Florida/ocean/scuba diving boys name

We’re looking for additional ideas for a boys name. We live in [name_f]Florida[/name_f] and both love it here, so much so that our wedding had an old world [name_f]Florida[/name_f] theme. We both love the ocean and everything associated with it. My husband grew up fishing and diving since he was a little boy and I studied marine biology. We went on a diving trip for our honeymoon and go diving in the [name_f]Florida[/name_f] [name_m]Keys[/name_m] every year. We’re looking for a meaningful name that reflects our love for these things.

We’ve looked through all the traditional water and ocean lists and haven’t really liked those names. Here are our thoughts so far. We would love your input and to hear any other creative ideas you can come up with.

[name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_m]Westley[/name_m] - [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] key is considered the northernmost of the true [name_f]Florida[/name_f] [name_m]Keys[/name_m] and key west is the southernmost. We expanded [name_u]West[/name_u] to [name_m]Westley[/name_m] because we both loved the movie the princess bride growing up and used an instrumental version of the theme song in our wedding.

[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] - a waterfront park that my husband often fished at growing up

[name_m]Tide[/name_m] - if it weren’t for the detergent I would love this as a name. Would still consider for a middle. This is the best ocean term we’ve been able to come up with.

Stradic - name of a fishing reel my husband uses. He loves this name. I don’t like how it sounds with our last name since our last name starts with a C.

[name_u]Ray[/name_u] - we love stingrays and mantas but this doesn’t feel like a substantial enough name.

[name_u]Ridley[/name_u] - a species of sea turtle. Not sure we like the sound of it though.

Thanks for your input!

I love [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_m]Westley[/name_m]! I think it fits your theme well, without being over the top. I could also see [name_u]Ray[/name_u] as a nice middle name but maybe not as a first for you. There’s also the possibility of [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] as a middle name because of the [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] Sea, although I’m guessing you’ve already nixed that.

[name_m]Tide[/name_m] does make me think of the detergent, sadly. But if you love it, you should use it. I like the [name_u]Ray[/name_u] or [name_m]Westley[/name_m] connection better though. You could always just be direct and use [name_u]Ocean[/name_u] as a middle name, too.

What about [name_m]Jacques[/name_m] or Coustaeu? (My partner actually suggested this for you. She looked over my shoulder while I read your post, and she wanted to help because she also studied marine biology! She also suggested [name_f]Coral[/name_f] as a possible middle name.)

Generally speaking, I think [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_m]Westley[/name_m], [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_u]Ray[/name_u], or [name_m]Westley[/name_m] [name_u]Ray[/name_u] would all be fabulous choices.

I love [name_u]Ridley[/name_u]. [name_u]Ridley[/name_u] [name_m]Tide[/name_m] would be so cute. [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] is nice but seems a bit plain now.

[name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_m]Westley[/name_m] seems like a great option as it has personal meaning to you.
I also like the idea of [name_m]Wes[/name_m] [name_u]Elliott[/name_u].

Other names that come to mind:
[name_m]Hurley[/name_m] - sea tide
[name_f]Firth[/name_f] - arm of the sea (maybe [name_m]Westley[/name_m] [name_f]Firth[/name_f])
[name_m]Reef[/name_m] - ([name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_m]Reef[/name_m])
[name_m]Hoyt[/name_m] - sunken ship ([name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_m]Hoyt[/name_m])
[name_m]Davis[/name_m]

I love [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_m]Westley[/name_m] and it’s personal meaning to you! [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] is nice, I hear it more on girls than boys these days. [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Tide[/name_m] and [name_u]Ray[/name_u] as middles. Stradic is cool, but does sound like more of a brand name than a baby name. [name_u]Ridley[/name_u] is cute and the sea turtle association is great.

I had fun coming up with this list! [name_f]Florida[/name_f] is beautiful, we don’t live there but vacation there annually with our family. All the best!

It’s been some time since I’ve posted this, but I thought I would give an update for anyone reading through it. We very much appreciated all of the feedback and suggestions. Kelchristmas your list was great and gave us several new ideas.

We ended up going with [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_m]Westley[/name_m]. We loved how much meaning was behind the name and how [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] is recognizable but not overly popular. It fits our little boy well. The only problem we’ve had with the name is spelling. Many people use [name_u]Elliot[/name_u], but it has been a minor issue.

We are now expecting our second boy, so would appreciate any thoughts on a name for a brother to [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_m]Westley[/name_m].

What about [name_m]Keyes[/name_m] or [name_m]Keys[/name_m]? I know it’s a little out there, but if [name_m]Wells[/name_m] or [name_m]Brookes[/name_m] can be a useable (and in my opinion, adorable) first name, why not [name_m]Keys[/name_m]??

I think [name_m]Keys[/name_m] Stradic or [name_m]Keys[/name_m] [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] from your list are both very handsome choices. I also [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] a previous berries suggestion of [name_u]Florian[/name_u]! I think [name_m]Keys[/name_m] [name_u]Florian[/name_u] or [name_u]Florian[/name_u] [name_m]Keys[/name_m] are both dreamy!

