French girls names

[name_m]Hi[/name_m], we’re expecting a girl and are really struggling for our choosing our daughter’s name.

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband is [name_u]French[/name_u], and I’m [name_f]English[/name_f], so the priority is on names that work in both languages. We currently live in [name_f]France[/name_f], but it’s like that we’ll be moving to [name_u]London[/name_u] when they’re still young, so the names do need to be known in both places.

We have a son called [name_m]Théodore[/name_m] [name_m]Olivier[/name_m] (Theo/Théo as a nickname), but we’ve been struggling to decide on a girl’s name. Our options are:
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] (nn [name_u]Josie[/name_u] however it’s not massively common in France)
[name_u]Jade[/name_u]
[name_f]Maeva[/name_f] (not sure how known it is in England)

We both really like [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], but I’m sort of worried about the nickname situation, since it’s not too well known, also our son pronounced J as P so I’m pretty sure she’ll end up being called Posie/Posy. I’m not concerned about this (I’m a ballet dancer and [name_f]Posy[/name_f] Fossil was my favourite book character as a kid), but I don’t know how that will be received in a [name_u]French[/name_u] speaking place. Also, with a son called [name_m]Théodore[/name_m], will have a [name_m]Théodore[/name_m] and a [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] like in [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women.

[name_u]Jade[/name_u] seems quite short in comparison to [name_m]Théodore[/name_m], but works with [name_u]Theo[/name_u], whereas the other four all work well.

Our surname is [name_u]French[/name_u], but fairly well known in [name_f]English[/name_f] due to it being in a popular book series. It starts with a B and is three syllables. Middle name would either be [name_f]Marthe[/name_f] or [name_f]Josephine[/name_f].

Basically, I’m just wondering which one people thing works best and sounds good. We’ve got a while so I’m not too worried, just hoping for some input and thoughts!

I think I know the name, it was my favorite movie.

I like [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and I think [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] would also be adorable. Obviously, the other “V” name isn’t available, but how about [name_f]Veronica[/name_f]? I’ve thought about before, since it’s a family name for me, and then met a girl with the name, and she made it look very cool.

I’m guessing Imogene/Imogen is overused in the UK.

Anyway, you have the best last name, so anything you pick will be cool.

[name_f]Edit[/name_f]: [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] is also a good one

[name_f]Elodie[/name_f] [name_f]Marthe[/name_f] is gorgeous and very feminine in my opinion!

If you’re interested in double middles maybe [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] [name_u]Jade[/name_u] [name_f]Marthe[/name_f]?

Josephine Marthe is dreamyyy

[name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] are lovely! They both sound great with your surname as well, if it is what I think it is.

I know you haven’t asked for suggestions but I just wanted to say that I think [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f] would be gorgeous with [name_m]Théodore[/name_m] and with your surname.

I adore Posy as a nn for Josephine. It is a traditional Josephine nickname so there’s really no problem there. I also love Posy Fossil from Ballet Shoes. Since you’re a ballet dancer I feel this is perfect.

I also think Josephine and Theodore is not a problem - in fact a nice pair - as the character in Little Women is always called Laurie and she is always called Jo. And if anyone did make the link, it’s in no way a negative one.

So, Josephine Marthe, ‘Posy’, is my pick, but I also like all your other names except Jade. Jade feels dated and not as interesting to me, and a different style to Theodore. I think Maeva Josephine is great, and would be easy to learn in England even if unfamiliar to people.

Josephine nicknamed Josie or Posy sounds so sweet to me! Posy reminds me of poésie in French, which is a pretty word and a cool name when you think about it, too! Maybe she can go by both Josie (more for the English speakers) and Josephine (more for the French speakers)? :relaxed: Also, two children with Little Women names is the cutest thing ever. I love that tons!!! If my mother had named my sister and I without our father’s help, we’d haveLittle Women names too.

Congratulations!! All these names are beautiful so I can see why it’s so hard to pick. [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] is handsome and I love [name_u]Theo[/name_u] with

[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_f]Marthe[/name_f] (Posey)
[name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Maeva[/name_f] [name_f]Marthe[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f] [name_u]Jade[/name_u]
Ultimately you can’t go wrong ! But [name_f]Maeva[/name_f] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] are my favourites

Any of your choices as a first but with [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] as a middle are lovely, but my favorite is [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f].

I’m swooning over [name_f]Maeva[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] so pretty. These are all stunning so you will get all the opinions but [name_f]Maeva[/name_f] is my favorite!

I love [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f], and [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] from your list. I say go with [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] because Posie/Posy is such a great nickname!

I love [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] (or even Joséphine, to match Théodore) as a brother to [name_m]Théodore[/name_m] and [name_u]Theo[/name_u].

I love [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] for you! [name_f]My[/name_f] choice would be [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] because [name_f]Clara[/name_f] is one of my favorite names. Your list is so beautiful
