French-Canadian Boy names

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Berries!

I’m currently re-reading my favourite [name_m]French[/name_m]-Canadian trilogy, [name_u]Les[/name_u] Filles de [name_m]Caleb[/name_m]. It takes place in various towns in Québec from 1892-1946. Here are the boys’ names used in the books :

[name_m]Caleb[/name_m]
Dosithée
[name_m]Ovila[/name_m]
Napoléon
Émile
[name_m]Clovis[/name_m]
[name_m]Edmond[/name_m]
[name_m]Joachim[/name_m]
[name_m]Lazare[/name_m]
Ovide
[name_m]Henri[/name_m]
Télésphore
[name_m]Paul[/name_m]
Émilien
[name_f]Honor[/name_f]é
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]
[name_f]Edwige[/name_f]
Clément
Elzéar
Gaspard

Which ones do you like/would use? I personally love Colvis, Émilien and Clément. I posted a similar list on the girls’ names thread if you want to check it out!

I love [name_m]Caleb[/name_m], [name_m]Edmond[/name_m], [name_m]Henri[/name_m] (pronounced the [name_m]French[/name_m] way, not like [name_m]Henry[/name_m]), Émilien, [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and Clément

I’ve never heard of several of these before! Some of them are rather interesting - Télésphore??

I actually have a Télésphore on my family tree - my great-grandfather’s brother! It was a pretty popular name, back in the day

I love [name_m]Henri[/name_m], but the H is so harsh when it’s said in English! I live in a bilingual part of [name_f]Canada[/name_f] ([name_m]French[/name_m] and English) so I have to consider that, which ruins many of my [name_m]French[/name_m] names! :stuck_out_tongue:
