Hello berries! I am popping out from the jan- march thread with a quick (and disgusting) question. I am 37 weeks 3 days. Today I had a cervical exam. Was dilated 2 cm and about 50% effaced, very soft, and baby had dropped. Anyways, as normal, the dr warned that I could have some spotting. I’ve had two or three checks before without any. But a few hours later, I went pee, and when I wiped there was a little clot of blood. And more when I wiped again! I put a pad on. I had barely any leak onto pad over the course of the evening, but every time I wiped, there were some clots, chunks, mucusy blood… Gross I know. So tonight I talked to the dr on call and she said this was normal and just meant my cervix was changing, softening and opening, all good signs! Well, as soon as I hung up, I went to the bathroom and when I got up I noticed a big chunk in the toilet! It was bloody, chunky, but not really mucusy. It looked (gross, I’m sorry) fleshy! [name_f]My[/name_f] husband used to be an EMT and (again, gross…) decided to fish it out of the toilet with a glove. He said it felt fleshy, not like mucus that would fall apart, but actually like it had tension. I’m sorry, I know this was gross, but does anyone know what this could be? [name_f]My[/name_f] grandma had 5 kids and my aunt has 4 little ones, so I called them right away and they both said mucus plug. Anyone have a mucus plug or bloody show like this?
Ya, mucous plug is firmer than regular mucous, and paler, from what I experienced, with bloody bits. Betcha you’ll have your baby in your arms within 48 hours.
If you are concerned, experiencing abdominal pain, or bleeding more than you feel is okay then go in to triage. [name_f]My[/name_f] mom had 3 pregnancies & with her first she had no contractions, just bleeding & feeling weird. Whenever she called the hospital they gave her the usual “wait til they’re 3-5 min apart” spiel but she went in anyway & she was at 8cm when she got there. [name_m]Trust[/name_m] your instincts.
Mucus plug (you can google images of it, although everyone’s looks different).
It’s likely you’ll go into labor soon, but I have heard of women losing the plug weeks before labor, and it can even grow back
Thank you both for responding! It really sort of freaked me out! But it seems the bleeding stopped as soon as that big chunk came out. Is that typical of a mucous plug/bloody show as well? It’s the next morning now, and there isn’t any blood in sight!
You sure know the way to my heart by saying it probably means labor is right around the corner though- I hope so!!!
Edited for privacy.
Sounds like mucus plug to me too…I lost bits of mine a couple weeks beforehand, but the bloody larger pieces (TMI again, oy) 24 hours before she arrived.
And I’m with everyone else. Mucus plug. It’s gross but it means the baby should come soon. Or it might still be weeks. When I lost mine, it was at like 37 weeks, I had to be induced at 40 weeks and a day. When my mom lost hers, she went into labor the next day. It’s different for everyone, but yea, it means the babys getting ready to come out.
Wow, that would’ve freaked me out, too! I’ve never had that happen in any of my pregnancies (assuming it is the mucus plug) and am really surprised that it’s common. Well, ya learn somethin’ new every day.
Good luck with your upcoming delivery!
