I’m a huge fan of Pride and Prejudice (as many are), but always thought [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] was a little on the nose? But now that I’ve seen it in real life, I sort of REALLY love it, and I can totally see it on my own list ([name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] could be a brother to [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_m]Caspar[/name_m], [name_m]Boaz[/name_m], [name_u]Avery[/name_u], [name_u]Aquila[/name_u], [name_m]Lorcan[/name_m], [name_m]Bartholomew[/name_m], [name_m]Judah[/name_m], [name_m]Jack[/name_m], etc., right? lol)? I love the nn [name_m]Fitz[/name_m], too. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Does it change your mind on its usability to know a someone I grew up with and went to school with for years is the one with the [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m]? I wouldn’t say I’m close by any means, but we were born 4 days apart and grew up together in church and school, but haven’t talked to him for probably close to 15 years, and honestly we’ve never been that close, even though we did grow up together. How do you feel about using a rare name, if someone you spent so much of your childhood with used it first?

Lastly, MN ideas? I’ve thought of a couple ideas, but I’m not sure I love any of them?

Thanks, berries!

I love [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m]! It’s a unique, classic name with a fun nickname. I think the P&P reference helps give it familiarity. It’s totally usable.

I like it! Who doesn’t love Mr. [name_u]Darcy[/name_u]?

Fitz is a really cool nn too, but you could use [name_m]William[/name_m] or any nn variation too. I’d probably go with a shorter mn since [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] is so long

Fitzwilliam [name_u]Ash[/name_u]
[name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] [name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] [name_m]Clark[/name_m]

[name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] [name_m]Cole[/name_m]
[name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] [name_u]Grey[/name_u]
[name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]
[name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] [name_u]Brooks[/name_u]

If you do decide [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] is too much for a child, [name_m]Fitz[/name_m] can also be a nickname for [name_m]Frederick[/name_m].

I love it! Honestly, it’s such a cool name. I’ve been seriously considering promoting it from gp myself lately. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Hmm… I don’t know. I suppose it would depend on how comfortable you are with it. I mean, if there’s the potential for you to run into him often, it might be a little odd. But if you aren’t likely to see him often, if ever, then I don’t see a problem with it.

Fitzwilliam is one of my favorite names! And I would totally use it if my bro-in-law’s name wasn’t [name_m]William[/name_m] - and there are so many other [name_m]Williams[/name_m] on his side. [name_m]Casper[/name_m] [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] is a favorite too. I might still use it as a middle.

I might still use [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] if someone I knew but hadn’t seen in 15 years had used it. [name_f]My[/name_f] SO’s childhood friend used [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] for their girl and I would still use that.

Casper [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] is AMAZING! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I agree with others about using [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] even if you knew someone with it, especially since he’s not a close friend and you haven’t seen him in a long time. It can be hard to find a name that literally has no connection to a person you know, and I’m guessing the [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] you knew didn’t leave a sour taste if you still like the name since my DH and I definitely don’t like names because of people we knew from school, even though it was long enough ago lol.

I love it. It sounds quite posh and that’s exactly why I like it :grin: Like [name_m]William[/name_m] but fancier and unusual. I think it’s absolutely fine for you to use it, considering you haven’t talked to him for years.

I’ve always had a thing for [name_m]Fitz[/name_m] names! In my ancestry I have quite a few Anglo-[name_m]Norman[/name_m] and [name_u]French[/name_u] ancestors and many have swoon-worthy [name_m]Fitz[/name_m] names like FitzAkaris, FitzRanulf, Fitzhenry, Fitzbardolf, Fitzwalter, and Fitzalan.

And I think knowing previously knowing someone with the name doesn’t change it usability too much, especially if you are no longer in contact with that person. So, if you want to use it, go for it.

Fitzwilliam would pair well with a lot of more classic middle names in my opinion:

Fitzwilliam [name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u]
[name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] [name_m]Luke[/name_m]

[name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]

Thank you, everyone!

@Greyblue - I really like [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]! I do have [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u], but I really like [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] together.

@jk_garrison - thank you! I really like [name_u]Everett[/name_u] with him, maybe even [name_m]Josiah[/name_m]?

@lehassebrock - haha, exactly! And makes sense. I actually do two middles, so one of them probably will be short. [name_u]Grey[/name_u]’s a family name, and he’s so nice with [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m]! I also like [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] [name_u]Jude[/name_u]/Judah, but [name_m]Judah[/name_m] [name_u]Theophile[/name_u] [name_u]Grey[/name_u] is already on my list, so not sure if I’d use him… I do like [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] too, but would probably use [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] for him. :heart: And oh, this connection is not [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] (he’s a [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] lol); his son is [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m]. If he was [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] I’d easily write it off but since his kid used it and we were very competitive in elementary school, it just sort of feels like an odd dynamic.

@elanorelle - Yeah, have literally not seen him since 2006. :rofl: He’s a Facebook acquaintance at this point, so he may find out I have a [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m], but I think it’s honestly likely he wouldn’t even notice, lol. I think my concern was more… it always seems like it’s less like “stealing” if it’s a popular name, but if it’s a rare name like [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] or [name_f]Anina[/name_f], it’s much easier to feel like name theft? Not even sure he would care honestly, but anyway.

@cactusgram - thanks love! I don’t know how it took me so long to see [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m]’s appeal. le sigh. [name_m]Caspar[/name_m] [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] is so handsome! I don’t think I could ever give up my [name_m]Caspar[/name_m] [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] [name_u]Eden[/name_u], but would love to meet a little [name_m]Caspar[/name_m] [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m]! And actually, his name isn’t [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m], but his son’s is. I don’t think I’d mind so much if it was just an acquaintance had it, but since he USED it for his own kid, that’s what has me hesitating, I guess? I love your ideas of [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Rufus[/name_m], and [name_u]August[/name_u]!

@ethelmary - thank you! I like [name_m]Ansel[/name_m] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] especially, maybe [name_u]Amos[/name_u] too! [name_f]My[/name_f] nephew is [name_m]Ol[/name_m]!ver, so I don’t think I’d use that, but I like the “A” names a lot!

@emarias22 - ahh, thank you! I love your idea of [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] [name_m]Adam[/name_m]!

@EllieWilbury - thank you! I like the idea of [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] [name_u]Royce[/name_u] and [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] [name_m]Leo[/name_m](n)! [name_u]Grayson[/name_u] honors my grandma, so I want to love that, but [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] and [name_u]Grayson[/name_u] seem so different stylistically?

The name is certainly a head turner - I like it!

Your “stealing” dilemma intrigues me. I think you’re right about it. For me, any situation where you only truly can see yourself using the name AFTER you see someone else using it qualifies as either stealing or copying (stealing for rare names, copying for common names, though maybe since you did like the name beforehand your case can be reduced to copying).

Whatever you call it, if you agree with my conclusion then that leaves you with a couple of considerations: 1) the feelings of the person you would be copying/stealing from. If this were a close friend or family member, you might choose not to do it for the sake of their feelings, or you might approach them about it beforehand to see if they could be okay with it. Since you aren’t close with this person, this probably isn’t much of a concern for you. 2) how you feel about it. Are there other people in your life who also know the person who named their kid [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] and will their opinion of you using it bother you? If no one else will know, are you okay with it? If you can be at peace with all of this, then go for it! It’s a good name and it sounds like you won’t have any regrets :blush:
