Formal name for "Tuck"?

My husband and I welcomed our baby boy a couple of months ago and after much deliberation (and not being able to agree on any other names), we decided we both loved the name “Tuck”. We agreed we name him Tuck and would choose a longer, more formal name for him once we were out of the hospital.

I quite like “Tucker” and my husband is a fan of “Atticus” (nice but kind of out of the question for me.) We have even thought of naming him “Thomas” and calling him Tuck, as Thomas would give him a classic standby if he chooses to have a more formal, less trendy name as he gets older.

Does anyone have any other suggestions on how we might lengthen his name? Any alternatives out there that I may have not thought of?

Also, any thoughts on giving a child one name and calling him something else (i.e.: naming him Thomas but calling him Tuck)? I never thought I would go back and forth on a name so much!!

Tuxedo!

Haha, no, I’m only kidding. I think [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Tucker[/name_m] are all good choices. [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] would probably be my favorite, as it’s the least trendy of the three.

The only other name I can think of that incorporates some of the sounds is [name_m]Thackeray[/name_m].

I really love the idea of naming him [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and calling him [name_m]Tuck[/name_m]. I think that’s just adorable and he’ll have a more classic name to go by when he’s older if he chooses.

I agree with @mnmemily15, [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] nn [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] is amazing - you cannot go wrong with a classic name with a more unusual nickname, in my opinion. I think any name beginning with T would be fair game, though.

I like [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]/[name_m]Tuck[/name_m] too  [name_f]IMO[/name_f] there isn’t anything wrong with naming a child one thing and calling them another. I think this happens quite frequently with middle names. I actually know someone called [name_f]Annalie[/name_f] but her legal name is [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]. Her mother wanted to name her [name_f]Annalie[/name_f] but her father on his way to filling out the paperwork decided that [name_f]Annalie[/name_f] wasn’t a good name for an older lady so he registered her as [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]. Her mother was mad of course and insisted upon calling her [name_f]Annalie[/name_f]! haha (she was born in the 50’s btw). If you think about it parents give the silliest nick names for their kids sometimes that aren’t even names at all so why shouldn’t you be able to call them by a nn that is an actual name?

I also love [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] “[name_m]Tuck[/name_m]”. He may go by [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] is whole life but he will have a great, classic name to fall back on if he ever wishes to do so.

Another vote for [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]/[name_m]Tuck[/name_m].

Team [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]/[name_m]Tuck[/name_m]!

My favourite is definitely [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] nn [name_m]Tuck[/name_m]., I like the idea of having a formal classic name and an unexpected nickname. [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] nn [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] is clever as well.

Ahh [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] nn [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] is so cute!

I love the idea of [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] (who doesn’t love Mr. [name_u]Finch[/name_u]?), but I can’t get over the bulkiness of the name. [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] certainly resolves that issue, though–it’s cute, sporty, and lively!

Thank you all very much for your advice!

Believe it or not, we have been hesitant to select his formal name even now as he is eight months old as we still cannot decide! We are coming down to the wire, however, as he is due to be christened in a couple of months and I need to write his formal name on his baptismal form!

I like the idea of [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] as it is so classic, but my hesitation is that “[name_m]Tom[/name_m]” is not my fav name.

I like [name_m]Tucker[/name_m] too but feel he won’t have any option if he doesn’t like [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] as he grows older and more mature.

So… Are there any other “T” names or other options I’m missing? [name_m]Timothy[/name_m], [name_m]Terrence[/name_m], Shattuck, etc.?

I know I’m totally overthinking this!

[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] nicknamed [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] is wonderful!! And if he goes by [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] for everything, the nn [name_m]Tom[/name_m] likely won’t even come up. When he’s introduced by you, and later himself, as [name_m]Tuck[/name_m], and enrolled in school with [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] as his formal name and [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] as his nickname (a lot of places use forms that ask for your preferred nickname, my schools all did) [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] will very much be his name.
It’s kinda like how I’m [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] but have ALWAYS been called [name_f]Katie[/name_f] or [name_f]Kate[/name_f]. Never once has someone seen/heard my formal name and called me [name_f]Kat[/name_f] or [name_f]Kathy[/name_f], especially if they know neither of those is the nickname I go by. I don’t think you’ll have a problem of people meeting your boy [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] and calling him [name_m]Tom[/name_m].

