I am currently working on a blog post for floral and plant names, and while I have a shortlist, I would love some suggestions for more ideas to add to the list, and thought that Nameberry would be a good spot to ask about it. I am trying to cover all the aspects of floral names, from the weird and wonderful to the tried and true choices, and would love to know what everyone’s favourite flower name is, so I can include it in the post.
So, What is YOUR favourite floral/plant related name? (Please try to stick to ones that are strictly plants, like [name_f]Violet[/name_f] or [name_f]Iolanthe[/name_f], rather than ones with a plant related meaning, like [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] (forest). Thanks!)
ETA: In the interest of time - I’ll close this thread at 9pm tonight (EST) so I can complete the blogpost for the weekend
My favourite flower name would be [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. I am tired of it as a middle name but it’s just the most darling name when used upfront and I don’t think you can get more classic or classier than [name_f]Rose[/name_f].
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] is another favourite, so very sweet yet full of strength.
And then I obviously love the “mother name” of all flower names, [name_f]Flora[/name_f]. Not sure if that fits in with your “strictly flower names” but with it’s meaning “flower”, being the goddess of flowers and spring and it very obviously relating to flowers through “[name_f]Flora[/name_f] and [name_f]Fauna[/name_f]” (rather than [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] which I would have never guessed the meaning of), I might as well mention it…
A lovely blog post idea, btw., I’ll check it out once it’s written!
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f], [name_u]River[/name_u] and [name_f]Willow[/name_f] are guilty pleasures of mine.
In fact, with my daughter - I was banking on naming her [name_f]Willow[/name_f] all up until she was born, then I saw her and just changed my mind. lol
Right now my absolute favourite is [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]. Also (sorry about repeats):
[name_u]Rue[/name_u]
[name_f]Lilac[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f]
[name_f]Lavender[/name_f]
[name_f]Tulip[/name_f]
[name_f]Saffron[/name_f]
Calluna (Botanical name for [name_f]Heather[/name_f], does this count?)
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Azalea[/name_f]
I have more, but these are the ones I currently favour for girls. I mentioned [name_f]Verbena[/name_f] to my mother and was surprised she liked it better in Norwegian than English She always surprises me when it comes to names…
[name_f]Marguerite[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], and [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] are my absolute favourites, followed by [name_f]Clover[/name_f], [name_f]Willow[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], and [name_f]Marigold[/name_f].
[name_f]Saffron[/name_f] - I am not sure if this fits your qualifications. I’m including it anyway because it’s the spice derived from the Crocus / ‘[name_f]Saffron[/name_f] Crocus’ flower. I associate it with nature names.
The following names are on my list of loves. [name_f]Briar[/name_f] would be on there as well, except my married name is [name_f]Briar[/name_f] with a “d” at the end, so…
[name_f]Flora[/name_f] totally counts!! I just meant ones that aren’t explicitly connected - international forms and words that simply mean ‘flower’ are fine!
Hmm, I’m not sure I’d count it, as I’m trying to compile a list with the births for the US and E&W, but I can’t find any data on Calluna as a given name - but leave it with me! I may use it as a bonus option, or in separate ‘unique, whimsical girls name’ thread!
[name_f]Saffron[/name_f] definitely fits! It’s also one of my favourites.
[name_f]Verbena[/name_f] is lovely!
For everyone wanting to read the blog post - the link to my blog is in my signature, I will PM anyone who’s interested the link to the post when it is published, as well as posting it on here. I have also decided to edit the time remaining to send in floral names, because I wasn’t expecting so many responses or options, and now I have to narrow the lists down
Please have suggestions sent in by 9pm tonight (EST - roughly 3.5 hours from now!) so I have time to narrow down the options and do the research!
You could do quite a few lily-related. [name_f]Laelia[/name_f], [name_f]Lila[/name_f], [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], whatever floats your boat! hope this helps!
Also, please include the link! I would love to read it
