Frances or Rosemary

Hello hello!

I am 27 weeks and team green. I have two children (Shepherd 4yo boy, [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] 2 year old girl).

I am set for a boy name but struggling between two for a girl.

[name_f]Frances[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f].

Would call her [name_f]Frankie[/name_f] or [name_f]Romy[/name_f] or [name_f]Ro[/name_f].

[name_f]Love[/name_f] both of the names dearly, [name_f]Frances[/name_f] is my grandmothers middle name and she is currently on hospice and dying soon, would be a nice honor name.

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband does not love [name_f]Frances[/name_f] and I also worry if she would be teased in grade school for an “old lady” name haha. I have a tendency to over think things… sooo… opinions?

I love [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] ‘Romy’ / ‘Ro’ for you - is it possible to use [name_f]Frances[/name_f] as a middle? [name_m]Or[/name_m] ‘update’ it but considering [name_f]Francesca[/name_f]?

[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] would get my vote but I could see why you’d want to use [name_f]Frances[/name_f].

I wouldn’t worry about bullying as children will find anything to bully over regardless of a persons name, however if your husband isn’t keen though that makes things tricky, could you maybe do was Greyblue has suggested & use [name_f]Frances[/name_f] as a MN or use something like [name_f]Francesca[/name_f], [name_f]Francine[/name_f], Francena, Frankie-Rose etc.

[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] is my vote as well, but I agree that [name_f]Frances[/name_f] could make a great middle name! [name_m]Or[/name_m] maybe you could use your grandmother’s first name instead?
Some more alternatives to [name_f]Frances[/name_f] (as firsts or middles): [name_f]Frankie[/name_f], [name_f]Fern[/name_f], [name_f]Francie[/name_f], [name_f]Francine[/name_f]

I love [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], especially with the nickname [name_f]Romy[/name_f]! [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m], [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] sound so beautiful together, too.

I don’t think you need to worry about [name_f]Frances[/name_f] being teased for being an “old lady” name — “old lady” names seem to be very in at the moment! The nn [name_f]Frankie[/name_f] helps to make her feel a lot more youthful as well. I think [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] would be a gorgeous combo and a lovely way to honour your grandmother.

[name_m]Welcome[/name_m] to Nameberry!

I’d go with [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f]. You can keep the honor name and ensure both of you are on board with the first name. That said, I know a few young children named [name_f]Frances[/name_f], so I don’t find it too old lady at all.

I love [name_f]Frances[/name_f]. I think it’s spunky and ready for a comeback. [name_f]Love[/name_f] the nickname “Fern”.

Wow thank you all for the responses!

In my heart I love [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] but also see how [name_f]Frances[/name_f] could be special and unique as well.

In my head I had “Lou” as a middle name because my mom called me lou lou growing up and I think “Romy Lou” is just about as adorable as it gets! Also my other children have 1 syllable middle names and I feel like I need to continue that? no??

But my eyes have def opened to [name_f]Frances[/name_f] as a middle name.

They both work, but if your husband really doesn’t like Frances, you should go with Rosemary.

Shepherd, Cecilia, and Rosemary are a very nice sibling set. They go together perfectly :two_hearts:

I know of two or three kids who have nicknames like ___ [name_f]Lou[/name_f] without any “lou” related names at all, so I think you could still call her [name_f]Romy[/name_f] [name_f]Lou[/name_f] if you wanted to! Also maybe something like [name_f]Romy[/name_f] [name_f]Fran[/name_f], [name_f]Romy[/name_f] [name_f]France[/name_f], or [name_f]Romy[/name_f] [name_f]Faye[/name_f] (kinda stretchy) as a double nn for [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f]? I also don’t think there would be any expectation to continue the one syllable middle name pattern if you don’t want to. I normally subscribe to the “two is a coincidence, three is a pattern” line of thought for sibling themes.

[name_f]Frances[/name_f] is a family name for me as well and on my list :yellow_heart: such a lovely lovely name!

However, [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] is such a perfect match with your kids names, and [name_f]Romy[/name_f] [name_f]Lou[/name_f] is adorable.

I think my vote goes to [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] and still keeping [name_f]Romy[/name_f] [name_f]Lou[/name_f] as a nickname! Whatever you choose, you can’t go wrong.

Congratulations :tada:

Firstly I absolutely love your kiddos names they are gorgeous! I also adore your shortlist both [name_f]Frances[/name_f] + [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] are beautiful names.

