Help! I am terrible at coming up with boy names. The problem is, I usually don’t like ANY of them. The name I loved and had picked out for years was [name]Leo[/name], my great-grandfather’s name. Now everybody else has figured out what a great name it is, and I can’t bring myself to use it. I’m not one of those people who will forever regret not using a name. Once it gets too popular - I’m done. Hands washed. I think it’s because I’m an [name]Ashley[/name]. Anyway…
So, I’m back to square one. I’m excited to pick out new boy names, but I just don’t know where to go.
I found myself on the 70’s folk rock station on [name]Pandora[/name] today, and it got me thinking. I do like a lot of the artist names that popped up. For example, [name]Guthrie[/name], [name]Arlo[/name], [name]Woody[/name], and even thought it didn’t pop up, [name]Redding[/name] seems to be similar in style.
What are some more names of this type? I have a feeling I might really like them, but I can’t really think of any on my own.
You liked [name]Otis[/name] at some point didn’t you? I really really like [name]Otis[/name], sounds so cool! Not at all popular (I think), but not unfamiliar either.
I love that [name]Leo[/name] is your grandfathers name and while its more popular now then it has been (I know 2 actually under the age of 4) its not of the [name]Ashley[/name] popularity. (I too get the “is it too popular?” bug in my head being a [name]Jennifer[/name]…and while [name]Sebastian[/name] and [name]Violet[/name] are both popular in some sense, irl I can count on one hand the number I have met since having either of them…)
[name]Otto[/name] is cute and fits like [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Otis[/name] rolled into one. I love [name]Arlo[/name], have been trying to get DH on board with this one but he doesnt like it with our last name.
[name]Ansel[/name] is of that vein, a very strong handsome name that it hardly ever used (it was on my list during Vio’s pregnancy, I had the combo [name]Ansel[/name] [name]Arden[/name] chosen if in fact I had a boy and he “looked” like this name as we did not know her gender until after birth) and that totally fits with what you are thinking of in a name. Artistic of course, not officially “folksy” unless you count American photography around that time.
I don’t think [name]Leo[/name] is that popular, but if that is how you feel, how about [name]Lionel[/name]? It still has a similar feel and meaning as [name]Leo[/name] and in a way still honors your great-grandfather.
Thanks guys! I [name]DO[/name] adore [name]Otis[/name], but it has gotten a less than favorable reception - although that doesn’t deter me much. I’m also loving [name]Otto[/name], [name]Lionel[/name], [name]Fleetwood[/name], (BIG [name]Mac[/name] fan here,) Woods, and [name]Creed[/name] (although [name]Creed[/name] from The Office may keep me from actually using it.) [name]Do[/name] you think [name]Fleetwood[/name] is too… much?
I love [name]Fleetwood[/name]! As a first name though, it might be too much for the general population. Sure people would get used to it, but it seems a little weighty for a kid. ([name]Even[/name] though the kid will be an adult for the large majority of his life!) Woods like you mentioned is fitting for the years, though. I love [name]Fleetwood[/name] [name]Mac[/name], my oldest was singing “Landslide” the other day, and I cried, it was so beautiful even though he was just cleaning his room while he sang it…that song always gets me!
[name]Creed[/name] the band would keep me from the name before [name]Creed[/name] from the office would, although, he is one of our (DH’s and I’s) favoriate characters…not somebody we want our child to model after of course, but, still, its a pretty cool name.
People really do not like [name]Otis[/name]? I think of the movie “[name]Milo[/name] and [name]Otis[/name]” and that is pretty much it. ([name]Otis[/name] Spunkmyer cookies were sold in my high school cafeteria, but that might be more of a reginal thing) Certainly didnt stop anybody from using [name]Milo[/name], and, that movie is really cute too. (My kids went through an “animal doing people things/talking like people” phase a few years ago so I will admit to having watched it recently as an adult, still cute!) Granted all my boys have “well known character” names, so its not something that I worry about in general. My grandmother’s brother is named [name]Otis[/name], and I would have maybe considered it had I not had one in the family (and not be a close family member, so it would have been awkward if that makes sense) .
[name]Neville[/name]. An old boyfriend and I had silly alter egos named [name]Neville[/name] and [name]Millicent[/name], so I thought of this for you with your love of [name]Millicent[/name] - plus the [name]Neville[/name] Brothers connection.
