I only did the top 100 even though there would be a top 300 because it would be easier to recognize statistics.

Thank you for sharing!!

[name_u]Garance[/name_u] is intriguing-never come across that before - and it’s interesting to see names like [name_f]Apolline[/name_f], [name_f]Salome[/name_f] and [name_f]Noemie[/name_f] scoring so high!!

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t get [name_u]Alba[/name_u]. It’s not a bad name by any means but it’s so harsh and I don’t understand the gigantic rise.

Odd that [name_f]Nora[/name_f] and [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] fell out. They seem to fit in with trends. [name_f]Soline[/name_f] is also pretty.

[name_u]Alba[/name_u], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_u]Alma[/name_u] - looks a bit like a new Starts-with-A-two-syllables-ends-in-A-trend. I must say that I find it quite boring.

I like [name_f]Lana[/name_f].

[name_u]Alba[/name_u] doesn’t surprise me! It feels right on trend for France; it’s easy to pronounce and spell, has international roots, and has the certain chic feel that I can’t really describe. I’m not familiar with [name_u]Garance[/name_u] but apparently it’s a type of flower so it gives me similar vibes to [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Capucine[/name_f].

Not super relevant because none of my students were born in 2021, but I knew kids 10 and under named:
[name_u]Jade[/name_u], [name_u]Louise[/name_u], [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Ambre[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_f]Lina[/name_f], [name_u]Lou[/name_u], [name_f]Julia[/name_f], [name_f]Chloé[/name_f], [name_f]Léna[/name_f], [name_f]Léa[/name_f] (and Léïa), [name_f]Nina[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_u]Léonie[/name_u], [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_f]Eva[/name_f], [name_f]Louna[/name_f], [name_f]Adèle[/name_f], [name_u]Inès[/name_u] (and Ynès), [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Lola[/name_f], [name_f]Lucie[/name_f], [name_f]Romane[/name_f], [name_f]Sofia[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Sara[/name_f], [name_f]Manon[/name_f], [name_f]Elena[/name_f] (and Helena), [name_f]Clara[/name_f] (and Clar’a), [name_f]Yasmine[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Livia[/name_f], [name_f]Zélie[/name_f], [name_f]Maëlys[/name_f], [name_f]Roxane[/name_f], [name_u]Salomé[/name_u], [name_f]Héloïse[/name_f] (and Éloïse), [name_f]Lilou[/name_f] (and Lylou), [name_f]Anaïs[/name_f], [name_f]Diane[/name_f], [name_f]Maëlle[/name_f], and Joséphine

Thanks for posting. Interesting. I wonder how much of the ups and downs is to do with celebrities. Is there a [name_u]French[/name_u] celebrity or celebrity baby named [name_u]Alba[/name_u]? I tried Googling but all the results were about [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] [name_u]Alba[/name_u].

I grew up in [name_u]France[/name_u] and am half-French and it does surprise me, sort of.

I knew that [name_f]Albane[/name_f] was getting sort of trendy but it sounds nicer to me in a [name_u]French[/name_u] accent.

[name_u]Alba[/name_u] pronounced in [name_u]French[/name_u] sounds really harsh to me :frowning: and somehow like là-bas

I actually think [name_u]Alba[/name_u] sounds quite nice in a [name_u]French[/name_u] accent :woman_shrugging:t3:. Maybe it’s just the region I was in but I had several kids with traditionally Spanish and Italian names: Lorenzo/Enzo, [name_f]Nina[/name_f], [name_m]Sergio[/name_m], Giulian, [name_u]Ryo[/name_u] (Rio), [name_m]Alessio[/name_m]. It also feels like a lot of the [name_m]Al[/name_m]- names (I had students named [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Alessa[/name_f], Aliya) and the two-syllable, ends in A names (Léna, [name_f]Lola[/name_f], [name_f]Jenna[/name_f], [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Ayna[/name_f], [name_f]Louna[/name_f], etc).

[name_u]French[/name_u] girls names are always quite fascinating to me because while I love many boys names because of their [name_u]French[/name_u] pronunciation, there aren’t really any girls names that fall into that categories for me other than perhaps [name_f]Apolline[/name_f] or [name_f]Capucine[/name_f], that really don’t work with a non-French pronunciation.
The only name that I’d pick the [name_u]French[/name_u] pronunciation over any other legit one is, surprisingly, [name_f]Flora[/name_f]. There’s something light and airy in that [name_u]French[/name_u] R with the emphasis on the second syllable :sunny:

It just sounds too much like là-bas to me.

[name_u]Alba[/name_u] is used in many cultures. It is the Gaelic word for [name_u]Scotland[/name_u] and I know some Albas from there too.

I can see how it is attractive in [name_u]Scotland[/name_u] to honor your heritage or in Spain because it means “dawn”. But in [name_u]French[/name_u] I personally just don’t like it.

Yes, I never said that I didn’t like Italian or Spanish names in general or that they can’t sound nice in [name_u]French[/name_u], I just dislike [name_u]Alba[/name_u] (in [name_u]French[/name_u], because the B comes out so much) I don’t mind it pronounced in other languages.

I like [name_f]Flora[/name_f] much better in [name_u]French[/name_u] too.

I love so many of these names! I have a soft spot for [name_u]French[/name_u] names, they always seem so chic and feminine. It’s also cool to see how choices like [name_f]Apolline[/name_f] and [name_u]Garance[/name_u], which would be very out there here in the states have so much popularity abroad.

I can see why the similarity to là-bas would be a reason why someone might not want to use it but clearly there are a lot of people in [name_u]France[/name_u] who don’t mind it. I’m not trying to argue with you, there’s no reason why you have to like [name_u]Alba[/name_u], I’m just explaining why it doesn’t surprise me given my experience in classrooms there. And I brought up Spanish and Italian names to show that those sorts of names are well-used in [name_u]France[/name_u].

I actually think the trendiness of [name_f]Albane[/name_f] would help. While I had plenty of students with [name_u]French[/name_u] names, I also had many with more international names, and [name_u]Alba[/name_u] hits all of the familiarity markers that I mentioned, plus feels like a more international version of [name_f]Albane[/name_f].
