Full Name for Midge

Genre of [name_u]Story[/name_u]: [name_f]Fantasy[/name_f], loosely based off of Middle Ages.

Time Period/Location: Based on Middle Ages, [name_f]England[/name_f]. It’s a [name_u]Robin[/name_u] Hood retelling.

Brief Plot: [name_u]Robin[/name_u] Hood retelling. [name_u]Robin[/name_u] is [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], and is a girl. [name_f]Midge[/name_f] (based off of [name_f]Midge[/name_f] sometimes Much, the [name_m]Miller[/name_m]'s [name_m]Son[/name_m]) is the only other girl in the [name_m]Maverick[/name_m] Men, and she, like [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], poses as a boy. She originally poses as a boy as it’s easier to get work. Her mother is dead, and her father ailing and having trouble feeding his seven children. She resorts to stealing when she can’t get work either, but is caught. One of the Men, [name_m]Will[/name_m], rescues her from the cruel thievery punishment (losing a hand), and she joins them.

Character Description: [name_f]Midge[/name_f] is nicknamed so as she’s tiny. She’s fifteen, already the youngest of the group, but she poses as eleven as a boy. All of the others have similar nicknames ([name_u]Rowan[/name_u] becomes Hood, [name_m]Jehan[/name_m] the [name_m]Marquis[/name_m], etc.) based on often minute details of their appearance or personality. She’s stubborn, hot-tempered, and often impulsive. She is very protective of those she cares about, namely, in this case, her siblings, and will do almost anything to keep them safe. She is very short and beanpole skinny, with calloused hands, brown eyes and hair cut roughly, and a smidgen of freckles. Her parents wouldn’t have chosen a name for her specific to her appearance or personality, their style is pretty random.

Who named the character: Her father, a very poor miller who hasn’t the best grasp of linguistics. Her name is probably either short and choppy (look at the siblings’ names) or strangely spelled.

Immediate Family (if relevant): Her dad’s name is [name_m]Orrin[/name_m] though is generally just known as [name_m]Miller[/name_m], her mother isn’t named or important. Siblings are [name_f]Nan[/name_f], [name_f]Essie[/name_f], [name_u]Fifer[/name_u], [name_m]Cian[/name_m], and the baby twins, [name_m]Lyon[/name_m] and [name_f]Lyra[/name_f].

Already Considered (if relevant): [name_u]Emlyn[/name_u], though I can’t decide if that sounds too “upper class” in the story, or even suits her. Maybe the name shouldn’t suit her, as she goes by a nickname. I don’t know.

Here are some other names in the story so you get a sense of the style. I’ll divide it by upper-class characters and lower-class characters, as there is a division ([name_f]Midge[/name_f]'s should be more along the lower class). Last names listed if applicable.

Upper: [name_u]Brennan[/name_u], [name_m]Marius[/name_m], [name_f]Constanza[/name_f], [name_f]Garnet[/name_f], [name_u]Sorrell[/name_u], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] “Hood”, [name_f]Clotilda[/name_f], [name_m]Reinhardt[/name_m]
Lower: [name_m]Tuck[/name_m], Glendale, [name_m]Ean[/name_m], [name_m]Colin[/name_m], [name_m]Jehan[/name_m] Petit “[name_m]Marquis[/name_m]”, [name_m]Will[/name_m] [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f], and the above siblings

Same story, different character:

This character is the uncle of the crown prince, [name_u]Brennan[/name_u]. He’s a nasty fellow, manipulative, and is essentially responsible for governing the country, as [name_u]Brennan[/name_u]'s a (very) irresponsible teenager. Relatives include [name_u]Brennan[/name_u] (nephew), [name_m]Marius[/name_m] (son), [name_f]Clotilda[/name_f] (sister-in-law), [name_m]Reinhardt[/name_m] (brother). Already considered [name_m]Harmon[/name_m], but feels a bit obvious. Does this work? Any other suggestions?

Thanks, Berries.

[name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Marie[/name_f], [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Mariana[/name_f]

[name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Margery[/name_f], [name_u]Marian[/name_u] (which could be good if you are doing a [name_u]Robin[/name_u] Hood story, but you probably already have a [name_u]Marian[/name_u]), [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Maude[/name_f].

[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Avice[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] [name_f]Emma[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabella[/name_f] [name_u]Joan[/name_u] [name_f]Juliana[/name_f] [name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] Rohesia - These were the most common names during the 13th and 14th century in [name_f]England[/name_f].

@alchemicallypurplefairy - thanks for the names, but I’m trying not to use mar- names as a central character is called [name_m]Marius[/name_m].

@nooshi - same. [name_f]Margery[/name_f] catches my interest, but it seems to go along with more of the “upper class” names in my story.

If I didn’t make this part clear, I’m sorry - [name_f]Midge[/name_f] doesn’t have to be a derivative of the full name, it’s a reference to her height (as the others’ nicknames reflect a minute aspect of their physical appearance or demeanor). It just has to fit in with the siblings’ and lower class names.

Yeah, agreed. A lot of the names you have already - whilst good names - don’t work for me for the setting or as a group. The lower class names are ok and they mesh fairly well as a socio-economic group but the upper class names are a jumble of surnames, flowers, stones and names very foreign to England at that time. I know you said it’s fantasy but the best fantasy’s keep a thread of truth for the reader to grip onto. Instead of:

Brennan, Marius, Constanza, Garnet, Sorrell, Rowan, Clotilda and Reinhardt.

I’d suggest just tweaking it to remove some of the more foreign elements:

Brennan, Marcus, Constance, (Hazel, Larch, Gardenia), Sorrell, Rowan, Clotilda and Reynold.

MIDGE

I quite like Emlyn for Midge, though reading it, I’d just imagine a boy as it’s a boy’s name  How about:

Jayne
Jemma
Poppet
Rain
Lowri
Glade
Eleni
Kate
Mouse
Lissa
Stella
Skye
Merel
Elva
Nola
Fallon
Bracken
Nettie
Lori

I tried to stick with short, zippy girl names and threw in some zanier nature/word/surname options to match Lyon, Glendale and Fifer. I think - inexplicably - that Poppet is my favourite. I like saying it after Fifer.

Uncle

Harmon’s not a bad choice, I quite like it. Considering my tweaks, this is what I’d suggest for the uncle:

Barnard
Alric
Kendrick
Sinclair
Errol
Malcolm
Leonard
Cornell
Sterling
Thurston
Merrill
Marcel
Jasper
Forrest
Loren

I think Sterling is my favourite.

[name_f]My[/name_f] name’s [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] and a couple of my friends call me [name_f]Midge[/name_f] because i’m the smallest in my group of friends, and i’m fifteen too!
Best of luck with your story

@renrose - thanks for all the great advice! I’ll definitely consider some of the tweaks. For some, the characters are actually intentionally foreign ([name_f]Constanza[/name_f], for example, is an “upper class” character from a nearby country, an equivalent of Spain). [name_f]Garnet[/name_f] was solely chosen as that particularly family was intended to have names with meanings all somewhat related to the colour red. If there’s another female name with a meaning somewhat related to red you think would fit better, by all means, please give suggestions ([name_f]Scarlet[/name_f] seems like an obvious choice, but perhaps too obvious, and I don’t think it suits the character). As for [name_f]Midge[/name_f], I like your suggestions of [name_f]Lowry[/name_f], Poppet and [name_u]Fallon[/name_u]. I like the suggestion of [name_m]Errol[/name_m] quite a bit for the uncle.
