Florence on a boy

Could [name_f]Florence[/name_f] ever be a boy name? Does it seem feminine only? I guess it reminds me of [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] or [name_m]Clarence[/name_m] or [name_m]Horace[/name_m] or something. I think I would like [name_f]Florence[/name_f] on a boy but it doesn’t seem like it would be widely accepted.

These are my thoughts exactly.

Spanish has [name_m]Florencio[/name_m] and [name_f]Florencia[/name_f]. Italian has [name_m]Fiorenzo[/name_m] and [name_f]Fiorenza[/name_f]. Where’s the masculine equivalent of [name_f]Florence[/name_f]?

To me, e is the gender-neutral letter, like how [name_u]Claude[/name_u] is both masculine and feminine in [name_f]France[/name_f]. There have also been some male Florences in the past, though heavily outnumbered by the females.

It makes sense, but it wouldn’t be accepted by many. What about [name_m]Florent[/name_m]?

I actually like it, though I prefer on girls. While it can be a boys’ name unfortunately I don’t think the community would accept easily.

I would really like to see [name_f]Florence[/name_f] used for boys. You’re right, it does remind me of [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] and [name_m]Clarence[/name_m] and it’s a place name so I don’t see why it can’t be used for a boy.
[name_u]Florian[/name_u] is another option.

It was [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_u]Percy[/name_u] [name_u]Shelley[/name_u]’s son’s middle name:) I do quite like it on a boy

I can see it.

Florence on a boy is one of my gps. But Iam not brave enough to use it.

I like it, it definitely works. I actually thought it was a male name at first, I find the ending masculine sounding since it’s similar to [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] and [name_m]Clarence[/name_m]. I’d love to meet a male [name_f]Florence[/name_f], I think it’s quite handsome. It elicits images of flowers and vines for me without being frilly, and seems elegant while being strong and simple. I also adore the name [name_u]Florian[/name_u].

If I didn’t know about name trends, it would lean masculine for me. Reminds me of [name_u]Florian[/name_u].

I think it could transition well. [name_f]Florence[/name_f] —> [name_u]Florian[/name_u], etc. so I think it could work

Florence used to be a unisex name, but like [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_u]Hilary[/name_u] and [name_u]Joyce[/name_u], at some point it became (more or less) exclusively feminine.

Given how popular [name_f]Florence[/name_f] is in the UK and the lack of masculine namesakes, I find it hard to imagine on a boy. I think it would be a very brave choice.

It reminds me of those names, too, and with that in mind, as well as the place-name aspect, I think it could work as well as [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] or [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] for a boy, though probably only as a mn.

What you say makes sense, but I still can’t see it on a male. But I can see [name_m]Florent[/name_m] and [name_u]Florentine[/name_u] and [name_u]Florian[/name_u]!

I really can’t see it, sorry.

Florent and Florenz are the male version. But girls can have boys names and boys can have girl names if that’s what you want.

I think [name_f]Florence[/name_f] might be a bit too feminine for a boy. I also kind of like [name_m]Clarence[/name_m] on girls :see_no_evil: However, I had an uncle named [name_m]Florencio[/name_m], and I think it’s lovely. Also like [name_u]Florian[/name_u].

Firenze (the Italian name for [name_f]Florence[/name_f]) seems like a natural masculine alternative.

I agree with you - I like the idea of [name_f]Florence[/name_f] on a boy but it doesn’t feel like it’d be widely accepted.

I actually love the idea of [name_f]Florence[/name_f] on a boy! I think it’s be a really cool first or middle. Other more masculine forms of [name_f]Florence[/name_f] could be [name_u]Florian[/name_u], [name_m]Florin[/name_m], [name_m]Florek[/name_m] or [name_u]Florentine[/name_u]. I think it would be super cool and I actually have it as a middle for one of my boy combos and I have [name_u]Florian[/name_u] as a first too.

I know many names have made jumps between genders, but to be honest - that seems to only happen with traditionally male names now being used on girls. I can’t think of any off the top of my head that went from traditionally female to being used on boys. Unfortunately, I think this is the case with [name_f]Florence[/name_f]. It seems exclusively female, to me. Several famous people with the name [name_f]Florence[/name_f] such as [name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_u]Nightingale[/name_u], [name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_m]Henderson[/name_m], and [name_f]Florence[/name_f] from [name_f]Florence[/name_f] and the Machine are all women and the association with femininity is there. Some others have already suggested other similar names that are more widely accepted in use for males such as [name_u]Firenze[/name_u], [name_m]Florent[/name_m], and [name_u]Florian[/name_u]. I do think [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] is also the closest and is a great name.
