I’ve had a hard time settling on a middle name for our girl due in about two and a half weeks (!!) We picked the first name [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] months ago, and have a few good middle name options, but I’m in need of some new ideas. I’m hoping that seeing some new options either solidifies our current top contenders, or sparks an idea for something new.
Part of the problem is I don’t necessarily have a “style” I’m going through, and we don’t have great options for honor names. I’ve liked nature names, [name_m]French[/name_m] names, romantic sounding names, simple one syllable names, I’m all over the map. Currently considering [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f]. Last name starts with a P and is three syllables.
Congratulations!! You must be so excited. The name you picked out is gorgeous! I agree that it is difficult to find a middle name for, but that just makes the hunt more special! Here are a few suggestions:
I’d like to second [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], and add…
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]…[name_m]PIP[/name_m] would make for adorable initials!
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Briar[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Estelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Elora[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_u]Jules[/name_u]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_u]Winter[/name_u]
I disagree wholeheartedly with the previous poster (except about PAP…I agree…that’s not so good). PEP, POP, and PUP are super cute, and [name_m]PIP[/name_m] is completely adorable.
I’m with you! We have been avoiding A names for that very reason but I’ve actially been trying for [name_m]PIP[/name_m]! I like POP too thanks for the suggestions!
Really appreciate the love for [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]! I’ve gotten such mixed reactions to it that have made me really question it! I’m not one to really care so much about what people think, but I don’t want my daughter to hate her name because it sounds weird and I just don’t hear it, ya know?
Thanks for all the suggestions! [name_f]Iris[/name_f] has been on this list as has [name_f]Willa[/name_f]. Lots to think about!
For [name_f]Blythe[/name_f], people just don’t like the double B sound “[name_f]PhoeBE[/name_f] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]”. I’ve heard it doesn’t flow and sounds choppy. I love the meaning though, and for me, the double b’s aren’t really a problem, but it definitely doesn’t flow as easily as a more standard middle name like “[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f]” or something along those lines. I also really like that it’s one syllable because I think the 2-1-3 pattern with our last name is nice. It’s really the only one syllable name that I’ve found that isn’t super “standard” ([name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_u]Rae[/name_u]… all really lovely names that I do like - I just want something a little different)
I like [name_u]Winter[/name_u] too! I like it for the sound more than the meaning. I live in a state where winters are pretty tough, so I hesitate to use it as a name, but I also do think [name_u]Winter[/name_u] is a very beautiful season so I definitely have an open mind about it.
Suggestions to get you to Pip (WONDERFUL nickname for Phoebe):
Phoebe Irene
Phoebe Ines(z)
Phoebe Ingrid (kind of a wildcard, but I quite like the balance of hard and soft sounds between the two names)
Phoebe Iona
Phoebe Isolde
Phoebe Iolanthe (NB lists the pronunciation as yo-lan-thuh)
I think Phoebe Yvaine could be a gorgeous option for you, but I’m not a fan of Pyp.
If you’d prefer a single syllable to get your 2-1-3 balance, I’d suggest Phoebe Joy.
Good luck!!
EDIT: I removed Phoebe Iris - I tried to match the combos with hypothetical three-syllable last name Peterson, just to see how they’d wear, and don’t think Phoebe Iris flows quite as well as the others. I’m surprised to find myself thinking that Phoebe Iolanthe is stunning, actually…
I appreciate this! When we first settled on [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] my initial instinct was an I name so we could get [name_m]PIP[/name_m] and use it as a nickname.
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] was actually my first thought, but we have gone back and forth on it. I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] but feel like it’s a little harsh matched with [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]? Might be worth a second thought. Thanks so much for your wonderful suggestions!
I’ve been having the same
Issue as you with middle names for baby girl due in 2.5 weeks!
My first is [name_f]Lila[/name_f] [name_u]Grey[/name_u]- I saw [name_u]Grey[/name_u] in your signature- thoughts on [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_u]Grey[/name_u]?
I also like:
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_u]Skye[/name_u]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_u]James[/name_u]? ([name_u]James[/name_u] is actually what I’m leaning towards for a middle for our second)
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Jayne[/name_f]? Kind of feel like the y makes it seem fresher than just [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. Or what about [name_u]Jaye[/name_u]?
I know you characterized [name_u]Rae[/name_u] into a typical standard middle name but I love it.
Thank you for your feedback! Sounds like we are due at the same time - hope everything goes well for you!
I do like [name_u]Grey[/name_u], but when I googled the name I found out that [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_u]Grey[/name_u] is the child of the main characters from the books/movies “50 Shades of [name_u]Grey[/name_u]” and I wanted to avoid the association. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if people didn’t think of that, I’d rather that when her name is googled it doesn’t bring that up you know? [name_f]Lila[/name_f] [name_u]Grey[/name_u] is beautiful!
The other names you mentioned are relatively popular in my area, and while they are all really beautiful, I’m just hoping to land on something a little less common.
