We are pregnant and are trying to think of a middle name to go with the girl name we chose. We would like to use my grandfathers first name as the middle name, [name_u]Francis[/name_u]. Since we would name her after him, we are trying to decide if we should use the girl spelling, [name_f]Frances[/name_f], or the boy version, [name_u]Francis[/name_u]. Thoughts???
For a girl, I would go with [name_f]Frances[/name_f]!
Agree. I would choose [name_f]Frances[/name_f] It still very clearly honors him.
[name_f]Frances[/name_f], definitely. I agree the honor still shines through perfectly.
I think [name_f]Frances[/name_f] is lovely congratulations!
Another vote for [name_f]Frances[/name_f]–I much prefer this spelling for a girl, and I don’t think it makes the lovely honor connection any less strong!
[name_f]Frances[/name_f]!
Both my grandparents are [name_u]Francis[/name_u]/[name_f]Frances[/name_f] so my preferred spelling for a girl would be [name_f]Frances[/name_f] (also have a girl cousin named after them that spells it [name_f]Frances[/name_f]).
Definitely not as big a deal as a middle name, but I would still try to stick to the E spelling. I think it’s pretty obvious who she’s named after because the pronunciation doesn’t change at all. But she also has a little bit of her own identity, which I like.
[name_f]My[/name_f] older sister’s middle name is [name_f]Frances[/name_f] and she was named after our grandfather, whose middle name was [name_u]Francis[/name_u].
[name_f]Frances[/name_f] is great!!
I also think [name_f]Frances[/name_f] (g) and [name_u]Francis[/name_u] (b), and since they’re so close, [name_f]Frances[/name_f] quite clearly honours a [name_u]Francis[/name_u]. It’s a lovely name!
I much prefer [name_f]Frances[/name_f] for a girl. It’s a lovely name.
[name_f]Frances[/name_f] all the way!
[name_f]Frances[/name_f] would be better.
I think it’d be totally okay to spell it with an I, especially in the middle spot. [name_f]My[/name_f] middle name is [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] spelled [name_f]Gwinn[/name_f] because it’s a family name.
Since its the middle name I think [name_u]Francis[/name_u] is the best way to go after all.
Girl version
I would use [name_f]Frances[/name_f], I think it’s still a perfectly obvious honor name, even if you’re using the feminine form.
For a girl definitely go with [name_f]Frances[/name_f] it’s really vintage & pretty. Also I think using the feminine spelling [name_f]Frances[/name_f] works better for a girl and would honour your relative perfectly
I’d go with [name_f]Frances[/name_f]. If he’d been named [name_m]Henry[/name_m], [name_m]Harry[/name_m] or [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] you’d probably go for [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] or [name_f]Danielle[/name_f] and no one would bat an eye or say it ‘wasn’t really an honour’ name because you changed it to the spelling most associated with that sex.
[name_f]Frances[/name_f] is lovely!
