Formal name for NN Sasha...need clever suggestions please baby due soon!

DH and I have a son, [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] (only called [name_u]Alex[/name_u]) and are due with a daughter.

The only name we both love is [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] but that is the Russian NN for [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and after posting a thread it appears this is common knowledge (damn!)

So what is a name we can call our daughter and use [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] as a NN that is NOT [name_f]Natasha[/name_f] but won’t make people go how on earth did you come up with [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] as a NN for that!?

That said DH did say last night he didn’t mind [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] (NN [name_f]Evy[/name_f]) so maybe we will go with that if we can’t agree on a formal name for [name_u]Sasha[/name_u].

[name_u]Sasha[/name_u] is very cute. I am not a [name_f]Natasha[/name_f] fan either.
Honestly, [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] sounds a lot different than [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and [name_u]Alex[/name_u]. I understand the [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] and [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] connection, but they sound so different that if I loved [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] That much, I would use it anyways.
Or use [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_u]Sasha[/name_u].

[name_f]Anastasia[/name_f]
[name_f]Asha[/name_f]
S___ Sh___= [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_u]Shae[/name_u] ?
[name_f]Ashanti[/name_f]

[name_u]Sasha[/name_u] could be a name in its own right honestly. I suppose it could be short for [name_f]Alessandra[/name_f] or [name_f]Serafina[/name_f]. But frankly I would just go with [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] by itself if you like it a lot. [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] has a nice ring to it.

I didn’t know it was connected to [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]. I’d honestly still use it. I can’t really think of any longer names for it

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Shoshana[/name_f]?

Common knowledge on Nameberry doesn’t always equate to common knowledge in real life

That being said, if you love [name_u]Sasha[/name_u], I’d go for it. Most folks probably won’t know the connection, and even if they do, will it be a big deal? Probably not as much as if you had two children named [name_m]William[/name_m] and [name_m]Bill[/name_m], for example.

[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] is pretty, I like the combination [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] or [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u].

[name_m]Just[/name_m] use [name_u]Sasha[/name_u]. I’m American and did not see the connection between [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] and [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]. Go for it!

Have you considered [name_f]Dasha[/name_f]/[name_f]Dacia[/name_f] or [name_m]Yasha[/name_m]? Or you could go with the spelling Zasha instead of [name_u]Sasha[/name_u].

[name_u]Sasha[/name_u] could be a nn for [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] (if pronounced ‘ca-SAHN-dra’)

Why does [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] have to be a nickname? I went to high school with a girl named [name_f]Saskia[/name_f] who preferred to be called [name_u]Sasha[/name_u]. She said it was easier. I like [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] on its own.

Because our sons name is [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] which is the formal name of the NN [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] in Russian.

Well I polled some friends and not one of them knew. I have very smart friends so I was comforted by that. [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] with [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] is an idea!

I don’t think the [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]/[name_u]Sasha[/name_u] connection is a problem. My cousin’s daughter [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] gets called [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] which I think evolved from the Cha/Sha sound at the beginning.

Is the [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]/[name_u]Sasha[/name_u] connection COMMON knowledge? No. Is it obvious? No. But is it REAL and [name_u]TRUE[/name_u]? Yes. (As real and true as [name_m]Bill[/name_m] being a nickname for [name_m]William[/name_m], an example cited here, or to use a less obvious but maybe more appropriate example, [name_f]Peggy[/name_f] being derived from [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].)

Listen, if [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] is the name you love best, I think it’s far enough away in sound from [name_u]Alex[/name_u] and the connection is so tenuous is the US that you can get away with calling your daughter [name_u]Sasha[/name_u]. And while [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] can stand on its own as a name, maybe considering the circumstances you should give her a more formal name that is different from both [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] and [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]/[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f], which seems to be your impulse.

I love a lot of the ideas here – [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f], [name_f]Saskia[/name_f], [name_f]Shoshanna[/name_f], even [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. Given that you’re looking for something with a sound and not a historic or etymological connection, really anything with that S or SH or CH sound can work. Some other ideas: [name_f]Acacia[/name_f], [name_f]Cassia[/name_f], [name_f]Aisha[/name_f], even [name_f]Letitia[/name_f].

I love the name [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] and the name sascha. Personally think they are far away apart to be a problem and sound great together. The only problem is if you decide to move to [name_f]Russia[/name_f]! Otherwise I think it’s a nice connection between brother and sister.
If you want to use a longer name I guess you could consider sharlene, safiah, saffron… Or the others already mentioned. I also had a friend called [name_f]Saskia[/name_f].
I would go for [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] though

I would not use [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] for a sister of [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], as a nickname or a given name. It is irrelevant whether or not the connection is common knowledge. The fact is, Sasha is nickname for males named Alexander. If [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] is a name which you and your husband agree on, I suggest you use it. Personally, I would feel insulted if my parents did not bother to give me a proper name but instead named me a nickname of my brother’s name.

My favorite thing about names is how they evolve. They move from this to that in the blink of an eye. For instance, did you know that [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] was a boys name until 1933, when it sort of fell off the boys usage list. Changes and movements are meant to happen with names, otherwise we would all be called [name_f]Agrippina[/name_f] or Blandus. I say start a revolution. In [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u], [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] can clearly be a girls name with its lovely feminine sound. Go for it.

I tried to appease others when I named my son in 2007. Nobody had heard of [name_m]Bastien[/name_m], so I decided to name him [name_m]Sebastien[/name_m] and NN him [name_m]Bastien[/name_m]. Well now he gets confused about his name, and I love the name I picked, but everyone else uses his full name.

If you love something, use it. The name will become them the longer they have it. I think it is a great direction for [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] to go, and I’m glad to hear someone wants to start the movement!

I’m of Russian descent, and love Russian history, so yes, I know the [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]/[name_u]Sasha[/name_u] connection. There have been some great suggestions in this thread : [name_f]Shoshana[/name_f], [name_f]Saskia[/name_f], …

[name_f]Susan[/name_f]

I personally don’t think it matters if [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] is a full name or a nick name, it still seems odd that one of your children is called Sahsa and one is called [name_u]Alex[/name_u] when they are both nicknames for the same name. It’s like naming one child [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and the other [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] and nicknaming [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Peggy[/name_f] and [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f], [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]. You still end up with [name_f]Peggy[/name_f] and [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] which are both commonly known nn’s for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. If you are set on using [name_u]Sasha[/name_u], and are going to call her [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] all the time any way, I’d just stick with [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] as a full name as trying to come up with a name for it to be a nn for besides [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] seems forced. That being said, I personally wouldn’t use it because it is a fairly well known connection even outside of nameberry. However, it’s your child so if you really want to name her [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] go for it. [name_m]Just[/name_m] know that other people will find it odd.

I personally think that [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] is a beautiful name.

If you’re planning to call her [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] regardless of what her formal name is, I suggest you just name her [name_u]Sasha[/name_u]. Or [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] :stuck_out_tongue:

If you’re really put off by [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] being a nn for [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], why not [name_f]Zosia[/name_f]?

I really dont understand how [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] comes from [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] at all. Plus, [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] is a girls name.

Anyway, as for longer versions…I really dont know. I like [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] as a name on its own
