[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all,
I’m looking for a full name for the nickname [name_f]Kate[/name_f] because when I’m older I want one of my daughters to be called [name_f]Kate[/name_f] or [name_f]Katie[/name_f]. I’m not against using just [name_f]Kate[/name_f] as a full name, but I would like something that’s a little bit creative. I wouldn’t want to name her [name_f]Kaitlin[/name_f] because that is very common, and not [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] because that’s my mum’s name and she hates it (she goes by [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and was called [name_f]Katie[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f] when she was little). I was thinking about [name_f]Katia[/name_f], but I’m not sure-- do you pronounce it [name_f]KATE[/name_f]-ee-uh or kay-TEE-ya?
I pronounce [name_f]Katya[/name_f] and [name_f]Katia[/name_f] as [KAHT-ya], with the first syllable sounding a bit like “cot,” a tiny, barely-there second-syllable jump that sounds a bit like “ee,” and a final syllable that rhymes with “duh.”
I think [name_f]Kate[/name_f] alone is lovely, as is softer [name_f]Cate[/name_f]. I’d suggest [name_f]Katharina[/name_f] or [name_f]Katerina[/name_f] or [name_f]Catarina[/name_f] or [name_f]Caterina[/name_f], all pronounced the same. Another one I like is [name_f]Catriona[/name_f] (shortened to [name_f]Cat[/name_f], [name_f]Cait[/name_f], [name_f]Cate[/name_f], etc.), which is pronounced like [name_f]Katrina[/name_f] or [name_f]Catrina[/name_f], but looks cooler in my opinion. [name_f]Katalin[/name_f] could work, too?
It’s funny how people can look at things so differently! Sometimes I even pronounce names 3 or 4 different ways because I’m not sure how to pronounce them or I just want to toy around with a new sound!