Thanks for such a fun challenge!

Thanks for the suggestion! Since [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] is named after the [name_f]Florida[/name_f] keys, we were actually thinking [name_m]Keys[/name_m] might be a good option as a nickname for him when he got a bit older.

Diver here!

[name_f]Florida[/name_f] shipwrecks/dive sites:
[name_m]Emanuel[/name_m] ([name_m]Emanuel[/name_m] Point wreck. An old archeological site)
[name_m]Daniel[/name_m] (wreck of the [name_m]Captain[/name_m] [name_m]Dan[/name_m]. It was renamed this as a wreck after a well known fishing charter captian. It was originally the Hollyhock. Great penetration at this site btw)
Cromwell (The [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] Cromwell. It’s an old wreck. Not sure if people dive it, but it’s name material)
[name_m]George[/name_m] ([name_m]Georges[/name_m] [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]. Its an archeological preserve now)
[name_m]Isaac[/name_m] (the [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] Allerton)

[name_m]Duane[/name_m] (another keys wreck)
[name_m]John[/name_m] ([name_m]John[/name_m] Pennekamp coral reef state park. Not a wreck, but still cool)
[name_m]Peter[/name_m] (The [name_m]Peter[/name_m] B McAllister)

[name_f]Florida[/name_f] ocean place names:
Duval
[name_m]Franklin[/name_m]
[name_u]Monroe[/name_u]
[name_m]Ormond[/name_m]
[name_m]Williston[/name_m] (Central location, but there is cave diving here)

I love [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] and [name_u]Ridley[/name_u], and I think [name_m]Tide[/name_m] would be a cool middle! Maybe you’d also like [name_u]Wade[/name_u].

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_m]Westley[/name_m] and…

[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_u]Ray[/name_u]
[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_m]Tide[/name_m]
[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_u]Ridley[/name_u]

[name_u]Elliott[/name_u] and [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] are adorable together!

Great theme! I’m from up north, but went to they keys every year as a child. Such a cool unique place that I’m sure had an impact on personality.

I agree that [name_u]Emerson[/name_u], especially [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_u]Ridley[/name_u] sounds great with [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_m]Westley[/name_m]. I tend to associate Key [name_u]West[/name_u] with [name_m]Harry[/name_m] S. [name_m]Truman[/name_m] and [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] [name_m]Hemingway[/name_m], which could provide inspiration. [name_u]Love[/name_u] the suggestions of [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], Mariner, [name_f]Cypress[/name_f], [name_m]Reef[/name_m], [name_m]Cove[/name_m] and [name_u]Harbor[/name_u].

Angler could be a cool occupational choice. I like [name_u]Marlin[/name_u] but it may a little too literal for you. Not sure if you like the association, but I also think of [name_u]Storm[/name_u]. Waverly could be a similar mn to Westley.

[name_u]Ridley[/name_u] [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] seems like [name_f]Florida[/name_f] ocean name to me that would go well with [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_m]Westley[/name_m].

Also…
[name_m]Cove[/name_m]/[name_m]Cole[/name_m]
Tigh/[name_u]Tyler[/name_u]
[name_u]Wren[/name_u]
[name_m]Sol[/name_m]/Sole
[name_u]Blue[/name_u]/[name_u]Bo[/name_u]
[name_m]Heath[/name_m]
[name_m]Wilder[/name_m]
[name_m]Ryder[/name_m]
Bhodi
Somerled

[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_m]Tide[/name_m] is super stinkin’ cute. I also think of [name_m]Reeves[/name_m], [name_u]Reed[/name_u], [name_u]Wade[/name_u], [name_u]Ocean[/name_u], [name_m]Cove[/name_m] [love!!].

Thank you all for the feedback and wonderful suggestions. I love the creativity. You’ve come up with lots of options we haven’t thought of yet. [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] is definitely our front runner right now.

We also came up with some other ideas I was hoping to get feedback on.

[name_m]Alon[/name_m] is a Filipino word that means wave. We like this for a number of reasons. First, the Philippines is in the coral triangle, the area of the highest biodiversity of coral in the world and the region where we went diving for our honeymoon. Second, the meaning wave is similar to the meaning of my name, which means white wave. We just wonder if this is too unusual sounding? Perhaps it would be good as a middle name?

[name_m]Sean[/name_m], while not directly having an ocean meaning does have sea right in the name and I like the sound of it. It is also the Irish variant of [name_m]John[/name_m] and [name_m]John[/name_m] is a common name in my family. We don’t have much Irish heritage in our family though. Too far fetched?

[name_u]Elliot[/name_u] [name_m]Westley[/name_m]/ [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] is best of your options
[name_u]Murray[/name_u] I think is worth consideration for its meaning and is underused I think, really solid but also nice on a little one as well. also includes ray and mur / mer for the sea obviously.
[name_u]Murray[/name_u] [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] or [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] [name_u]Murray[/name_u]?