[name_f]Frances[/name_f] is such a lovely name she’s wholesome, with pretty cottagecore imagery and [name_f]Frankie[/name_f] gives a fun youthful edge. Personally I do not think [name_f]Frances[/name_f] is too ‘old lady’ I actually know [name_f]Frances[/name_f] of different ages including a 5 year old boy named Franc1s and a 10 year old girl named [name_f]Frances[/name_f]. I think she’s such a timeless choice that suits a variety of different ages rather than just ‘old ladies’ I also lovely the whimsy flair of [name_f]Frances[/name_f] with your kiddos. I think the sentimental value of this choice is also sweet. You could also add a more modern flair by using [name_f]Francesca[/name_f]!

[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] is beautiful! [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is one of my absolute favourite names and I adore her she’s romantic, classic, has beautiful floral connotations and feels warm. Along with loving [name_f]Rose[/name_f] I adore all her variants including [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]. I love the outdoorsy wholesome feel of this name, the pretty connotations surrounding the sea and flowers along with fun spunky nicknames.

I would probably go [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] :rose::ocean:

[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] nn [name_f]Romy[/name_f] gets my vote :white_heart: she goes so well with her siblings names :tulip:

I’m so sorry to hear about your grandma

I love Frances.
Maybe Francine or Francesca ? It adds honor with a modern twist for a name with feminine flair ??

Possible nn

I love [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] with siblings [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] and [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], and I adore the nn [name_f]Romy[/name_f] for her! I can see why you’d feel so stuck though. I agree with others to use Frances/an honor name for [name_f]Frances[/name_f] in the middle spot! Perhaps [name_f]Fran[/name_f] to stick with the 1 syllable middle name theme! [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Fran[/name_f] “Romy” would be absolutely darling!!!

Also agree that you could still call her [name_f]Romy[/name_f] [name_f]Lou[/name_f] without her having “Lou” in her name anywhere, but [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Lou[/name_f] would be a great choice as well if you were deadset on it!

This! I call my oldest _____-lou though her middle name is violet. So you could 100% name her Rosemay Frances and still call her Romy-lou.

As for continuing the 1 syllable middle. If its really important to you I think you should do it, however no one else is probably going to know or notice. (Including your own children, in writing this post I just realized out of the 3 of my siblings 2 have 1 syllable middles that start with a B and one doesnt, but tbh Ive really given it much thought)

That’s hard because I really like both of them! I think I would go with [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] and I like the idea of [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] too.

My daughter is Will@ Fr@nces, and she was going to be called Rosemary and I’ve been attached to Cecilia since reading Atonement - so seems we have similar tastes!

My thoughts:

Frances - its tailored, literary, earnest, dreamy feel is so delightful. I think it’s such a perfect, clipped name and I can see it on a writer and general thinker. If I’d used in first spot - and I sometimes wish I did - I would have used nn Franny or Francy/Francie. I really don’t like Frankie - I have two cousins who have daughters called Frankie and it just sounds honky and harsh to me, thanks to the K, and too trendy. I prefer the vintage sweetness of Frances and Franny/Francie or even Fern.

Another option - which I really love - is Francine. Gosh I love that name! I don’t see either as old lady or no more so that Cecilia and Rosemary - and by that I mean, they come from the same genre of lovely storybook names and if anything Rosemary has a more nostalgic vibe to me.

Rosemary - gives all sorts of sensual images of flowers, herbs and gardens etc. It has the visual length of your other two names (even though Frances is as long as Cecilia it doesn’t look like it is!). It gives the fab nickname Romy, which is also a fave name of mine. We didn’t go Rosemary because by bad luck my mum had a bully at work at the time with the name - she didn’t try to talk me out of using it but she went ashen faced when I mentioned the name. That and I don’t like how some people say Rose-Mary and some say RoseMree - the second is hard to say with our last name. But I still highly rate the name! Rosemary Frances would be beautiful. (Or Rosemary Louise?)

I would go Rosemary if you’re especially attached to Romy/Ro (and OK with Rosie), and Frances/Francine if you want that more tailored feel. For me, Frances/Francine has the edge but I really warm to the persona I have in my mind of this little gal with this name…and from what you’ve said, you’re probably going to get more of what you want from Rosemary?

Oh, and I don’t think you need to continue one syllable middle. You can - but think of how little you see your name in relation to your siblings, it won’t matter to them, really. I get the instinct to want the pattern but I think honouring your grandmother would be lovely and a more important story and connection for your daughter.

Hope this helps. :ribbon:

[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] would be so cute! I wouldn’t go for [name_f]Frances[/name_f] as a first since your husband doesn’t love it, so unless you have another honor middle name in mind, [name_f]Frances[/name_f] would be perfect to go in the middle!
