Not trees or herbs, not even if they flower (so [name_m]Basil[/name_m] or [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m] are no.) Not regular names that are included in flower names (so no Sweet [name_m]William[/name_m] or Creeping [name_u]Charlie[/name_u].) Not names that just mean flower or something (so no [name_u]Florian[/name_u] or [name_f]Florence[/name_f].) And only English forms (no [name_m]Jacinto[/name_m].) it’s a challenge, I know, but it’s very important to us that the name is clearly and distinctly floral.
We’ve found [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f], but it seems to have gone feminine. There’s also [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f], but that’s so overbearing for a child (and we’d probably misspell it on the birth certificate.) We like [name_f]Orchid[/name_f], but we’re not sure how it reads gender-wise. We also like [name_f]Lavender[/name_f], but that’s pretty strictly feminine; same with [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] and [name_f]Daffodil[/name_f].
I know [name_f]Hyacinthe[/name_f] is mostly a masculine name in [name_f]France[/name_f] (unisex now). I would use it on a boy. We also have [name_f]Jasmin[/name_f] ([name_f]Jasmin[/name_f] and [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] have different pronunciations in [name_m]French[/name_m]).
[name_u]Sorrel[/name_u] is also a flower.
Aster has a masculine feel to me
Bergamot
Carnation (nn Carney would be adorable)
Columbine
Crocus (nn Crow :))
Edelweiss (nn Weiss)
Foxglove
Lupin
Rhododendron though probably almost as hard to spell as Chrysanthemum
Looked up some uncommon ones:
Coreopsis
Erigeron
Iberis
Mallow
Nerine
Also, there’s really no scientific/biological difference between flowers and herbs. If you’re looking for cultural differences, I can understand, but even Hyacinths can be used as herbs.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] all the suggestions here, [name_f]Aster[/name_f] and [name_f]Jonquil[/name_f] have always seemed masculine to me, same with a lot of the other ones suggested!! I love flower names for boys ^^
Also agree about the herbs, plenty of them have flowers and I don’t think they should be ruled out just because they also taste good…
Seconding Foxglove, [name_f]Columbine[/name_f], Lupin, [name_f]Garland[/name_f], [name_m]Heath[/name_m] and Crocus!
[name_u]Sorrel[/name_u], Vervain, and Larkspur are the most obvious choices to me…Otherwise maybe
[name_f]Clematis[/name_f] ([name_u]Clem[/name_u] or [name_u]Mat[/name_u])
Gentian
Sedum
[name_f]Shasta[/name_f] (after the [name_f]Shasta[/name_f] daisy, not the mountain)
[name_m]William[/name_m] (after Sweet [name_m]William[/name_m] - not as obviously a flower name, but it does count!)
Allium
[name_u]Yarrow[/name_u]
Hosta
I probably wouldn’t go for Foxglove as a name, but would you consider [name_m]Fox[/name_m]?
[name_m]Cosmo[/name_m] or Cosmos
Dianthus
Amaranth
Coleus
Vinca
Oleander
[name_m]Adonis[/name_m] (scientific name for the flowers of the crowfoot family)
Hyssop
Helianthus
[name_u]Bay[/name_u]
Mallow
Ocotillo (prn Oco-tee-oh)
Some ones that I don’t think have been said:
Thistle
[name_f]Columbine[/name_f]
Gentian
[name_f]Ginger[/name_f]
Amarath
Guelder (guelder rose)
Lisianthus
Monkshood
Scabious
Speedwell
Statice
[name_f]Tansy[/name_f]
I like the suggestions of [name_f]Aster[/name_f], [name_u]Quince[/name_u], Mallow, Lupin, Arum, [name_f]Holly[/name_f], [name_f]Orchid[/name_f] and Phlox.
[name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f]
Canterbury (Bells) - another name for [name_u]Bell[/name_u] [name_f]Flower[/name_f]'s
[name_f]Daffodil[/name_f] nn [name_u]Daffy[/name_u] or Dil
[name_f]Peony[/name_f]
Cosmos
Dill - not the most obvious but also a flower
[name_f]Tansy[/name_f]
Thistle
[name_f]Freesia[/name_f]
[name_f]Hebe[/name_f]
Hollyhock - more masculine than plain holly and he could go by [name_m]Hawk[/name_m]
Hosta
Ilex
[name_f]Lotus[/name_f]
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Noa[/name_f] - this is actually on my list for girls but could also work for a boy
[name_f]Viola[/name_f]
Spraxis (Wandflower)
[name_f]Zenobia[/name_f]