I am with your husband on loving [name_m]Atticus[/name_m]. [name_m]Tucker[/name_m] is very sweet and unusual. I personally don’t like the idea of using [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] for [name_m]Tuck[/name_m]. It doesn’t fit as well as [name_m]Tom[/name_m], so he will be called [name_m]Tom[/name_m] more often than [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] as he grows older. I think [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] will fall right off by the time he’s an adult if you go with [name_m]Thomas[/name_m].

Since [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] rhymes with a bad word, I think it would be wise to use a more formal name on the birth certificate. We live most of our lives as adults and I can’t imagine a grown up with the cutesy name of [name_m]Tuck[/name_m]. I love [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Timothy[/name_m] with the nn of [name_m]Tuck[/name_m]. Another full-name option is [name_m]Truman[/name_m].

I like [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]/[name_m]Tuck[/name_m] to be honest my first thought was [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]

I like Thomas with nn Tuck!! How cute!! I am a fan of naming a child what you plan on calling them, less confusion. However, I really like this. I like Atticus with the nn tuck as well. I loved the suggestion of Thackeray, how fun!!

Add on… A girl I went to high school with named her son Zackary and called him Gunner. And oddly enough it works.

Maybe not your style, but [name_m]Leviticus[/name_m] would also work. Obscure biblical names are actually catching on. I know a 3 year old [name_m]Lazarus[/name_m] and a 10 year old [name_m]Moses[/name_m].

[name_m]Leviticus[/name_m] is really neat! See- I never would have thought of that! I like that he could use the name [name_m]Levi[/name_m] later in life if he decides to do so. It’s a somewhat heavy name so, both in its sound and in its history.

Shannagrace, it’s funny what you say about [name_m]Zachary[/name_m] nn [name_m]Gunner[/name_m]. I’ve been wanting to just call him [name_m]William[/name_m] and give him the nickname [name_m]Tuck[/name_m]! However, my husband wishes to give him a formal name using the letter “T.”

This is so silly that we still haven’t found a name for our sweet little boy. As he is our third boy, however, we quite simply just ran out of ideas. And I do take this really seriously because it’s his name… for what I hope will be a very long time.

So…

We still have not decided on a formal name. You all have given such wonderful suggestions. We are closest to [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]/ [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] but my husband and I am just not in love with the name [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. (Maybe with our 3rd boy we won’t find a name we’re in love with anyway.)

So now, our options are [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] nn [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] and [name_m]Tucker[/name_m] nn [name_m]Tuck[/name_m]. [name_f]My[/name_f] hesitation with [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] is the name confusion issue and the fact that [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] is not our fav name. [name_f]My[/name_f] hesitation with [name_m]Tucker[/name_m] is that it’s a trendy name and he may like to utilize a classic name later in life. We’ve also thought of [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] nn [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] but I think that is a bit of a stretch. We have tossed around the idea of giving him a completely unrelated formal name (not starting with the letter “T”- for example, [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]) but use the nickname [name_m]Tuck[/name_m]… I have steered away from this a bit because I think it might be altogether very confusing say, in a doctor’s office or more formal settings where he has to use his formal name for legal purposes.

He is getting christened this upcoming weekend. A formal name would be awesome and I feel the pressure is on. Any final thoughts to help would be greatly appreciated! The cake might just say, “God Bless ____ !”

I wouldn’t worry about confusion with Thomas nn Tuck as most classic names have lots of nicknames that don’t seem to relate (think Henry nn Hal or Mary nn Polly) people can usually handle it! But if it still bothers you I would suggest…
